One of the truly underappreciated classics of American popular music history.
What a song!
I agree ! The whole album is fantastic !
Strong contender for most underrated song in their career. Shame they only realised relatively late how much of an asset it was to their live set
Yes up there with Airport Man !
@@nickpearce9441 😂
It isn't underrated for me because I also happen to be a Sonic Youth fan and I highly doubt there are many REM fans that love that band as well. I don't know how people don't notice Peter Buck channeling Thurston Moore here. He's obviously never utilized this avant garde noise rock style again because most so called REM "fans" wanted him to go back to the jangly 60's Byrds style guitar sound.
Well screw those posers because I LOVE Peter's guitar tone and dissonant chord progression style just as much as I love that jangly arpeggio reverb style guitar style.
Come to think of it, I wonder now if Thurston's participation on the song Crush With Eyeliner inspired him to take SY's sound in a less hardcore direction and more towards that soft, beautiful, post rock sound that sound begin a year after Monster with the album Washing Machine. Hmmmm....
@@lotusglobe2671i don't know I think there definitely will be a few especially as they toured together. I love both bands and really love Monster
@@alexbaker7517love monster too man chock full of gems. Still mystified why it was panned when it came out. Classic album possibly their best with automatic.
One of my favourite Songs of REM - brillant guitars, uncompromising, hard, loud!
How does this song have so few views? It's one of the best!
REM's music has aged VERY well. This is an yet another example. What a great song...how did it stay under the radar?
Because it was on Monster and not Automatic for the People which was mind-blowing for casual listeners not familiar w/ REM’s previous work save for Losing My Religion. 🙄
@theoinkbox you're right.* I* was that casual listener, and I didn't even like losing my religion or any of REMs other stuff. I'm not sure what made me purchase Monster, but all I knew is that I DEVOURED this album....I lived, slept , ate it....studied to all my exams (it didn't help that I had undiagnosed ADHD, so I got VERY hyperfocused into this album) - the whole thing will always be a favorite.
Yep. I don't sleep i dream.
Incredibly underrated album and song. Monster was incredibly solid all the way through.
One of their best albums. Easily in their top five. It rocks, it shreds, it kicks ass. Love it.
@@davidbowman4259 This. For me it's my favoureite REM album together with new adventures in hi-fi. I always thought they should have stopped after that
How is it underrated though? It was both musical and financial success right up there with Out of Time and Automatic... Were you there when it was released? I was and it played everywhere. A great album, classic, and definitely not underrated.
Love that fuzz !
Fuzz with the Buzz !
I love the scratchy sound of the guitar 😍😍😍😍😍😍
Here comes that awful feeling again
Welcome the ugly animal
I hold my breath to watch you swing
My high rope acrobat ball and chain
I'm not afraid, I messed it, messed it, messed it, messed it up
I've got my telescope head in the haystack
I'm getting tired of your dodgeball circus act
Put pepper in my coffee, I forgot to bark on command
Here comes that awful feeling again
Make way for monster jealousy
The strong man kicked sand into my breakfast cereal bowl
I'd spelled your name with Oatios
He messed it, messed it, messed it, messed it up
I've got my telescope head in the haystack
I am tired of your dodgeball circus act
Put pepper in my coffee, I forgot to bark on command
If I were you I'd really run from me
I'd really, really wish that I were you
When I get loose, I'll climb a tree
And drop a load on your head
This monster in me makes me retch, you messed it, messed it up
I've got my telescope head in the haystack
I am jealous of your dodgeball circus act
Put pepper in my coffee, I forgot to bark
Put pepper in my coffee, I forgot to bark on command
Do you smell jealousy?
Do you smell jealousy, jealousy, jealousy?
Another fine song from REM !
Love the drumming
One of their most underrated songs!
"If I were you I'd really run from me,
I'd really, really wish that I were you.."
Perfection!
One of their five best albums. Love it.
Such an underrated song !
This. Song. Right. Now.
Whoa! That's every 60's garage punk song in one!!!
R.E.M. kicking ass

Great guitar work
Wow! Amazing! I can hear the lyrics of the song! :D
Y! I love when he says,'Uncle Ben' ;-)
On command!
The titled track of the whole entire album 💿 and that’s circus envy.
Agree. I believe rem brought the album title from this song
Very nice.
Damn! This is one of the angriest R.E.M. songs I have ever heard!
30 years ago today, Monster was released
Fuzz bass- droppin a load-on your head!
Amazon music experts, in Amazon prime music, created a list that appeared to be a top 100, titled rediscovering REM.
To get to the point, if Circus Envy doesn’t make the top 100 (for me, it makes my top 10…usually my top 5 and sometimes number 1), you don’t know shit about REM
FUZZY FEEDBACK!!!!!? YEAH
Queens of the stone ageishh
QOTSA may have liked this album.
Very Sonic youth, great song
Top song

Brought here by page 92 of Polaroids from the Dead by Douglas Coupland.
sounds like it could have been written by Kurt Cobain
Kurt was going to collaborate with REM on this album.
@@sydglover4842 not exactly. He wanted to work with Michael Stipe on an acoustic solo record but he never called him back.
@@Safetysweet it is the album that would have been instead of monster though, probably
@@lunarsunrise9303nah monster was actually at quite an advanced stage when Kurt died. I believe he'd even heard a couple of tracks
@@alexbaker7517And the track Let Me In is about and dedicated to Cobain.
If I were you I'd really run from me...
Exact words spoken by my ex. Dumbass me didn't listen.
for me thier best album togetehr with new adventures in hi-fi. after that only the abyss
Those were the albums from when I was in high school '94 - '98, brings me right back everytime!
REM after Berry left for health reasons were just as adventurous as before. Let’s hear your music, see if it compares w/ their “abyss.” 🙄

I much prefer Peter Buck with an electric guitar. Wasn’t really a fan of the stuff in between Green and this.
Superb! :-D
