If you travel with an open heart and open mind you are better off .. the people need to be more open especially the so called westerners who actually think they come from first world countries .. .

Seems to be a very special card. Complaints about supermarkets and 'spicy food' in countries like Sri Lanka/ India where bland food is totally unknown, seems also ' very special'. If you intend to go to places like Dambulla, Sigiriya (so awesome, walk up to this mountain with a pool on top) Kandy, Polonnaruwa ( highly recommended), better take a taxi/ book a Sri Lanka tour. This tuk tuk renting may be funny but could be rather exhausting for longer time/ longer distances. And yes, it's for sure advisable to bring your toiletries to Asian countries since - if available - they are mostly much more expensive than in your home country. Esp. when traveling with these huge suitcases mentioned in the advert, you have enough space for toiletries 😉. Great that you folks could enjoy the wonderful nature and the beautiful people of Sri Lanka❤

Hey, This is a traveler from NZ and this is what I can tell about the points/complaints they made.
    1) ATMs - Used an international ATM card from NZ and never had any issue. Almost all the ATMs in SL accept Visa/Master, Cirrus..etc.
    2) Food - Of course, they use spices in almost everything. It would have been pretty boring if they only use salt & pepper.
    3) Renting a tuk tuk - Can't comment on this one as we hired a car.
    4) Hospitality - It's undoubtedly one of the finest. You can never complain on that and like many other third world countries SL also has scammers who try to rip off the foreigners.
    5) Groceries - Well, you are in South Asia. Don't expect the comfort or luxury you had back in your country. They have number of super market chains and you can buy pretty much everything (necessities) under one roof.
    6) WiFi -I can agree. WIfi is terrible.
    7) Hot water - Come on. You are in the heart of the tropics and you need hot water.? :D
    8) Wild life - Try not to trigger them. Follow the guidelines given by authorities and the locals. Simple as that. Anyway, Tuk tuk is not the safest vehicle to save your life against an elephant.
    9) Police - Tourists rarely have issues with cops.
    10) Uber - Didn't used them during the time in SL. But I recommend to stick with Uber or any other app based taxi service providers so that it will reduce the chances of getting ripped off by the tuk tuk drivers.
    11) Crime & safety - SL has it's own problems. But it's sometimes safer than major cities from the developed world.

Mandy, I’m Sri Lankan-Canadian myself. SL does miss the 1st world comforts such as having the ability to get in the car and go to a Shoppers (Drug Mart) or Sephora to pick up all of your toiletries and some - or meats and cheese at a grocery store. SL is not there yet and maybe they may get to that place one day. I’m not sure if I’d want them to be that way though. I wouldn’t want my place of birth to lose its soul. Its soul is its beauty. The sense of happiness I feel when I’m there I don’t always experience in Toronto. I do wish country to do better economically so its people don’t suffer - they have for too long. One can be happy with less. You don’t have to have everything the 1st world has to be happy. Less is more!
    Good luck in your travels.

@@LionKing-md5km I have - my last visit was in 2017. I know what she means though, thus my philosophical response. People in Canada and US are spoilt by the abundant choices available to them. For instance, if I want grass fed prime rib steak, I walk into a grocery store 10 mins down the road 11 at night, boom there it is. If Mandy wants high end eyeliner from Sephora, she walks into any major mall, whoop there it is. These are 1st world choices. To be frank, If one has those kind of expectations when visiting emerging countries, they shouldn’t be travelling at all. I know Sri Lankans who will never think of relocating permanently for these same reasons.

Hi, many of your comments are incorrect. Let me correct them so viewers understand what to expect and that you don't discourage people from visiting this beautiful Island. Btw, Im from Pakistan, and I can honestly say, Sri Lanka is one of the best and most memorable trips I ever had in my life. Yes it will be different than other WESTERN countries, so its important not to have the same expectsions, you are not visiting USA and highly vain countries so you will not find a SEPHORA:
1 - FOOD: Food is not all spicy like the lady said. This is completely incorrect. And the food is absolutely delicious and even if you don't have spice there is PLENTY of flavour (you misrepresented that here), you have try different places to get a sense of the food. rice/curry, kottu Rotis, Pittu, String hoppers, Vaddde, crab, tea etc etc, (there is so many to try I cant even scratch the surface here). I think these foreigners tried one place and is basing their whole experience on it....
2 - RENTING A TUKTUK. Honestly, there is no point doing this. Im not even sure why you would bother?

I was born in Srilanka but I have been living in Australia for the past 40 years and I’m an Australian Citizen. I have travelled to almost every country in the world and have been to UK USA and Canada about ten times and I have never used an ATM. If you carry enough US Dollars or Australian Dollars or British Pounds you can change the money to a local currency anywhere in the world including SriLanka or have a credit card handy and most hotels accept them. Hire a car if you want to see the country not Tuk Turks and research and think before you leave then you will have no problems. Srilanka most people speak and understand English unlike in some countries. Do not be negative but appreciate and enjoy the country. Only thing is if you want to go to a toilet in the Colombo Fort Railway Station be sure to ewear a gas mask or an Oxygen Mask. Ha ha if you want to be critical about a country better to stay in your own country and Whinge Whinge Whinge ! I have travelled to Srilanka from Australia about 15 times during the past years and never had a problem and I never use a Tuk Tuk but hire a car.

Thanks for visiting Sri Lanka guys. Loved your video.
ATMs normally accept all cards. Better to check out the ATMs near the bank itself. Not sure really what happened there btw. Sometimes the card issuer bank gateways put blocks taking money out. Nothing to do with ATMs.
Guys Cargills is not the only food city option here. You have Keells, SPAR, Glomark, Laughfs supermarkets spread all across. Also there are many mini supermarkets.
Most of the SL folks are not vegetarians guys. You can find enough and more meat in any of the supermarkets.
Cafe Wifi, yeah agree it's sometimes good and sometimes bad. Depends on the place. There are very cheap internet connections from Dialog and Mobitel if you are here to work.
Wild elephants are wild guys. Wherever they meet you. Dont expect them to shake hands with you.

It can also help you become more open-minded, tolerant, and accepting of different ways of life, and you will return home practically a new person! A tuktuk is worse, as you have metal all around you, not designed with safety in mind whatsoever and almost no protection from anything, so if you get in a collision with a bus or something significant you probably won't survive. Drivers are totally nuts and go in the opposite lanes all the time. So, limiting usage to low-traffic, lower-risk, lower-speed areas is what I'd suggest, if you place value on your life. There's a good train system and everything is cheap, including taxis, so its actually already easy to get around. I think everyone who rents and doesn't have an accident recommends it, but I doubt those who have had accidents or have been killed recommend it.

In Sri Lanka most of the electricity is made by hydro power, during the dry season reservoirs go dry forcing power cuts.

Thanks for your generous words. 🙏
As a Sri Lankan I watched all of your Sri Lankan series and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's one of the best.
Oh Mandy! We Sri Lankans love Canada too.. we once knocked you people out for the lowest one day cricket total 🤣
Nowadays people had forgotten that 🇨🇦 & 🇱🇰 enjoyed a close relationship several decades ago and Canada was so generous towards us that Canada gifted us several train engines in 1950s, which were named after Canadian provinces and Cities to honour them, like Alberta, British Columbia, Quebec, Saskatchewan, Montreal etc... and most of them are still running like demons. One of them had pulled the train that hit by the boxing day tsunami.
So, we love 🇨🇦 more than you think ❤
    Come back again to 🇱🇰
Best wishes for your future ❤❤

Do you think the ATM issue happened because of foreign currency exchange? After the economic crisis, there were heightened restrictions on foreign currency transactions so dunno if that is what created issues. If I'm not mistaken, they restricted the amount per transaction as well. Otherwise, usually any ATM within a Cirrus network bank work quite OK. Usually, within more urban cities there's no issue but sometimes in cities outside Colombo, it's a little difficult. Sorry you had to deal with that.

Oh wow, the backlash in the comments are brutal. Having watched a few vlogs of LloydandMandy in Sri Lanka, I don't think they meant to be negative about their experience in Sri Lanka. It's just their casual observations and subdued style of speaking combined with a negative clickbait caption to this video that seems to have put off most first timers watching these two.

From the caption of the the Vlog and till the end its a list of complaints. Blackouts, yes. Its possible. But having a generator and no power for 20min, unbelievable. Sri Lanka is a tropical country, hot and humid. Cold shower is the best option and the water is not cold as in Canada. ATM issue, first time I have seen this kinda comment travelling all over the city to get cash from an ATM. Wonder which card you guys are using??? Negative comments are always welcome if they are really valid. But with a negative mindset, it is a different story. Anyway, thank you for visiting Sri Lanka and glad you felt the friendlyness and the hospitality of the people which you will not get in another country even you pay a higher price!

Canadian lady had it right about Sri Lankans. Yeah Sri Lankans are big Cricket fans like their Indian counterparts up north and Australia's prowess in the sport over so long has endeared them to many Sri Lankans going back decades. Also a lot of Sri Lankans have settled in Australia and are happy there. Which is another reason they like Australians. Also Australians as far as Sri lankans are concerned don't have any historical baggage like if you were English for example or Dutch or Portuguese that have a colonial history or intrigues with India regarding Sri Lanka. Canadians are not as well known because they don't have a world beating cricket team and they are very far away compared to Australia. So more Australians visit Sri Lanka than Canadians and Americans. as tourists going back 50 years. They have been one of the biggest group of tourists over a very long time so they are well known and visible. So Australians because its closer have a visible presence. Yeah Sri Lankans do like Australians more because they see Australia and Australia as a country thats been good Sri Lanka compared with other countries. Might not be always true but that is the perception among Sri Lankans.

Not sure where you went for toiletries, the wayside shops are like some dollar stores or shops in up North in very small towns I just came back from SL. There are enough toiletries. Cargill's Food city and Keels are everywhere and also Aprico. Every town has them not in villages. You don't have to carry them from wherever you are travelling from Also I changed some money at one of airport Banks first if the ATM is not working go into a bank and get money. There are enough different banks. Bank of Ceylon Sampath Bank Peoples Bank HSBC Commercial bank etc etc. Any bank is good. You just walk in and ask a teller you need to get money from your card. They will help you.

As a solo, seasoned traveler. I found Sri Lanka to be unsafe. I experienced racism, inflated prices, overcharging, pick pocketing three times, attempted bag snatching once, harrassment, one man touched me up (first time anywhere), intimidation from bus conductors. One night someone followed me home and tried to break into my room. If you ask a Sri Lankan they will deny any problems exist because the culture can be disingenuous. Put simply as a Whiteman or Sunai as they call us, I was a target for the bad people and there are many bad people in Sri Lanka who want to take advantage of you. Never again. It's worse than India. I've felt safer in Colombia.
