    Here were some of my favorite betas! These are not in any particular order and I'm not attempting to put down any of the betas I did not include in this list. I love and appreciate all the betas I hired. I just wanted to list the ones that provided the best feedback and communication in my opinion so other writers can get that same useful feedback on their own work in case you are in need of a beta.

    Hey y’all! I’ve noticed that this video has been getting a lot of attention recently and I wanted to say thank you for the support! This has to be my most popular video and I appreciate all the comments and likes. But also, apologies for the low quality. I made this during the early stages of my channel and I promise that I’m trying to improve in a lot of areas I struggled in here. Mostly related to mic and camera quality as well as correcting my speech amongst other miscellaneous issues. My more recent videos are much better in terms of quality and I plan on continuing to upgrade my equipment and trying to get better at this whole RUclips thing haha. Thanks for stopping by and consider sticking around if you wanna follow my journey as an author ^^

    Good content, but the music was very distracting and you might be more effective if you slowed down you speaking. Thanks for the content.

      Thanks for the advice. I’ve noticed both things recently and do plan on toning down the music in my videos. I was mostly trying to cover some background noise but I don’t think that did any good so imma try and find different ways to cover it. And my speech isn’t something I can really control by myself so I started speech therapy recently to help me correct my speed and also my lisp. Also Ofc :> Thank you for watching!

      @@billyalarie929 yes totally! I can’t afford anything fancy right now, but I did get one of those mini mics that people use on Tik Tok and it’s already a huge improvement! I’ll be using that in my future videos until I can upgrade to something better :>

    Thanks for this post. As a published author, I actually stop publishing books because the editing/beta reader process! As a teacher and avid reader it never occurred to me to get paid to edit, share my opinion and read!
    I’m considering posting an add on Fiverr now…thanks again.

      Of course! Editing and beta reading can make you some decent money too so it’s a great path to take! I edit and beta read books on Fiverr as well and it’s honestly really amazing to make money doing what you love, so I definitely recommend posting some gigs there. :> Good luck! ^^

    I've got two questions: With reader reports, is that a template they have or one you give them? And on average how long did they take to read your work?
    I'm at the beta stage now, and finding people, even via my moderately sized social network, has been a challenge.

    • @RossSterling
      @RossSterling  Год назад +3

      It’s something they give you at the end. Usually they have their own template but sometimes it’s as simple as just a document with a bunch of thoughts written down. I do however suggest giving them custom questions to answer based on issues you’re having with your book. There’s no need to format it yourself unless you want to. Some may charge extra for the extra questions too
      On average my nearly 90k book took the betas anywhere from 2 weeks to a month. It kind of just depends on the seller. You can request a quicker delivery but will cost extra.
      And yeah it is quite hard trying to find betas within your social network. I searched every website and got virtually none which is why I had to hire them. If you have any more questions feel free to ask
      Good luck and happy writing!

      @@RossSterling Thanks for insights. I've got a set of questions I'm using to interview betas, and trying to hold off on doing any re-writes until I've had a few more betas and can map out the areas that need improving based off frequency of what gets mentioned as needing some work.
      I wanted to stick with just interviews, since you can really improvise and get some great insights in that format, but that only works when you find enough people to interview... Written insights are better than no insights though, so I suspect I'll end up with a mix of both.

    • @RossSterling
      @RossSterling  Год назад +1

      @@josephanastasio That's a very good game plan and similar to what I did. I would hold off editing until I got all my feedback in and finished a plan on how to improve.
      Also, you said interviews? Like face-to-face interviews to get first impressions maybe? I've never done that with betas so I'm not sure what you mean by that but whatever works for you! I personally like written insights better since it gives betas time to think of proper answers, especially as my experience as a beta reader, certain viewpoints might change over time so it's good to let the feedback sit before giving it to the author. But first impressions are also good too or whatever your goal is with the interviews :>

    How does the hiring process work? I looked at it today and was a bit confused. And does it matter if my book is an ebook

    • @RossSterling
      @RossSterling  5 месяцев назад

      If you’re going to hire a beta reader online, especially through a freelance platform, the manuscript will have to be an ebook. Or at least some sort of Google or word doc. Betas can’t leave comments and corrections on a physical book even if they’re willing to receive a physical copy. And even if they don’t offer in line comments, I don’t know if any betas that take physical books. As for the hiring process, it depends on what you mean. What are you struggling with specifically? On Fiverr, I just found gigs that matched my book’s genre, word count, and my budget. You can also message sellers if you have any questions. Once you place the order, you send them a copy of the manuscript and they’ll deliver it back with comments and feedback. It’s pretty simple. My best general advice is to find betas with good reviews and who specify in their gig that they read the genre your book is in. If you have any more questions let me know and I can try and help :)

      Yeah of course! I listed all of my favorite betas in the description of this video. Though a full list of everyone I worked with and recommend including beta readers and more can be found here: docs.google.com/document/d/1LUrLRePZ_feq5tlqlvS7FxM7sMlVYp8wKF9No-Tvhqk/edit?usp=sharing
      I'm not sure if that link will work in this comment, so if it doesn't work, you can go to the description of one of my recent videos titled: "how I published a book at 19" and find the link there. Some of the services may not be available anymore but a lot of them still seem to be up :) Good luck with your book!

    You found 10 beta readers for an average of $20 apiece?! Personally, I wouldn't trust that--my fear being they may skim and not get a real idea of the story as it builds and/or as a whole. $100 minimum per beta read is about right. There are some newer sellers who offer steep discounts to ramp up their business, but if you hire some of those, I suggest also forking over for a couple of more...thorough readers. [Another thing that springs to mind is that some of these dirt-cheap beta readers may actually steal your work. After all, no sellers have to provide their full name or outside contact info, so you're all but SOL if your work is plagiarized before you can publish it.)

    • @RossSterling
      @RossSterling  7 месяцев назад

      Honestly I understand the concern and it’s good to always be cautious since theft/plagiarism is real and hiring someone who doesn’t plan on really reading the book is a possibility, but not all of them were that cheap, that was just the average. And the few who were that cheap proved themselves to be trustworthy and did an amazing job. I have the comments and reader reports to prove it. Plus, some betas read your book for free which is super common when looking for betas online, so if people can want to beta read it for free, it’s not impossible to believe that some will beta read it for a cheap price. Some of them weren’t great and did just skim it or not really give me any feedback, but a lot did and I’m super thankful for it. I knew some people who did it for that cheap because they just like reading books and don’t care to make a living off of it. And some people who charged that little to get some reviews and now charge much more than before. Upwards of $100 or more actually. I remember there was a time when I priced my own beta reading services at a similar price to get started and now I charge about $200 to read a book as long as mine. So you can definitely find some trustworthy beta readers for that price who also read the book very thoroughly. It’s mostly about doing proper researching, looking at reviews, talking to the sellers, and using your gut instinct if something feels funny. This is especially good for people who may not have the financial needs to afford such expensive services. I couldn’t afford a lot of expensive ones so I hired only a few pricy betas and hired a lot of cheap ones on the side. Obviously no one is obligated to do this, but it’s what I did and it worked out for me. My book has been published for over 5 months now and I’ve had no issues with theft/plagiarism or not having enough feedback to better the quality of the book. All in all most of the betas really helped and were amazing to work with :>
