    Rats, often underestimated and misunderstood, are incredibly intelligent, social, and affectionate creatures. Despite their reputation, rats are actually clean animals that groom themselves regularly. They are highly trainable and can learn tricks, respond to their names, and even use a litter box. Rats also possess a curious and playful nature, making them entertaining companions. These small rodents have a strong sense of companionship and thrive in pairs or small groups, enjoying human interaction as well. With their gentle and friendly demeanor, rats make excellent pets for both children and adults alike.

    Three more things to keep in mind:
    1. Rats have short lifespans, usually about 2 years or a bit more. They are prone to tumors near the end of their lives. You can factor in vet bills, and the losses will be heartbreaking. But they are indeed great pets, and once in a while you will encounter a particularly special companion you will especially cherish and never forget.
    2. Be very careful to avoid mixing sexes unless you want huge numbers of pups.
    3. Rats must constantly gnaw on things to keep their ever-growing teeth under control. They will not bite YOU, but charging cables, electrical wires, furniture, paper, textiles or anything else they can get to is fair game. If you let them roam, you must rat-proof the area and/or supervise.

    Major downside to a pet rat is they live a much shorter life. Cats & dogs you can expect to have around for at least a decade, rats on the other hand is like 2 years.

  • @JLynn680

    Rats make amazing pets. I’ve had several through the years. Worst thing about them is they only live around 2 years. Females are susceptible to cancer. It would always break my heart that they’d leave us so soon. But they’re intelligent, so much fun, friendly, and will follow you around like puppies. And yes, they are sociable, so are always happiest with at least 1 rat buddy, but will still love their human companions.

      @@shapeshiftingmedallion3974Eh, he's not 100% right. They have shorter lives mostly because of their nature as being prey animals. They're honestly the best pets, but in the wild, they live even shorter, usually less than a year. The issue is that predation has made natural selection unable to weed out genetic conditions, like: mycoplasma, hind leg degeneration, rampant amounts of cancer and tumors, bad vision, diabetes, kidney and heart disease, teeth malocclusion, and powerful allergies.

    they’re actually omnivores, and while fruits, veggies, and pellets can cut it, they actually love cooked eggs! they can have a little bit of cheese too, it’s like cake to them in that it’s super tasty but too much will make them sick.
    and sometimes my rats tried to nibble on me while “grooming” my fingers, but only ever really bit me if i was wearing gloves to clean their cage as they didn’t know my hands were under there.
    They also make this grinding noise with their teeth called bruxing that means they’re happy! if they’re super happy and bruxing really hard, their eyes will boggle out, which can look a little concerning but doesn’t hurt them at all.

      In simple, regular terms/language:. "after I read the comments, I learned that the most important thing to consider, when keeping a rat/rats is the fact that they thrive in groups of 2 or more.
      It's very important that rats are never kept alone.
      Whenever possible, please keep rats in groups of 2 or more.

    I’ve had pets my whole life up until now, being 37. They’re all in my heart, but he is the best pet I’ve ever had for multiple reasons
    Fearless. Even when i vacuumed and had people over. VERY sociable. Even hung out with me when I would watch tv. Even had a little wine with me. Very calm cool and collective. And attacked a snake, which is how I found him in my friends snake cage. Made a deal with my friend to keep him if he’s alive before I leave, hence the name “Hercules”

    I've had many rats, and i see a lot of people being sad about how short they live. After crying many times because of their death, i simply started being fine with it, not because i don't care but because now i think that living 2~4 years is actually fine to them and even if it is too little, it's awesome that i can make their short lives so happy and out of worries.

    • @Aethelhadas
      @Aethelhadas 11 месяцев назад +34

      Unrelated but I am struggling with human deaths and this makes me remember someone telling me
      "Getting to exist is an exceedingly rare opportunity considering the scale of universe that is quite possibly lifeless, which then reminds me that we’re not even really “supposed to” be here in the first place. So when I think of death I realize that it’s actually the default way of things for us as life forms, to not exist. Life is so incredibly rare and I think of life as kind of a blooper in the universe. Realizing this feels like an existential crisis at first, but then over time it’s actually comforting emotionally. Because it’s easier to accept the deaths of others when you think of how little a chance we had to be born in the first place. This mindset makes it much easier to handle the loss of loved ones, it’s just the way of the universe. Nothing more, nothing less"
      I feel that yours and this person's mindset, really gives me some peace about my biggest fear, which is losing a loved one(pet included). 2 years is a gift for the rat and a gift for the world to have that precious rat!

They were like little puppies! my mother fell so deeply in love with them. Unfortunately after a couple years one got sick. My mom paid for her to have mammary tumors removed 2x and eventually they just came back and we had to let her pass.. soon after her death her companion passed away from heart break and she also suffered from the mammary tumors as well. I guess they are a common problem with them. Their names were Peanut and Buttercup... rest in peace little angels 🐁 🐭 ❤

I don't know how much I need to emphasise this but GET 2 RATS MINIMUM!
    I love rats but unfortunately I can't bring myself to own one because of their short lifespans... I'd much rather have a long term companion which is why I own reptiles.

    This is really important that I never see mentioned, NEVER KEEP YOUR RATS IN A CAGE WITH A WIRE MESH FLOOR FOR THEM TO WALK ON. This will lead to them contracting BUMBLE FOOT, and it's extremely painful and debilitating as well as incurable. I was sold rats from a pet store and the cage they recommend had a wire floor. A year or so later both my rats suddenly started hobbling around and could no longer run or jump. I found out what it was and was outraged that the pet store sold me this and doomed my rats to a life of pain. There was nothing I could do to help them besides try and make the rest of their life's as comfortable and pain free as I could. One of them died prematurely and then the other died of a broken heart I'm sure. I am still upset about this all these years later. Please inform any rat owners you know if they have their rats in any cage where primarily they have to walk on wire so they can get a new cage before it's too late.

I've noticed that they've not been eating the dry mix, so today I put in the dry mix first so they have some time to just eat that, and then I'd add the peas later. Frankie just ate the dry mix with no issues, but my other rat, Ducky (he's a lil bit of a porker but I'm making some progress on his weight loss because he's old and old+fat isn't a great combo for rats) was another story. His fat ass was sticking his head in the bowl curling up into a ball and pretending to eat the dry mix. Afterwards he'd pop up and look at me like "om nom nom nom all gone, mommy. It is better to raise two or more rats, and if you raise only one rat, there is an annoying condition that you have to spend a lot of time on rats, but still, it is not a “sin that should never be committed.” I only raised one rat, and I still get angry when I think about how idiots who only focus on “the text” without considering “the intent of the text in the manual” criticized me as if I were an animal abuser. I'd even go as far as say that 3 is the minimum, which means more space, more maintenance, and more commitment. However, I also tend to argue that dogs need to be kept in social pairs. If they're "social animal" or considered a "pack animal", there should be 2 (preferably more) of the same species in one group (or for dogs, same breeds)

    • @amberkerr2333
      @amberkerr2333 6 месяцев назад

      Three years is actually a very long life for a rat, so in that sense, you were lucky. :-( Yes, tumors in old age are common and that's why it's so important to have a vet fund set aside when you are a rat owner. They are small pets, but they can require expensive care. It's unfortunately pretty common to have to consider euthanasia toward the end because of all the health problems they can have. It's so hard to watch our beloved little friends suffer.

  • @shae1229
    @shae1229 11 месяцев назад +77

    They are wonderful animals and I feel so lucky to have had pet rats, however it's also important to keep in mind that they are a lot more work than you'd expect and they can be extremely expensive. It was also brutal losing them so close together. Losing 3 elderly dogs over 3 years was bad, but losing 3 elderly rats in 2 months was even worse. 😢

    • @amberkerr2333
      @amberkerr2333 6 месяцев назад

      Totally agree. My three beloved rats had vet bills that were comparable to cats or dogs. If anything, taking a rat to the vet may be more expensive because they require an 'exotics' vet for proper care. But the alternative - not seeking care when they are sick or hurt - is unacceptable in my opinion. The decision to get pet rats should go along with finding a vet and setting aside funds for medical care.

    you should never get only one rat, no matter how much attention to give to it. They need another rat, a companion that’s on their level, to be with all the time. It’s like if a human could only be around a dog and never another person. Of course there are exceptions for some especially aggressive rats, but you shouldn’t find out about that till puberty.
    And rats are not easy to care for. They are incredible, intelligent, and sweet pets- but they are also an incredible commitment. Do not underestimate how much work time and money goes into caring for rats, trust me.

  • @KlutzyNinjaKitty
    @KlutzyNinjaKitty 10 месяцев назад +10

    Something that’s important yet not mentioned: Rats have VERY SHORT lifespans. Even when kept in captivity as pets. Typically they only live ~2-4 years with the oldest recorded rat only living up to 7 years old. They’re like the anti-parrot in this regard.
    If that’s going to be a problem for you, then you really shouldn’t get rats.

    Lots of negative comments on lifespan. We had a wonderful kitten, she only lasted 2 wks due to a (unkown to us) fatal infection from the shelter. She was SO special and loved SO much. It still breaks my heart when I think about her. But, we gave her the two best weeks of her life, and I'd do it again in a heartbeat.
    Better to give these rats two years of love than for them to end up with a minute or two in a snake enclusure. I have no problem with snakes, they do what they do. But, since having rat pets, I've grown to despise snake owners.

    Rats cannot live alone. You always need to have at least 2 even if you are able to snuggle with them every second of the day. No matter how much you love them, you cannot provide the same affection as another rat.
    They are some of the few other animals that have been studied to experience joy and depression, just like us. There are current, ongoing studies that are discovering a rat language that may have grammatical syntax.
    I absolutely love my little mischief, but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do more research beyond watching this video. They are some of the most emotional pets I’ve ever owned, and I have both cats and dogs.
