Exploring Loma Vista Cemetery and the Origins of the Electric Guitar (Rickenbacker, Fender)

- Опубликовано: 21 янв 2025
- Come walk with me Loma Vista Memorial Park in Fullerton, CA to visit the graves of Adolph Rickenbacker and Fender Guitar's legendary designer George Fullerton. We will also visit Horatio Hornblower author C.S. Forester as well as Walter and Cordelia Knott, the founders of Knott's Berry Farm. Among the other famous graves we will see are controversial baseball executive Al Campanis, and recording artist Andy Russell. Our walk will also include tragic reminders of the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic. There is much, much more to see and to learn as well.

I purposely saved this episode for the quiet time of my evening, as I find your voice relaxing, and your story telling to have a comforting effect after a busy day. You did not disappoint, and I look forward to my next walk with you. Thank you so very much for this channel.
Comments like yours are what truly keep me going. I'm so glad you found a safe place to come to in Grave Explorations. I have another project nearing completion, stay tuned for updates. Thanks so much!
Beautifully narrated and beautiful cinematography. I love every single video you post. Thank you for your dedication to the craft.
Thanks so much, am very glad you enjoyed! :)
You do such a wonderful job on your videos. I always assumed that the Knotts were buried on the KBF property. I am from So Cal. Next time I go home I need to go to this cemetery.
My grandmother is buried here, it’s so nice to see someone have a love for history. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you for watching!
Mine as well!
What a great walk. I had no idea my Mom and Dad and brother were in such great company. As many times and it’s a lot that I have been there I have never visited the mausoleum. I’m going tomorrow. Thank you. Love your videos.
Excellent work as always, and we thank you....especially for the reminders of another pandemic and how they struggled and how we should be thankful for the era we live in is so much better!
You're very welcome. The brother and sister's story really got to me. The most tragic thing is that it wasn't an uncommon occurrence in 1918. Thank you for watching!
@@graveexplorations It got to my 92 year old husband also as he lost his older sister to the 1918 pandemic~ History has a way of repeating itself...but we only need to learn the lessons foretold in these history lessons....most folks will never learn~
@@sydneyadams4758 I am so sorry. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Great job, as always. The respect you have for all the dead is commendable, but, especially, this Memorial Day it is the stories and sacrifices of my fellow veterans that I appreciate. Thank-you.
Thank you for watching and your very kind words, but most especially, thank you for your service to our country.
My favorite is Rickenbacher and Fender. I grew up in a musical family that loves and appreciates music at its finest.
Both make great guitars, so very distinctive! Thank you for watching.
Matt, you never cease to amaze and impress. Yet another masterful video. Since yesterday was Memorial day, and I a retired Navy Chief, I was moved when first I heard the opening notes of the Navy Hymn (Eternal Father, Strong to Save), and I want to thank you for the respectful attention to paid to our fallen. Your reverence to all the "permanent residents", famous or not, speaks volumes of your character. This video also had another relevance for me. I had a short part-time career as a musician in a rock band, and my desire was always to own a bass guitar from the company of Mr. Adolph Rickenbacher. I never did get one, but years later (circa 2004), I purchased a van from a woman whose son I knew sparingly through ice hockey officiating. This was yet another of my past pursuits, which I retired from in 2013 after 30 years of work. The woman who sold me the van still used her maiden name, Rickenbacker. In discussion with her, I learned she was a grand niece of Eddie Rickenbacker, whom you mentioned, and for me needs no introduction. That van is still in my driveway, and though it hasn't been driven since 2012, I can't quite bring myself to part with it. It is my connection to fame and greatness, I suppose. Side Note: It was interesting to see Adolph's gravestone has the original spelling of his name.
Keep up the fine work, Matt. I will now once again go through the long wait until you release your next film.
Thank you Jim for your very kind words and for sharing your story. Most especially, thank you for your service to our great country. Many years ago I had aspirations of becoming a musician and was huge fan of the Beatles. So one summer I saved every dollar I could scrape together and bought a Rickenbacker 620 guitar. Well, suffice to say, I never became a musician, but I still have the guitar and count in among my treasured belongings. I don't play as much as I used to, but every know and then I take it out of the case and play (poorly) a few chords of "Ticket to Ride" and "Mr. Tambourine Man." As for the next video, it is well along in production, almost nearly complete, so hopefully it won't be too long a wait. Thanks again for being part of my grave explorations. Wishing all the best :)
@@graveexplorations It was my honor to serve, Matt. I know how you feel about not playing much. Over the years I have a acquired a fairly large collection of about a dozen guitars and basses, plus a violin, viola, cello, 2 ukuleles, and yet I almost never seem to find the chance to sit and play. To this day I'm still not what I call a musician, but music brings me pleasure, and I can't worry about being "good at it".
I can tell you that what you do is truly art, you are good at it, and it brings many people pleasure. Don't ever give up on that. God bless.
Thanks for another masterpiece! I especially enjoyed the part where you show the Veteran's photo along side their marker, you honor them greatly. Also the unforgettable poem at the end. I eagerly await our next walk!
Thanks so much. I have another project nearly complete that I will be getting back to work on, stay tuned! :)
I believe this to be my favorite walk so far. Once again you have honored both the memories and history of this community and world, personally and collectively with respect and love. Well done!
I can't thank you enough for your wonderful words. I'm so glad you enjoyed the video :)
Your channel is my favourite of the historical grave tours. Your commentaries are terrific
Thanks for all you do. Be well
I truly appreciate that, thanks so much!
I love you soooo much!!! I love your voice. I love how your work is of high and professional quality!!! I love that you’re teaching all this cool information ❤️ thank you
This is fabulous. Most of my maternal side of the family is here. I've been coming here since a young child with my mother. Everything was interesting to learn. Many years ago you could enter through the east side in the back area but I believe then the homes were built. I guess I'll have good company when my time comes.
Outstanding production and a voice just made for narration. Thank you.
You are too kind, thanks so much! :)
@@graveexplorations your Voice and the production of the videos are so Far above others here on YT.. I feel like the History Channel or military channel or Smithsonian channel are Lacking your expertise and these educational videos ❣❣
I have got to support you in your work. I've watched four of your vids now and it really gets to me. There are so many that have come before us and left us with so much wisdom and knowledge. That's why we're here...to learn. It all comes down to love. We hope for the betterment of mankind so we share our love with all that we can. These people you've highlighted lived their lives for the future, for a better tomorrow.
Your tribute to the veterans choked me up seeing their pictures...thank you!
This video popped up in my suggestions and I’m so glad I clicked it! I really enjoy hearing about the lives of others. Seeing where they are buried - not just the famous but the day-to-day people. You have a new fan today ☺️
Your respectful tour and the time you took in finding out about the people you spoke about is truly inspiring. I'm so glad to have found your newest video. The people of the past should be remembered and you have done them proud. God bless you. A loyal viewer.
Thank you so much! Your kind words mean more than you know.
This is a wonderful video! Your commentary is so peaceful and soothing. That poem always gives me goosebumps. Loved this.
Thanks so much, I'm very glad you enjoyed it.
You did a superb job on this video. I appreciate the homage you paid to the fallen service men and woman.
Thank you for watching and your very kind words :)
Absolutely love the history in your videos, thank you for bringing us with you.
You are very welcome, thank you for joining me in these journeys :)
Please do some more videos I have watched all your videos over so many times just to hear your soothing voice. Your voice is so soothing and calming.
Agree 💯
Thank you for another excellent video Matt. My grandparents from my mother's side are both buried in the side garden from which you read from that plaque at the end of the video. Nice to know they're laid to rest in a place full of so much history.
Thank you for watching, I'm so glad you enjoyed it. Your grandparents rest in a peaceful and beautiful spot that is wonderfully cared for.
Your work is amazing!
Thank you.
Beautiful video
Thanks so much!
Awesome. Great research and pics. Thanks!
You sprinkled the magic liberally here, thank you.
Thanks so much for watching and your very kind words :)
Keeping the spirits and souls alive of those who have passed are what you and Arthur Dark do so very well. I am proud to be a subscriber to both your channels and always look forward to new posts. I am new to your channel GE. But i have not been at all disappointed. Your voice brings heart to these videos. Thank you.
Once again another excellent upload. So glad i became a patreon of this awesome channel
I truly cannot thank you enough for all of your support. Your generosity means more to me than you know. ☺🙏
When I was in high school, I used to love go to the cemetery to read and relax, now I can’t even think about it...
You do a magnificent job with your videos. Thank you so much!
Excellent job as always my friend. I think you covered so much in this episode. Music history, pandemics and freak accidents as well as honoring some veterans. Couldn't been a more perfect time for this video. Thank you for all the work you put in on this one. I enjoyed it a lot!
Thanks so much! Working on this video really helped get me through the dark days. I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Take care and best wishes to you :)
@@graveexplorations I'm glad you could find peace while doing excellent work to share with all of us.
I'm in Northern California , my Grandmother was born here in 1892, she told me living in Roseville Ca, in 1918 you would see people on the street on Monday and read about them in the obituary on Friday , but neither she or my Grandfather got the influenza
👋👋👋 once again another awesome video. The poem is right on the money.
Here's another mystery a grave stone hidden in the hills of Idaho of a little boy, but then another head stone of the same little boy in a Idaho cemetery. So where is he really buried and who was he?
Blessings to you and your family. 🙂🇺🇸
I've come across many so-called mystery graves in different locations. The key is to keep looking, sometimes it can be the simplest lead that uncovers a fascinating story. Thanks so much for watching and your very kind words. :)
Really liked this tour. Something about the history in this one was touching. Got me at Knotts, then the Spanish flu siblings. But it was the life of ordinary non famous that were fascinating for me.
So glad you enjoyed the tour, thank you for watching!
Another masterpiece! There are so many "Valli's." An unpublished biography awaits to be discovered.
Almost as mysterious as the animated character at 14:16.
Haha! You noticed the Blue Meanie from the Beatles "Yellow Submarine" movie. It was a bit of last minute "inspiration" you can say LOL. Thanks so much for watching!
Your voice is so calming. You are a magician with your words.... captivating and insightful. The stories you bring back to life and remembrance you give those that once lived is amazing. Again, I applaud you. Thank you for what you do. Looking forward to walking with you again.
Thank you for take us along to Loma Vista, I shall visit as I live in Huntington Beach. I was looking at the Queen Mary Video and clicked on you mantel to get here. Chris.
I appreciate you checking out the channel and for watching. Loma Vista is a lovely place to explore.
I just discovered your channel, it's so interesting and at the same time relaxing... Thanks 🙏
Your vids are awesome. They are educational and I love how you always put in a few "nobody's". You could even make a short TV series. Awesome!
Thanks so much for watching and your very kind words :)
Very interesting, really enjoyed this, great voice
I made a short documentary on my channel about Qing Ming, the Chinese "Day of the Dead." I took inspiration from you! I love the time and effort that you put into these, and hope to achieve the same level of polish and finesse that you do with history's stories. Thanks for this video!
I just watched your fascinating video and was blown away by how beautiful it was! You have an amazing gift and I applaud you!
@@graveexplorations, I love to visit that Beautiful Gravesite, but I might need to take my Father's Ashes over there, where I can put my Father's Ashes in a very lovely Urn, so that I can always remember my Father all year longer, then ever. *Crying for her Father's Death.*
Wow, beautiful. Thank you.
Glad you like it! Thank you!
Been waiting for a new video. Thank you..
Thanks so much, more are on the way :)
Excellent Vlog....
Very well done, thank you.
You're very welcome. Many thanks!
I watched this again today. You are one of the best .... Thanks
I really enjoyed this tour. I've been fascinated with the stories of the people who've passed since I was a little girl. (Many moons ago) The last poem at the end made me cry. Do you know who wrote it? I would love it to be read when I pass some day.
Thank you so much for watching and your very kind words. As for the poem at the end, I believe it was written by Mary Frye, but I'm not certain.
Grave Explorations Do Not Stand at My Grave and Weep by Mary Frye.
Beautiful work. So much history. Thank you
As usual, a wonderful presentation.
Thank you, so glad you enjoyed it :)
RUclips deleted my comment. I think I found Valli. Her name was Valli Mueller who was born Oct. 15, 1923 and died Jan. 7 1967 in Los Angeles County. According to her obituary lived in Whittier at the time of her death and was married to a Richard Gill Mueller with 2 daughters. Didn't say where she was buried but a funeral was held in La Habra, which is about 4 miles from the cemetery. She may have been born in France and her real name was Valentine Kocheleff Mueller.
Valli was her first name! Oh my goodness, I can't believe I never thought to check that angle. I bow to your prodigious research skills! Thank you so much for sharing. I will have to post an update giving you full credit.
@@graveexplorations You're welcome! I called the cemetery this afternoon and they confirmed burial for Valli Mueller in Loma Vista at West Lawn 2 Lot 835 Grave 5. Her husband died in 1985 but he is not with her. I thought she might be a war bride because she was from Nice France, and that was where she married her husband in 1946. He was in the army at the time over in France. Genealogy skills can sometimes come in handy. I'm into that and Find a Grave. I leave the videos to experts like you and Hollywood Graveyard. I'm always excited when new videos are posted.
@@Randy1743 I am the same. Starting to hone my genealogy skills and a member of Find A Grave, but leave the memorable tours to Grave Explorations and Hollywood Graveyard.
Matt, hope you are well. Missing your Grave Explorations. Here is hoping your travels continue in 2021...
What an amazing video! My grandmother is buried at Loma Vista and it is truly a beautiful place. Another interesting grave site that you didn't mention is the previous ruler of Cambodia before Pol Pot!
Fascinating tales! Thanks much!
Another fantastic video. Thank you!
I love your videos
Cant wait for more..🇵🇭🇵🇭
Thank you for this great video. My Grandparents and Uncle are buried here. Had no idea the historic people who are here.
The Valli headstone lines up with a brilliant jazz pianist, Elmo Hope who died of heart failure from heroin addiction. There may have been some discography with The Fours Season’s, but his life sadly is a tragic narrative as a musician nonetheless. Wild guess, of course.
Superb as always.
This is cool.Tony
So happy ..U made my day 💗
And you just made mine, thanks so much for being here! :)
Perfectly done
Wonderful stories. All greetings from Timor Boy in Bali.
My grandparents would visit California in the 30s from Michigan by driving. My grandfather owned numerous properties and an Allis Chalmers dealership. He sold more combines than any dealer. Somehow they met the Knotts. They kept a correspondence with them for years. Eaglegards...
The Fox Theatre may still stand in Fullerton, but I don't think it's been open since 1987. It was tagged for demolition but has been saved at least. But still harbors structural issues to prevent its rebirth.
Angelo's and Vinci's Italian Restaurant occupies the backstage area. The late owner Steven Peck ran a dance studio on the 2nd floor, long since shuttered after his death 25 years ago.

That is so interesting about Fender
I love Lóma Vísta Cemetery!
It really is a beautiful place.
@@graveexplorations, can it be dangerous along with the COVID-19 Coronavirus, along with a bunch of Mob of Gang-Members, too? :?
Byron Heath is still operating in Fort Wayne Indiana.
That is fascinating, I don't know why that didn't come up in the research! Thank you for sharing :)
@@graveexplorations I was told they are in a new facility as well. Fort Wayne is fairly close to me.
These videos are becoming addictive
You have the perfect documentary voice.
That same poem at the end of this video is inscribed on the grave of actor Charles Bronson.
I did not know that. Thank you for sharing and for watching :)
Your story about Valli reminds me of my sister. Thanks to my brother in law she has a small stone with just Polly, no dates or years just Polly.
First comment............from New Zealand😁
Awesome, thank you! Best wishes to you and everyone in beautiful New Zealand!
Odd coincidence...the actress Alida Valli, who died and was buried in Rome, had a signature "Valli" in a script identical to the mystery grave in Loma Vista. Her Wikipedia entry shows this signature, but does not indicate she may have a memorial stone in California. Perhaps a lover memorialized her...or perhaps an unacknowledged child?
By Mary Elizabeth Frye:
Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there. I did not die.
RIP Sweet Toby 😿
24:49 history repeats itself...
Fender is now making a Grace VanderWaal signature ukulele. Grace is the youngest that they have ever made a signature anything for.
So grave markers have followed the same path as architecture in general. From stunning, high quality masterpieces to the atrocious function first approach in modern architecture.
Just one of many, many ways society has slipped...
