Chuck Rainey is a musician's bass player. The man is a Master of the bass, never stepping into the tonality of the other instruments. He has teamed up with Bernard Purdy on so many major recordings that you almost can't believe that it's possible to assemble such a huge catalog of music! He is a National Treasure! Thank you Chuck! The world is a better place because of you.. Lary

@Tom Cass - Yes Tom, his intellect is perhaps the Secret of his Success.. That ability to view each piece of work from an Abstract perspective is part of what he brings with him every time he comes into the studio, and is part of what allows him to see, and feel, the solid foundation that many other players may not see.. It's the kind of attitude that musicians like Walter Becker and Larry Carlton would pick up on Immediately.. All of these guys are/were at the same level of Musicianship and Shared Respect, as well as being really Great People... Lary

I'd been hearing this man all my life, but I just discovered him as a player. His timing and feel are so beautiful and effortless.
I've been struggling a little with my bass technique and this is just great stuff.

"Some bass players use two fingers; I don't have that facility." - Chuck Rainey explaining his one finger techniques. Bass teachers - eat that!

No flashy bass solos, this guy is one of the very best and he does what a bass player should, lay down the musical groove. His bass work with Steely Dan helped make some of their most iconic tracks. Chuck with Bernard Purdie is musical heaven. Watch the DVD about the making of Aja and how Chuck threw in some slapping hidden from Donald and Walter, hilarious.

11:48 POP SHUFFLE as "Home at last". 38:11 POP BALLAD as "Misty". 49:06 POP FUNK as "Josie". Chuck finally said the most important thing. As much as possible, keep your fingers on the instrument.

Great Chuck and reat Bernad at the drums. What a rythm section! Those 2 guys work so well together that is always a pleasure to ear them even on an instruction video like this. What a pair of musicians. Keyboard player is very good also but I don't know him, but he does the work also.

What a wonderful understanding of music, not just music, but how he ties it into feeling and rythym.
