Hie! Your dance is amazing!! Kurokami itself looks like a really emotional dance, and the first time I saw it I could inmediately tell there was a deep meaning behind it. You're great, keep up the excellent work!!

Arigatou gozaimasu! ^_^ Yes, it's a very emotional dance, but so beautiful to watch and dance. :) I love the emotions that can be conveyed through nihon-buyo style dance. Thank you again so much, I definitely will! ^_^

@@thehoustongeisha hai!! It's one of the few dance forms I can do because of a back injury. Unfortunately the back injury dose interfere with my Nihon buyo dance practice and performance. It leads to my dances not being "proper", but I try my best. I saw the way you tucked your leg under for the sitting/spinning part. I never new how it was done! It looks similar to some brake dancing moves. I'll have to work on that move for dances like 'black hair' (kuriokami)... arigato gozimasu H-San!!

@@thehoustongeisha arigato gozimasu!! Yes most people don't know I have that. I have gotten comments about why I don't dance 'right', but I don't even know what to say back. I hesitate on talking about my back injury. But watching you dance helps me want to keep doing this. I was inspired by the real maiko and geiko years ago, and even though I am a henshin/kimono-san I am also inspired by those around me in the henshin/kimono-san community. Thank you all for inspiring me and helping me never give up!! In fact I filmed last weekend and I am working on 2 videos!! I am so excited to see where my henshin journey takes me!! Did you teach yourself this just by watching videos of the dance? If so it’s really very good.
I had a teacher of Nihon-buyō help me with this dance, although we didn’t finish it because I had to take a hiatus and then I found a teacher of a Jiuta-mai school who was willing to teach me. I love Inoue-ryū and I was really grateful to that Nihon-buyō teacher who was willing to watch videos of Inoue-ryū dances and learn the choreography herself just to teach it to me, but I want to be able to perform publicly one of these days and I’d feel bad about performing choreography from a ryū-ha that I didn’t actually belong to. Especially Inoue-ryū because they’re so traditional and don’t allow it to be taught outside of Kyoto. So when I found my current teacher who teaches a school of Jiuta-mai I was ecstatic. Jiuta-mai is very similar to Kyomai, they both have a very strong influence from Noh dance, as opposed to Buyō which has a stronger influence from Kabuki dance. That’s what made me fall in love with Kyomai and Jiuta-mai.
Anyway, you did a really good job. That bit where you first get down on the floor and have to slide your leg underneath yourself is soooooo hard to do gracefully but you pulled it off really well.
The only thing I’d say is that at the very beginning when you’re walking forward with your hands in your sleeves, your hands aren’t quite right. That Nihon-buyō teacher I had had me put my hands in my sleeves, make them into fists and bring my fists up to about chest height, about the top of the obi for you. However, upon closer observation that’s not right either. The actual kata is bringing your hands into your sleeves and then you just walk with your arms slightly bent and the back of your hands are facing the audience (but inside your sleeves) if that makes sense. And the only other thing I’d say is your timing is a little off in a few places, which I often struggle with too. It’s so hard to move so slowly, be as precise as the dance demands, and be perfectly on time.
Sorry for the novel length comment, Inoue-ryū and Japanese dance in general is one of my special interests and when I get the chance I can’t help but ramble. Keep practicing, you’re really very good ☺️

@@edienandy Thankyou so much!! 🥰🙇‍♀️ Your kind words are very encouraging and make me smile! 😁 Yes, I learned the dance by watching a video on RUclips many many times. 😅 haha. Sadly as far as I know, there are no nihon buyo classes here in Houston. :( So I have taken to trying to learn on my own as best as I can. :)
That's so interesting! 😁 I know there are so many different styles and Japanese dance, more than I can imagine! And they're all so unique. 😋 Your teacher sounds very knowledgeable and talented! I wish we had someone like that here in Houston!
And Thankyou so much! 😁 That move is not very easy for me but I try my best! 😅
And Thankyou so much for the advice!! 🙇‍♀️🙇‍♀️ This is so helpful because I know there is room for improvement but I'm not always sure how to correct some movements. But this helps so much with the hands since I knew I wasn't doing it quite right but wasn't sure how to fix it. 🤣 So this is very helpful to me and I will work on this when practicing 🙇‍♀️😁 And agreed, timing can be a bit tricky when you have to move so slowly and precisely, it's all so graceful but complex! 😄
And you are completely fine, I loved your comment and loved reading and learning more! Very insightful and helpful! 😁🙇‍♀️❤️

@@thehoustongeisha Thank you so much for your response! I’m always so happy to talk about Japanese dance lol. I know you weren’t looking for any feedback necessarily but I’m glad I could help you with the hands at the beginning.
The teacher who helped me with Kurokami gave me lessons via Zoom actually, she lives in Seattle and I live in Utah so we had to do Zoom lessons lol. She speaks English as well as a native speaker and she’s been dancing Nihon-buyō for decades. My current teacher gives me online lessons too because she lives in Japan.
I would actually really recommend getting in touch with the teacher who helped me with Kurokami, if you’re interested in taking lessons. She’s very nice and I think she’d really help you with just like fine tuning a few things. I mean, you’re doing great on your own, You really are. I could never have taught myself to dance this dance as well as you have, you obviously have a huge amount of talent.
I can’t post an actual link for you because RUclips will just delete my comment if I do, but her website is japanesedance dot online. Except obviously use a real dot instead of typing “dot” lol. You’ll be able to email her from there.
I look forward to seeing more videos from you ☺️

@@edienandy Of course! :) And I actually loved the feedback, helps me so I can improve! :) Japanese dance is not something that is widely practiced where I am so it's difficult to get feedback so your comment was a pleasant surprise! :)
Oh, I see! That's actually really convenient, I didn't know it could be done via Zoom but that makes a lot of sense! I'm definitely going to check that out and visit the link you mentioned (clever way to get around the filter! :D), that would be wonderful. :) Then I can have a little more direction and coaching! Instead of just winging it, lol :D
And thankyou again so much, you're too kind. ^_^ Honestly, I've never actually been good at dance ^ ^; lol. So attempting to learn Japanese dance was a challenge coming from someone who literally never learned any kind of dancing! I wasn't sure if I would be able to understand it or pull it off. But it's been a lot of fun learning and I love doing it! :) There is almost like a peaceful or zen-like feeling when dancing, Like you are just one with the dance and everything else around you disappears, if that makes sense. :D But I hope to improve even more as time goes on! ^_^

@@thehoustongeisha omg saaaaaaame! I’d never studied any other kind of dance before taking Jiuta-mai lessons. I taught myself a few dances before finding teachers just by watching videos over and over again and I’d pick up the choreography little by little. With a teacher I learn the choreography so much faster though. For some reason it’s easier when there’s a person telling it to you. And it’s so helpful to have somebody else to talk to for feedback or answering questions about little things you’re unsure of.
And yes! I love the feeling of dancing a dance once you’ve committed the choreography to memory. It’s very calming, and you don’t have to think, it’s almost like meditation for me. It’s wonderful to feel one with the dance and the music. And so satisfying when you make the right movement or pose at just the right time, for me the stomps are particularly satisfying lol.
By the way, Kaya-sensei (JapaneseDance Online) has a RUclips channel which I think is under that same JapaneseDance Online name, definitely check out her videos. She’s an exquisite dancer.
