    Obviously Captain Bob is a Pro, but I was surprised to hear that he drops his pots knowing the floats will be submerged for some period of time. Doesn't that pose a safety hazard to other boats who could run over them and get their props tangled in his line and floats when they are still submerged, perhaps close to the surface, but still not visible? Maybe that's SOP, but it seems unsafe.

      It’s odd, but there’s no other way

      @@my-back-yard Yes, it is odd. I don't see how it can not be a risk to navigation. What if there were 100 boats (or even 50) out all doing the same thing, with 6 pots per boat, and all 600 (or 300) floats submerged and invisible, yet close enough to the surface to foul a motor? Like I said, perhaps it is SOP but . . ..

    It's pretty clear that Capt. Bob has got finding crab absolutely dialed in.
    TYFS Brent, awesome video and catch.

    Great video! Thanks for sharing the details. A couple of questions: How deep were your pots and how did you decide where to place them?

    • @my-back-yard
      @my-back-yard  Год назад

      Thanks! 30-40 feet and experience. Just know that if you put them in the main channel, in the current, you should not keep them in more than six or 12 hours. If you get out of the main channel in slower moving water, you can leave them in longer. And as far as where to put them, experience.

    Man...I'm addicted to watching your vids! I have ALWAYS struggled for crab in the Columbia. I wonder if it's time of year. I usually crab during salmon season late summer.

      @@my-back-yard Yeah. I need to weight more. I've always snuck them out of the main channel under the lighthouse. Do ok but not great.

    Has global warming affected the catch of Dungeness crab in the Columbia river, in your opinion?

    • @my-back-yard
      @my-back-yard  Год назад +1

      No. But in the hood canal, we are on a bout a seven-year crab drought. I don’t know what to attribute it to yet.
