    The Swanson worked perfectly, the butt sliding off the stump and hitting the ground first. Really slick.

    I like the way you talk through how you're going to fall each tree Bjarne. It's a different scenario to get each tree to fall where you want it to lay, working through all the calculations and possibilities figuring out every angle of the dangle to safely fall every tree has one's mind working overtime.
    A good call to put a Swanson on the butt, wow, those views are magnificent, cheers, for the beaut reel Bjarne.

      Chuckle, that saw is a HUSKY. Generally a great choice for falling and I use a Sthil for bucking. Stay safe and have a great day learning fo fall big wood. I promise you will get a rush every time it is a successful day. Only thing I get now is silence as I am too occupied to hear it land. Having a profesional go through the process with you will extend your lifetime a lot EH !

    Awesome video as usual, I like a more open face cut, be it Humboldt, conventional or some where in-between; with a little high wood on the back cut to push the tree off the stump out here. ( all hardwood ). Please consider a fresh fuel filter on that saw, discovered recently mine sounds like that when they are beginning to plug. Start , idle nice, a bit lean at the end of a long cut. Favorite channel on RUclips right here :) And thank you for sharing your world. Awesome stuff.

      I have had a filter mysteryally plug on me over 35 years and both happened happened with the back cut 1/2 way. Fortunately they were not heavy learner's.

    I had to pause at 8:00 That undercut while hanging out in space, back-cutting.. was impressive to say the least. The wedge fell out in one piece leaving a big happy smile on the tree. I have a 592 with a 42" bar that I bought off of a logger on Bowen Island. I wish I would have got it "Walkerized" when I lived in Nanaimo. Now I live in Alberta and people ask why I have such a ridiculously long bar on my saw. I tell them it's because I'm getting old and don't like having to bend over when I'm cutting wood. PS: I had Erikson fly one of my excavators across an inlet once.

    The Swanson cut seems to be a variation of the “open face” cut that is usually used for high quality hardwoods in the East. As a New England cutter that almost always uses some type of open face cut, I am often surprised at the relatively tiny opening that most western loggers use on their undercut. Always interesting to see how things vary from place to place.

    • @KevinsDisobedience
      @KevinsDisobedience 7 месяцев назад +1

      Same, but have you ever tried it-and by that I mean the humbolt more than a handful of times. Turns out it works just fine, even with our hardwoods. Which made me rethink always wasting so much time cutting such a large wedge. I’ll grant you it’s always better, but often not needed. Imagine what cutting a 45 or more conventional notch 20% bigger on this huge cedars would mean for fuel conception, chain and saw wear, and time. It’s quantifiable, I’m sure, but suffice to say a lot. That said, can cause you some trouble if you need to wedge and it starts to close up, but then that’s when you go bigger.

    Always called that a kicker , to break the hinge and jump the tree out from the stump. A small limb laid in the face does the same on smaller trees.

      @mwb3984 7 месяцев назад +8

      Its a good thought you had, but humans would have to spend a ton of money to stop it from growing back in the first place. The majority of North American forest is regrowth, much naturally regenerated. There are more areas forested than before European settlement, but make no mistake there was forest management being practiced well before that. Read "1491" by Mann. Sustainability is a concept humans came up with. Those wildfires this summer? Part of the process. Pretty much any "pristine" view of coniferous forest you see was cleared off or burned clean at some point. You cannot preserve a forest, it is dynamic, not static. Just has slightly different time frame than our lifespans. Mother Nature was doing this long before a human had any hand in it.
