I made a video on desk crits that really tackle the design process.
It takes time to find a flow that works for yourself. But a balance of story telling, precedent research, and design iterations, even if they're not the best, is always the best foundation in the design process. I actually show an example in the Desk Crit video of how to approach design iterations.
