Opie and Anthony - The Rock Controversy (January 6th, 2000)

  • Back when wrestling was at it's peak, The Rock went on the show to discuss the trials and tribulations of performing in tights. But, due to some racist comments made by a sister O&A site, The Rock left abruptly which turned a so-so interview, into 'Radio Gold'.
Sadly, the other parts of this saga (the snob to O&A when they went to the opening of WWF New York and The Rock having the phone the boys in the lobby because they wouldn't let him into the studio to smooth things over) are nowhere to be found. If you do have links, let me know and I will put them up.

I read the Rocks book, the one before he got really famous. And he dealt with a lot of issues he moved around a lot as a kid, neither whites or blacks accepted him fully. So he started getting into trouble, fighting and being an asshole. One cool thing he was a vigilante he started beating up bullys that were picking on other kids. Dude had issues I never knew of before I read the book back in '99.
So honestly, I just think this interview brought back bad memories

Then y wld he agree to do a segment in which dx frames the Hart foundation by trashing the Nation's locker room and writing some racist (nothing serious) stuff on the walls? O&A's issue was that The Rock didn't bother to hear their side of it. The dick who wrote that had nothing to do with show. I was a writer for the wrestling website. I remember when this happened all of us behind the scenes thought it was hilarious and awesome. We were thinking all publicity is good publicity and this was going to make the site even bigger. But Sickboy got so freaked out and embarrassed by it that he came home after the interview and started deleting a bunch of posts and cracking down. The site went really down the tubes and he ended up letting somebody else run it and it eventually just died. It will always be funny to me that The Rock basically destroyed our stupid ass little website. The more famous he gets the weirder it gets to me. lol
But I wanted to clear up some stuff related to some comments I see left here.
O&A had nothing to do with the website. They did not know what was on it. I seriously doubt either one ever actually read it.
Everything Sick says is true. Sick was there as a fan and was super excited about it. He wasn't a racist, he wasn't there to cause problems or anything, this wasn't an inside joke on anybody, this wasn't an ambush. He was absolutely legitimately shocked by all of this.
Sick owned the site but he wasn't managing it like day to day, hour to hour, he had no idea the black/samoan joke was there. All writers had total freedom and autonomy to write and post whatever they wanted, whenever they wanted. Sick was not approving the stuff that got posted. If I remember correctly the joke was posted by a writer with the screen name Drunken Bastard who was a Filipino. (Which made it funnier to us that we were being called racist because of one of the non-white guys on the site.) Almost none of us knew it was up there until this interview happened and then we started searching for it and trying to find out who did it. It was one little line way deep down in the middle of a long post. So it always seemed crazy to me that somebody in the WWF was monitoring the site to that degree to even find that joke. It was also weird because the WWF seemed to like what the site was doing and had started letting one of our writers do columns for the official WWF magazine. This ended that.
We never knew at all what the Jackie and Mark Henry jokes were about. I don't doubt something like that happened. The whole point of the site was marrying wrestling commentary with cringey and offensive humor. But I don't believe we ever actually found them.

I think Rock was justified in walking. Anthony is a known racist and the Sick Boy “jokes” weren’t jokes. They were just racist remarks. What I don’t think people are realizing is that Dwayne didn’t know that Sick Boy was sitting in the studio with him until he asked the question about Tony Atlas. (Edit) On top of that, as soon as Dwayne says “The Rock has a question regarding your website” they all do that “Oh shit” laugh because they all know exactly what he’s mad about

    • @edwardfights4900
      @edwardfights4900 4 года назад +11

Known racist? Meh. He's had plenty of black guests on his show. Anthony said nothing thats any better or worse than most politicians or mainstream media losers (Don Lemon) who openly bitch about white men on regular TV. Also, just because you put the word joke in quotes doesn't make the joke not a joke.
Weird how you yourself can redefine comedy. Not really you just want to restructure everything and play stupid as if you think it's offensive but were watching bra and panties matches in the 2000s on the wwe programing. Or some of Jerry Lawler's openly racist and homophobic comments on the program. I bet you were fine with all of that back then. Some insults degrading women (ones he called Stephanie) even came from the Rock himself. So for the Rock to be all pouty about racial jokes at the height of the attitude era, it is kind of comical. I heard JR whining about this and he was completely off base.

+ATTRAYU - Oh, shut up. 'White people used to making racial jokes' - yeah, because it's _only_ white people that do that, isn't it? And what exactly is 'the price'? Getting the shit kicked out of you? You know some people - of all races - actually have a sense of humor and understand the difference between humor and hatred. Some of us like racial jokes because we find they bring us together rather than push us apart, and some of us realize that the ultimate statement of 'equality' is everyone making fun of each other equally. But hey, some people don't understand that, and that's cool - but to act like you are objectively more 'righteous' people for not understanding that humor and that those of us that do are somehow all evil, racial supremacists simply because you don't understand what racial humor actually _is,_ is ridiculous.
I'm so sick of self-righteous SJW types acting like nobody should be allowed to do something simply because _they_ don't understand it. You see a white person make a racist joke and you see him as doing it from some pedestal of superiority - when in reality it's because he sees himself on such an equal footing with his non-white friends that it would actually be weird _not_ to join in with their racial jokes. When I'm in a room with black and asian people and they're all making racist jokes about each other and laughing at it, I'm supposed to just stand there and nod politely, never laughing at any of their jokes - and heaven forbid making any of my own - because that would be damaging and 'hurtful' to them? Sorry, but that to me sounds like the real statement of 'white supremacy'.
I can understand Dwayne Johnson having an issue with the website host, but to act like the radio hosts are guilty by association is an asshole move. For all he knew they might not have even known about those posts. I think he realized this soon after, which is why he called in several days later to apologize and ended up becoming a regular phone-in guest to the show.

Why not? So he should stay and debate it out with unapologetic racists to make who happy? Also he says the office called and told him. Meaning the wag office.

The "racist" comments he spoke of honestly just sounded like jokes. But that honestly had to be one of the most awkward pieces of radio I have heard. So much cringe.

lmao at racist comments being joke, say racist shit to people and expect them not to be offended lmao, white comedy is never funny its based on saying the most offensive shit you can say to someone and then being a coward hiding behind it was just a joke

@CAVEMAN CRAZED Not mother nature, it has all been planned by a certain tribal group. Look up the Kalergi plan and the Frankfurt school. Oh, and perhaps look up Weimar Republic era Germany and you'll be amazed at the parallels between the society that's been created now and 1920s Germany. Mind, looking at your other anti white moronic comments on this video I'm not sure if you are a reading capable person... 🤔

Opie is nothing, however, and no one's sad about that.
