I started BJJ Wednesday of last week, and man I can tell you I had no idea that you should try to control the body of your opponent when you are the one on the bottom, I thought you should just power yourself out with the bridge, thank you so much for this video!
Demian Maia's humility and mad skills on the mats, besides doing a hard degree in journalism (not as easy as you might think, you actually have to have an idea of how to communicate) are no reason to knock his English skills. I can understand him just fine and any serious BJJ practitioner should give this Professor the respect he deserves.
i wanna be a professional BJJ fighter so bad. this sport has my interest to the fullest. after my class, i come and study videos and research on google. even practice a little more after class ends... i wanna pro trainer but to much money.. ugh i just wanna be badass at this sport, i love it so much! its my passion.
Hi, please write me back when(if) you get this so i can help you with a few good dvds.. i've studied AND watched alot of bjj and orther martial arts through the recent years..! :)
Agreed. Maia is the best BJJ artist at 185 in the UFC. I imagine his fight with Herman will look much like Herman's fight with McDonald, only Maia's submission will be even slicker. Please, oh please, show this fight on the PPV!
amidst all this complaining and arguing, not sure if anyone's noticed but... .....one of the world's most respected BJJ experts just gave us a free lesson from the comfort of our homes! isn't that just awesome?
Awesome, thank you so much for uploading the video. I started BJJ 3 weeks ago at a Gracie Barra school, so I need to work a lot on escapes. It's so nice to see Maia teaching BJJ, too. I've been a big fan of his for awhile. Good luck to him at his new 170lb weight, I see him going very far in the ufc!!!
Good stuff. I'd like to also point out that you can verify what Maia says here about flared elbows being weak by watching power lifters bench pressing. They do NOT press with flared elbows as so many "personal trainers" preach. Their elbows are at about 45 degrees or slightly less because it is a stronger more stable position that brings the lats into the press.
Saulo Ribiero's book JJ Universtity is a great companion to Demians stuff. Both Saulo and Demian have many of the same philosophies concerning defense and escapes using body mechanics as opposed to pushing and opening the elbows.
A big reason that elbow inside is so importent is for shrimping alot of people exspecially new people to jiu-jitsu don't understand how importent shrimping is. When i started i hated it, it was boring but it pays off.
Anyone commenting on Demian's "bad English" it is his second language and actually he speaks better English than most Brazilians in MMA... Anderson Silva hardly speaks any. At least Demian tries and you know what he's saying. Demian is the man. Humble respectful guy with a serious BJJ game and recently we've seen that his striking and takedowns are improving too... true mixed martial artist!
Maia btw has a college degree in Journalism at one of the hardest schools of journalism in brazil. Im brazilian and i know what im saying. so besides speaking english as a 2nd language, i bet he outfights and outsmarts any american that makes fun of his english... vamo demian!!
@GitB1 at 4:27 when he pushes his head to the side and lifts his hips the opponents weight is no longer on him so all you would have to do is keep turning idk why he didnt lol
The first escape is much safer. However, side control is such a dangerous position that escaping from it should be priority. During the second escape, maintaining head control should help avoid giving up your back.
Wouldn't moving his head like Demian demonstrated expose you to an Americana? I'll definitely try this in class tonight. That's the great thing about class...it's a place where you can afford to make mistakes;-)
I do the same, being a lighter guy nothing worse than big heavy guy on top. From mount though its much easier to sweep/escape when opponent is postured up in the mount
@tapout00 dude, i tooootally agree. in fact, compared to some other people (anderson silva, for example), this guy's english is stellar. he gets his thoughts across, and well. funny you mention the posters on this site, who probably don't have a sufficient grasp of their own language to even begin to criticize this guy's english. *sigh* |the kid|
@julianfigielguitar If you have the time and the money, do both. After a while, you`ll be safe both standing up or on the ground. If you wanna be even more complete as a fighter, add judo or wrestling to make sure you can get the fight to the ground if you need to. If you need to pick one: If you want self defense against most day to day situations and the possibility to beat a much stronger guy, take bjj If you may need to fight multiple oponents, I`d go with Muay Thai. Both great arts.
I feel like the second part where he bridges from side control would be risky because if the bridge is stuffed wouldn't you be giving up your back? Any insight would be appreciated
@tapout00 He knows far more than conversational English. But I'm willing to be he speaks Portuguese more on a daily basis. His accent is neat, don't hate on it. He's an amazing grappler.
you've gotta love this guy. so what if he cant throw in all the filler words. that's all they are.. words that fill in. he gets the important ones in there. better than waste his breath.
@DEFYtheTHOUGHTPOLICE Yeah man. I prefer roll to the side for giving my enemy the back. I can easier escape when someone has my buck as from fucking side control.
@tapout00 not to metion, he's taking time out to demonstrate very good brazilian jiu-jitsu techniques for FREE. I pay good money to learn bjj, and he's making a video to help people without charging anything. Yes, people are ignorant.
I always let my opponent go mount on me just because i love mount escapes however, side mount escapes/back mount escapes are a massive pain in the ass.
Hendo has been tapped out several times in his career by muchless gifted submission fighters. I think if hendo got a takedown maia would keep him there and tap him. and hendo can be taken down he doesnt have crazy defence. would be an awesome fight though
well u cant compare maia and silva in jiu jitsu especially if he gets past nate ( who is a bjj black belt and great wrestler). if silva keeps distance there is no doubt maia will be destroyed but he cant let maia grab him because maia is relentless with his takedowns and WILL submit him without a doubt if it goes to the ground
@UGApplehead dude it's easy. hit me up I'm out here in lawrenceville. The key is to know multiple escapes. There's always an opening, and patience is always key.
First I'll just start by saying I've been fighting for 6 years and have a record of 9-1, so who's the 'neewb'. Second, yeah Hendo is an olympic wrestler but guys like GSP have proven you dont need a wrestling background to wrestle well in mma. I think Hendo wouldn't dare to take Maia down and Maia would eventually be able to get him down.
no hendo's only been tapped 3 times by anderson and nogueria brothers. hendo's a better wrestler and all around mma fighter, but maia's elite level of jiu-jitsu just might cancel that out and compensate. look at all his ufc victories, but dan's no pushover either.
obviously not... takedowns are not the main focus of BJJ. A high level wrestler or will usually have much better takedowns as a judoka will have better throws. Nowadays it's common for BJJ guys here in Brazil to cross train with judokas to improve their throws. Wrestling is hard to find here in Brazil, otherwise high level BJJ fighters would seek to improve their takedowns with them as well (at least the smart ones). It's after they hit the ground that BJJ will make the difference.
I have no problem at all understanding his speaking. He gave a very great explanation. Respect !!
Didn't know Demian Maia was this awesome instructor, amazing tips here
Hes a 5th degree black belt?
Losing is "like winning, only completely different." You may very well be the best coach ever.
I started BJJ Wednesday of last week, and man I can tell you I had no idea that you should try to control the body of your opponent when you are the one on the bottom, I thought you should just power yourself out with the bridge, thank you so much for this video!

Store these videos in the National Archives, they are so valuable.

lol did u make it?
Demian Maia is a jiu jitsu scientist
He does an amazing job explaining very clearly in English, more clearly than most 'fluent' speaking people would be able to explain.
Maia is the man,he's helping me alot with my bjj.i saw his last fight and i was just observing his movents, hes great.
Jiu Jitsu is so amazing.. It is simplicity in its most beautiful and effective form!
Agreed. Maia is the best BJJ artist at 185 in the UFC. I imagine his fight with Herman will look much like Herman's fight with McDonald, only Maia's submission will be even slicker. Please, oh please, show this fight on the PPV!
I watched this video a few months ago and it honestly added so much to my game. Awesome video Damian's awesome!
thank you demian maia, the best and most effective techniques
amidst all this complaining and arguing, not sure if anyone's noticed but...

Very clear directions. Thank you very much.
PLEASE please please get these instruction videos to high definition. The teaching here is great.
A big reason that elbow inside is so importent is for shrimping alot of people exspecially new people to jiu-jitsu don't understand how importent shrimping is. When i started i hated it, it was boring but it pays off.

thanks man I checked out 101 submissions it has techniques from alot of different grappling arts I seen some Judo and Sambo stuff there as well!
this is good stuff, u can actually learn from his videos.
Nice clips ! I cant afford BJJ so I do Judo and Sambo But im always checking quality clips and visiting BJJ schools for better ground game !
Maia btw has a college degree in Journalism at one of the hardest schools of journalism in brazil. Im brazilian and i know what im saying. so besides speaking english as a 2nd language, i bet he outfights and outsmarts any american that makes fun of his english...
vamo demian!!
It doesn't matter how good hendos wrestling is, damian is going to pull guard, PERIOD..............
Muchas gracias por el video. La verdad es que es de mucha ayuda! Saludos
that was my exact thoughts, happens to me a fair bit in training
@GitB1 at 4:27 when he pushes his head to the side and lifts his hips the opponents weight is no longer on him so all you would have to do is keep turning idk why he didnt lol
Muito bom !!!!!!
Excelente dica para saur desse sufoc!

demian maia = legend
In This DVDESE? lmao i love damian maia.
i was agreeing with ur idea lolz
he wud have some trouble submitting him but he can surely catch him
thats the one, thanks!
Have you even watched Maia? He has some unreal takedowns.
@inkprints946
the techniques will work in either mma or bjj.
Hey good vid and definitely gave me something to thing about. But wouldn't reaching up for the head like that make you susceptible to a kimura?
Wouldn't moving his head like Demian demonstrated expose you to an Americana? I'll definitely try this in class tonight. That's the great thing about class...it's a place where you can afford to make mistakes;-)
He never showed an escape at all during that video?
agreed, when someone mounts its much easier to do a hip escape into the half guard.
@clearlynotstefan thats why its probably free, the rest u have to buy the dvd I would think
I do the same, being a lighter guy nothing worse than big heavy guy on top. From mount though its much easier to sweep/escape when opponent is postured up in the mount
I find a high mount, and back mount harder. Probably the hardest for me is north-south escape.
Gostaria de obter essa obra com legendas em português. Obrigado
I would get this work with Portuguese subtitles. Thank you
@GitB1 That's what i kept waiting to actually see, I never actually saw the escape.
@GitB1 its just a clip from the dvd
That was just great...except were all still in side control Mr Maia...
plus, this video is showing how to frame to bridge your body, you don't bench someone off you.
Does anyone have this dvd and part 2 please help me out I want to learn
@tapout00 dude, i tooootally agree. in fact, compared to some other people (anderson silva, for example), this guy's english is stellar. he gets his thoughts across, and well.
funny you mention the posters on this site, who probably don't have a sufficient grasp of their own language to even begin to criticize this guy's english.

Amen brother!
I'm a guy, I'm 100% straight, but thats a ncie accent :)
Also theres no bullshit in his talk - all simple and practical explanation
@tapout00 He knows far more than conversational English. But I'm willing to be he speaks Portuguese more on a daily basis. His accent is neat, don't hate on it. He's an amazing grappler.
what do you do after you bridge?
lol i can pin somebody in side control forever and try about 10 go to combinations. side mount is prob one of my fav spots
Where is part 2 of this video?
you've gotta love this guy. so what if he cant throw in all the filler words. that's all they are.. words that fill in. he gets the important ones in there. better than waste his breath.
that's exactly what i was going to write. good to know some people know what they are talking about. lol silva being weak on the ground lololol
haha I love his side kick :)
@DEFYtheTHOUGHTPOLICE in scarf hold its basically hopeless plus u feel u are getting choked
Hey a Tony, pass a me the pepperoni........just kidding. Great video
@DEFYtheTHOUGHTPOLICE Yeah man. I prefer roll to the side for giving my enemy the back. I can easier escape when someone has my buck as from fucking side control.
true that brother
BJJ legend.
@tapout00 not to metion, he's taking time out to demonstrate very good brazilian jiu-jitsu techniques for FREE. I pay good money to learn bjj, and he's making a video to help people without charging anything. Yes, people are ignorant.
why does this guy rely so much on striking if he is so good at submissions lol!?
I always let my opponent go mount on me just because i love mount escapes however, side mount escapes/back mount escapes are a massive pain in the ass.
DVD-deez nuts
demian maia with silence Bob...
Isn't Maia from Brasa?
When rolling in class,I get so frastraited trying escape the side,I just let the oponent get the mount..It's much easyer escaping the mount for me...
@Mercer667 more of a reason to train in that position
Hendo has been tapped out several times in his career by muchless gifted submission fighters. I think if hendo got a takedown maia would keep him there and tap him. and hendo can be taken down he doesnt have crazy defence. would be an awesome fight though
Don't be so sure, Anderson Silva is a black belt under the Nogueira brothers.
the only position i have trouble is my own guard and my side control.
demian looks ok, but man he is a BEAST in a fight
i wanna see maia fight silva. i think hes the only middleweight with a chance to beat silva
well u cant compare maia and silva in jiu jitsu especially if he gets past nate ( who is a bjj black belt and great wrestler). if silva keeps distance there is no doubt maia will be destroyed but he cant let maia grab him because maia is relentless with his takedowns and WILL submit him without a doubt if it goes to the ground
i hate being in side control. Its probably the hardest position to escape in BJJ.
no, your technique. I would never figure that I needed to go to the gym to improve my jiu jitsu.
BUT, if you bring your arm near to his head the other guy can take you hand and submission.
didnt hendo get subbed by Silva..
@UGApplehead
dude it's easy. hit me up I'm out here in lawrenceville. The key is to know multiple escapes. There's always an opening, and patience is always key.
Hey invented a new word. "LIMITATE"
I'm using it.
@crx122 he wouldnt do that because you make fun of him hes a nicer guy he would just laugh at u
his english is better than mine and its my first language lol
First I'll just start by saying I've been fighting for 6 years and have a record of 9-1, so who's the 'neewb'. Second, yeah Hendo is an olympic wrestler but guys like GSP have proven you dont need a wrestling background to wrestle well in mma. I think Hendo wouldn't dare to take Maia down and Maia would eventually be able to get him down.
demian maia- the silva killer
no hendo's only been tapped 3 times by anderson and nogueria brothers. hendo's a better wrestler and all around mma fighter, but maia's elite level of jiu-jitsu just might cancel that out and compensate. look at all his ufc victories, but dan's no pushover either.
@tapout00 Honestly I think it sounds cooler this way anyway. :P
@UGApplehead agreed....i can't stand side control.....because it leads to knee on belly.....ughhhh
@DEFYtheTHOUGHTPOLICE not if im on the mount lol
@tapout00 tooooooooootttttttttaaaaalllllyyyy agree with ypu
ahh me 2 brother gotta start benching more
obviously not... takedowns are not the main focus of BJJ. A high level wrestler or will usually have much better takedowns as a judoka will have better throws.
