Hi Ian, I never get tired of your videos. I've always understood the reason for leaving side shoots on a young tree that is to become a standard, is to simply feed the trunk. It definitely works. As a kid growing my first trees for bonsai I'd snip all the side shoots off until the hight was reached where I wanted the tree to bush out. I'd have to stake them or they'd break in a slightest breeze and would take years to thicken up. Diolch yn fawr.
This is a great video, please do some more, I'm grafting a cider orchard and the info really helps.
