One of the world's most talented and underrated bass players has opened his own RUclips channel. Still not a bad time to be alive!
In what world is Lee underrated? Anybody who knows anything about the '70s LA session scene know Lee played on EVERYTHING. Maybe you're right. He does deserve more love.
@@brendanmoir100 - It's a favorite saying on RUclips "underrated", you'll find somebody commenting it on just about every music video....
MATEO RINCON NOT underrated. For us old ones, Lee is a legend and will always be. Played on most of the great albums of the last 50 years. Cheers.
@@Stringman1950 I know he's not underrated for people that know about him but that's the thing. The majority of people always talk about bass players like Flea, Paul McCartney, John Entwistle, just to name a few, but then you rarely see people talking about him or other bassists like Abraham Laboriel, John McVie or even Mike Porcaro. That's my point.
@@onazram1 I'm saying that because HE ACTUALLY IS
"I need an assistant".....everybody puts their hand up!
Well, that guy sitting behind isn't exactly helping out much :)
@@TrainDriver186He's A&R the shades give it away. Silence is his best help.
I would love to be his bassistant!
I did!
in 1976 i went to NYC and was lucky enough to get in for SNL. my two buddies had to wait for me to come out, so they went to dinner. there was Leland Sklar eating alone. my friends approached him and he invited them to sit with him for dinner.as the musical entertainment for SNL was James Taylor, at some point Leland excused himself as he had to go play with JT. my friends said he was as nice and friendly as could be. it's always rewarding to meet a big star and find them to be just a normal person.
I need to engineer the most protective mask design for a beard-owner and then send one to Leland. Something that will shield him from every germ imaginable and protect him at all costs because he's a national treasure.
I thought the beard would be protection in itself lol.
I always end up back here to watch Mr. Sklar absolutely kill it! Such generosity.🙏
Best part ever happened in RUclips s history,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Lee Sklar's home videos !!!!!!!!
I was having a deep existential crisis before watching this, now its.. mellowing out. 10/10 cheaper than therapy
Same boat - high anxiety with me, but Lee always bring the blood pressure down and the worries melt away.
Me too. Exactly.
But just as habit forming.
That's the "Doctor My Eyes" bass? That's one of the greatest bass tracks ever recorded! I was 18 years old in 1972 and just learning to play bass and I heard that song and immediately went "WOW who is that bass player?" I soon found out it was Leland Sklar, one of the greatest bass players of all time. So great to be able to watch these videos after a lifetime of being a fan.
It is.
Joe Palooka isn’t it just best . I’m a drummer n just love this guy
@@mikeault7 same here!! Sklar is an absolute legend!
Dude that sent me back to my happy place !
Spectrum is my all time favourite jazz fusion album. The musicianship on that album is amazing. Thank you for making this video, Lee!
My Favorite too...
One of my favorite bass players, since I was a young boy (I'm 63).
Together with Russ Kunkel a perfect rhythm machine.
"I had no idea the tests were now rectal. I thought I was back at the airport." I'm not even a musician, and I love watching these videos!
Song starts at 7:44 What a treat! I keep coming back to this one. Edit: Even better now that I finally got my ad blocking extension! Can't believe I waited so long.
Youre a boss good sir! Take care! Thank you so much for doing this!
Leland you are such a bass master - thank-you thank-you thank-you for laying down this classic.
… cannot get enough of this … thx, simply great
OMG! I almost choked on my Dr. Pepper .... "It was nice. I brought candy & flowers so it went well." PRICELESS!!!!!!!!!!
Wow, what a performance Leland!! Larry and I love you!!!!
Superb Ear Candy! Thanks and greetings from Australia!
Tommy Bolin, man what a huge talent. The song 'Dreamer' is a tour de force of his chops IMHO. Tommy's and Mr. Sklar's amazing talent shaped my Cobham years and I didn't realize that until now. I bow down as I am not worthy.
Really had me going with that rectal thing lol
Good lord. I have no idea how anyone could naysay what you are doing. Out of tune? Not a chance. Keep on keeping on, Leland. You're the best.
Great your revisiting old tunes getting to practice and sharing with the world at the same time *..bravo
Hello Leland, thank you from France for this Passion during all these years which has never left you and enchanted our lives with magnificent Moments of Basses! for all this sharing of knowledge and this very very great kindness! I love from France Leland !!!!! Good Days!!!!!!
I wouldn't be changing those pick-ups out, not with that sound. Infectious track. I can't work properly when I have that playing. My daughter can't enjoy TV either (with the noise I make.) Thanks for taking us through it.
If you ever feel like granting a bucketlist wish , It would be my dream to play drums with you Mr Fabulous Leland Sklar !!!
This track is ace...G7 C7...you're kidding me. One of the first and only bits of great music that I was introduced to and taught by the brilliant Rob Gibney..you are super.
Great playing sir! Thanks for sharing!
Awesome remember to old jazzrock times...Thanks for that.
Regards from Slovakia...👍😍🎸🍷🎼

I saw Mahavishnu Orchestra on 11/72 and it was a pivotal point in my mind. It was like a musical freight train when they pushed the throttle all the way...it was one of those times that I’ll always remember because I was with my friend Dave Shogren.
I love that song!!!!!
Thank you for sharing your memories, it really is a treat hearing your stories! and hearing you play ,thanks.
Thank you very much sir it is a pleasure to watch you play you are a true master and a great Humanitarian staying with buddy outside while he was on acid may have saved his life thank you for all you do
An ultimate lesson in how to create and play in a big pocket! Bravo Lee!
I Love You! Thank You! Thanks for your wonderful work, your music, your bassplaying!
love the bass here...but man..the keyboards on this track are just awesome....
Mr. Sklar: thanks so much for posting these videos. I've only recently discovered this record, and as a guy pushing 60, it's an inspiration to pull my guitars back out of the closet; I kid you not. Great work, and thanks a million for the inspiration.
My favorite bass line of all time! Thank you! You've been in my ears in good times and bad, lifting me higher.
God Bless you Leland!
This tune has been my timeless model for bass playing and now having this performance available by the original artist is a gift that can't be thanked enough. Thank you Lee for all your loving spirit passed through all your work with Billy, James and so many others. You are great!
I agree with with your comment about teachers ,nurses and musicians it is a calling .Thank You for saying all of that ! This is why i offer to play where I attend church but things have changed so much for me this past year with how things are done at church which is a same !
Thank you for sharing your life with us.
Beautiful, thank you for that. Great way to end the week.
Red Baron and Stratus have been staples in my life for almost 50 years. I actually love the version on the Billy Cobham live album with the Brecker brothers and the very underrated John Abercrombie on guitar.
John Abercrombie was one of the greatest jazz guitarists ever. This is the first I've heard someone say he was underrated. He was highly respected in the jazz world.
@@musicdirector3938 oh I know. I should have clarified myself better. I guess his time in the fusion world was short-lived (and self imposed). I know his first love was always jazz and seemed to start getting uncomfortable in the jazz/rock/funk/fusion world. Compared to the likes of John McLaughlin and John Scofield in the fusion scene Abercrombie had a limited output. (That I know of).
@@musicdirector3938
Hey Jim Hall Said of all the younger cats John Abercrombie was his favorite.
Beautiful. Love to watch you play. You can see the experience flowing right into the strings. Thanks for the video.
Love it. Love the jazzy feel to it and how it grooves.
Hi Leland i think we can say that you have entered the status of Bass Legend with this album ! Even today during jam sessions we are still playing Stratus and Red Baron 😊
What a groove. Thanks for introducing me to it. What fun!
Yes it was fun Leland! Thanks!
Feels like Lee is playing way back on the beat. Gives it such a sloooooow groove. Love it.
One of the greatest tracks of all time! Thank you 🙌🙌
Thank you Leland, I needed that talk, you're a good man.
Leland, you still have the hands and fingers of a 20 year old!! Thank You for doing these. It’s such a treat. You’re a legend, and a true “staple”. The magnitude of what you offer in your experience, ability and wisdom will (and rightfully should be) celebrated for generations to come. Cheers!
Very cool my friend. Love love love the ‘62 Jazz!
Really great, Maestro!
Fantastic!!! Thank you!!
Oh Man you are in so much precious records, almost everywhere! Hats off to Lee
That was awesome! I have heard that track at least a thousand times. That was the best! With the bass featured was such a treat! Thanks, Leland! Please keep doing these, especially the Cobham stuff!
Love this song!
That Jazz Bass tho.. makes me feel good. Not to mention the player and the song. All the best to you!
That was just WOW, 👏❤️🙏🏻🎸🎸 love it.
Leland, that was smooth. Your whole vibe with the shout out to the front liners and the hummingbirds, and the bit about chilling in the hammock. So humble, and relaxed. Your wisdom is infectious. Thank you for the good vibes.
Just superb! You make it look effortless.
one of my favorite songs ever!! thanks Leland to share it with us
Lee you have me over here playing drums on my counter going with the beat. That bass sounds fantastic and looks awesome. Thanks for sharing my friend.😎✌👍🇺🇸
I had to listen twice ... great smiles and memories here. Thank you so much for what you do!
YES that's the one! Thank you so much Leland for featuring and discussing the history of your custom carved bass. It fits you well and the sound is pure comfort food for the ears! My car is also a '97! And yes the world is such a beautiful place. Thanks again and Cheers!
I love how you are so into everything you play! So passionate!
used to play this and spectrum over and over...i tried to make my bass sound like th album...great song
Thanks for adding the Spectrum tracks! I can’t tell you how amazing it feels to get to watch you play along with songs that I’ve cherished for so long. You rock man!!
I did not know you had played on the most iconic Cobham tune ever! I loved your playing back in the day before I knew who you were, but as a drummer myself, well, other players pale next to the cob. Time to make ammends. Thanks for showing us this, that was amazing
Elegant play as always Mr Leland, thank you very much for this moment.
When you play these earlier tunes, it must just transport right back to the exact place and time. What a trip! ✌🏼
Really love the look and sound of this bass, thanks again.
You are an inspiration! Thank you for all you have done. Iconic
Amazing, simply, amazing! I haven’t heard that in forever. Thanks for that! I’m really enjoying the vids you’re sharing. Cheers
Thank you! This album changed my life. Watching and hearing your stories is a peak under the sheets. Love it!
I love this tune, the whole album. Thanks for revisiting it, great to get to see you play your part.
Wow! Good job ,Leland sir! You really made this beautiful tune come alive. I can see that the song really transported you back in time, right into the good ol days. This song indeed is in your dna. Amazing video! Thank you.
I knew how I felt watching and listening today, and for me your hummingbirds provided the conceptualization . You are a hummingbird helping to show that there is still beauty in our world. Thank you, Sir!
This album didn’t leave my turntable for months! Thanks for the memories.
Seen you around forever but love the 'intimate' stuff you're doing here as we are all in these 'circumstances'. Was 23 back in 73 and got to go to some of the great concerts where groups and musicians were breaking all this new ground. Still makes the hair stand up on my arm when I think about it...nothing much left on the head. Thanks Leland!
That’s an epic playing, that music the defined a genre, proud i grew up listening to that 👍🏻
I am loving these, Lee. Looking forward daily to what you've picked.
Gosh, how many times have I lsitened to this album / track?!?!! The chemistry between everyone especially during the guitar and then keyboard solo is amazing.
Thanks for doing these. I'm enjoying the music, the history, and especially the compassionate and wise voice of reason.
These really help me keep my sanity! Thanks so much for everything you’ve done and do Lee!! Really love billy Cobham too, you are both very humble and awesome people!
Love this! Thanks again for the music and stories.
Your videos have been so, so helpful during this unfortunate time. I remember the first time I heard Spectrum - found a worn copy of the album at a friend's house.. that was a turning point - mind altering - you and all the musicians on that session - just amazing. Thank you for these videos and the stories.
Look forward to these now. Great stories and free lessons on everything! Not just music. Thank you
Thanks Leland, this is another nice gift, all these homemades. I've been listening to you since the early 70's, and it is so interesting to hear your take on so much music-well,so much music history! Thanks for your example, your service, your sound.
Thank you again Lee - incredible insight into a famous fusion tune - then - more great acknowledgement of the people who truly keep our societies running in the civilised manner we are accustomed to - eg - medical people, teachers, and other public support workers etc. Your message here should be the first thing that the President says when ever he speaks publicly (as if). Greetings from England.
Thank you for that absolutely brilliant playing, now I’m going to look up these guys
Rectal swab...what a joker! So glad you're back!
Back? He never left.
Yay!!! And that BBC show is fabulous. Thank you!
Thank you so much. We’ve enjoyed your music for many decades now. The stories are wonderful. Thanks again. ❤️
Absolutely amazing...this many virtuoso players can actually play together without stepping on each other. Thanks for another gem, Lee !! I love listening to these....
The “Lee Music Lounge” played ist some Jazz today. Thank you Lee for this awesome funk jazzy tune. I always appreciate you as a human being first then a bass player. I love your stories from the road. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻✌🏻
Thanks for another great video Lee!! I look for to seeing these each day! Thanks again!!
So good to hear these old faves again. Had to put on Stratus after this... monster grooves.
