- The First Sheaf is a folk horror story set in the backwaters of rural England. A new vicar goes to a rural parish that has suffered a terrible drought. The local folk shun him and want nothing of his god. He fears they have other gods of their own. Then a young girl goes missing, and the vicar's son must search out the mystery of the round field and pay a terrible price for the knowledge he gains. Think The Wicker Man meets John Barleycorn. Folk horror before they invented the term 'folk horror'
This is the edited version of the live stream. The audio is better but not perfect. My waffling is cut out.

Thanks for this. I needed a distraction from cleaning. A great reading. I really felt like I was at some pub hearing a bloke telling me an adventure he'd had. I had to go get a beer to accompany the tale.
Wish I’d had some. It was a very real ale story I agree
Great story, great reading! This is one I will have to listen to again.
Please do!
I enjoy stories that have a touch of "the Wickers" about them!
Thanks Tony.
Excellent! Thank you!
This one deserves to be shared 😁
Love some good folk horror!
as always, great narration. All you inflections are spot on.
Great story and narration!
This is a good one. I really like it. The old guy's story is excellent. Remote farm communities......
Good job!
Fantastic, just as chilling, second time around, perfect for the early hours, before a day warning its arrival. Love the visual! As if you are sitting right across the table with a strong cup of brew, telling me about a horrifying event in your life. I must listen to it again. Am quite sure there are more details I have missed. you are a master storyteller, Tony. Thank you.
Thank you again Marti. I think I will get rid of that ticker for next time
That was awesome. Folk horror is my favorite.
That was good, and read with feeling. I hadn't heard this story before, so it was a treat on top of everything.
I love the concept of groups of atavist pagan communities leftover in Britain. Very unnerving, and always makes me think of Christopher Lee as Lord Summer Isle in "The Wicker Man."
They are everywhere. I have to be careful what I say…
Thanks Tony,
I really enjoyed this one.
I did miss your talk at the end though. I always look forward to your thoughts on stories.
Yes, but I think they'd had enough of me at 20 mins
Loved it! Perfect sort of story to listen to as the season starts to slide towards Autumn---thanks Tony.
Because sliding we are.
@@ClassicGhost yeah, it's all pretty much a slippery slope these days!
Delightfully creepy & the perfect time of year for it 🌽🌽🌽🌾🌾🌾🌾🌾🌾🌾
I love folk horror and the stories of H.R. Wakefield have always interested me. I'd love to hear more of his work, you're a great narrator
i have another of his on the pipeline
@@ClassicGhost awesome!!
Thank you dear Tony 🌳🌳📚
Reminds me a little of Harvest Home by Thomas Tryon, but in that case they blinded him, and cut out his tongue.Awesome as usual!!!!1
I just read that book last week, otherwise I'd be upset about the spoiler.
@@marg9131 Sorry; most people have never heard of it. A comment a little further down actually reveals exactly what happens in this story, so I didn't think comparing it to be a little like Harvest Home was a spoiler. After all, since you've read both, you can see that they are really only similar in theme not plot.
So excited ❣️😇❣️
Had to re~listen to this yummy one...I will share this one to the usual places...THX *Tony* 🌽🌾🌾🌾 *Children of the Corn* 🌽🌽🌽 came from the story origin probably
Or this idea certainly
Love watching you read, Mr. Braz!! Even though you're slim, I think of you as braz ;) Nicely done! Oh, could you add closed captions in your future videos? Thx from across the pond.
Now closed captions is something I’ve been thinking of. Would I have to transcribe everything myself do yohh up know?
@@ClassicGhost Braz - look what I found!! Step by step instructions from a fellow Brit - his channel is called VEED STUDIO - ruclips.net/video/aSYWjLkL6To/видео.html. Now, I asked him whether or not you can select closed captions AFTER you've uploaded the video OR do you need to delete the video and start fresh, i.e., clicking up add subtitles (and select the language you want, English). I'm guessing you probably can't add subtitles AFTER you've downloaded the video. Don't you hate that? If that's the case, I wouldn't ask you to upload this story again, UNLESS you could do it easily. So hopefully his video helps. ;)
Oh, check this out - this guy is giving you five free video editing websites! (I'm an Aquarius, otherwise I probably wouldn't be giving you this much information! You won the information lottery!) ruclips.net/video/iB8PK2POssE/видео.html He's American and his youtube channel is his name -- Kevin Stratvert. I hope those guys go step by step 'cause sometimes they miss the most vital step and you're waiting for the answer, although you can probably find it in an article. Thanks for doing the cc's! I appreciate it!!
@@ClassicGhost The guy who has the VEED STUDIO channel got back to me and said you can add cc's after you've made the video.
I had no idea that Essex, being so close to the sea, could have areas plagued by drought.
I lived in Thorpe Bay, Essex , which is very close to Great Wakering, generally considered to be the driest place in England. Now residing in South Florida which might be one of the wettest places in the US during the summer.
It's hard to believe how hard the east of England gets (living in the wet west)
Great story. Great reading. 🥳Happy to report the uploaded version comes in clear even though the live version was scratchy. 🙃
Great. Well I'm doing another live this Friday and I have a plan for the audio so both sound and vision should be ok. I hope.
Nice read sir
What a marvelously creepy story! Perfect for when the days start to draw in, which they are now. Brr! Wonderful reading, thank you! . P. S. Now it sounds to me as if Megs Jenkins in your beginning music is in fact saying “locked drawer,” not “room” which is creepy in itself. A psychologist would have a field day! I have to find out what movie that is from!
It’s from Psychomania
@@ClassicGhost thanks!
@@possumaintdead I watched it after seeing it linked in the comments a month or two back. My 1st thought was 'ok, interesting biker gang fashion.. just a bad _A Clockwork Orange_ exploitation film.. move along, nothing to see here' but I ended up watching the whole thing lol.
I still hear 'locked drawer' even with the visual of him opening the locked door. Honestly, I find a locked drawer more interesting for some reason.. another question for the psychologist :D
@@possumaintdead If you're still interested: ruclips.net/video/DGxQRA30jDY/видео.html
@@jackdare I am still confused! On several points. Is it not Megs Jenkins doing the “locked room/door/drawer” line? Because it sure sounds like her, but I don’t see her listed as being in Psychomania. If it isn’t her, it is certainly her voice double!
And thanks for the link. It looks pretty bad, hopefully so bad it’s good!
Would be wonderful if there is subtitle on
Hi Tony, love Hawkwind, their interpretation of The Machine Stops would be a perfect musical score for a fantastic Montreal Dance Troupe who's name, of course I can't recall. Maybe I can find them on YT. This story is an ex. of folk horror is it? I fell asleep first time! I still get sickened by S. Jackson's The Lottery and The Wickerman, the ending- now that's horrifying... Here again the language leaps of the page ! The movie I mentioned with a voice like your American accent, was Blood Creek. Didn't finish it, sorry too bloody and dumb. The horror genre at the movies is almost dead. Namaste. Z. SINISTER! finished the tale. SINISTER, PAGAN, BUT YOUR PODCAST WAS GREAT!
+anonymous anonymous this is folk horror . Appreciate you appreciating Hawkwind was for to see them
In Manchester on midst but it’s been postponed. Going to London to see them In October. I am sitting on a bookshop with a coffee thinking about buying Starve Acre but realising I have far too many books
Really enjoyed this tale -- I listened to it today and of course there was no trace of the distortion that somewhat marred the livestream a couple days ago. After hearing that first reading, I left a comment, which you were good enough to respond to. Your reply came in my daily feed, but when I clicked on it, it disappeared. You may recall my mention of Walter de la Mare and "Out of the Deep" (not "From the Deep," my mistake.) I'd appreciate it if you could respond again, as there's no trace of comment or response now. Anyway, great reading of Wakefield, well worth a second listen. Thanks!
Yes, I deleted the live stream. I thought I'd done a de la mare. All Hallows is a classic but long-is. When I have more stamina I might do it
😀👍❤
