That was my first thought - there's no space! But I think if she gets a China cabinet in the dining space (I didn't go back to see the room again - I know it's narrow, but think there was room at one end??) and a tall armoire in the family room where the two big paintings are or even a roomy buffet in that spot that she can hang artwork over and put a lamp (or two) on, that should free up some storage. I should have looked before typing this, but there may even be space at the end of the kitchen (where the door is) to put a baker's rack that she could store dishes or serving pieces or appliances on... Even a small pie safe sort of cabinet would hold and hide appliances.

I can’t even begin to explain how much I appreciate the “practical” progress of organization. Understanding a space and creating functionality is equally as pretty-to me-as traditional decorating. Needless to say, I’m looking forward to seeing how you guys make the space work for you as you live in it more!

For a temp solution, on Amazon they have these little circle stickers that are raised like bumps. You put them in the corners on the inside of drawers and cabinets so when you close them it makes it a lot quieter! Instead of the wood hitting wood when they close it’s wood hitting the little bump stickers and it made a big difference in our kitchen for noise! Also a lil WD-40 on the hinges I believe would help with some squeakiness!

This is so fun, watching you settle into your new house! Congratulations on the purchase.
Since you don't really have anything much to go in the 'front' living room area, maybe it would be nice to set up your dining room there. Then when you reno the kitchen, you could take out the wall between the existing kitchen and that dining area back there, and make one large kitchen with a nice over-sized island and a walk-in pantry. It would probably still leave lots of room for a small breakfast nook at the windows overlooking the backyard/pool. Just a thought.

I’m a home organizer for 27 years. When you have multiple of anything:cereal boxes etc. instead of stacking the boxes next to each other as MaCenna place then. Instead put 2nd (or newer box) begin the one in front as you would put soda cans in the fridge. It gives you more visibility & you’ll know what you have & how many. If your knife rack is shifting fold a old kitchen towel & place it in the back of the drawer to brace it.

It’s so close it makes zero difference and I don’t have them cluttering up the place. Now if I can just figure out a way to keep all my decor pieces without looking like I have 3 times the amount I need I’ll be good. 🤣 I’m no minimalist that’s for sure.

Check out the channel called „The 2nd Empire Strikes Back“ and see episode Sewer Solved!! S3 EP19 at around 6 minutes. He uses shellack with some powders to dye it. I hope you see this comment! That tool you called a 'sharpener' that came with your knives does NOT actually sharpen knives. It's called a honing rod and it realigns the edge of a dull blade by "correcting" or "trueing" the edge but does not really sharpen it. The knife will then not need to be sharpened so often.

MaCenna, I was tired of giving up space in the kitchen cabinets for appliances I need, but use rarely. So I had my husband put up a 5-shelf shelving unit in the garage but just off the kitchen & out the door that goes from the house into the garage. I call it my appliance pantry & it has the Nesco turkey roaster, Insta-Pot, my crock pots, water bath canner, canning jars, the deep fryer, my enamel roasting pan, & a few other things. To keep all that clean I found a cover on Amazon for it made from heavy duty clear vinyl & it has great zippers on it for very easy access. I always rinse things off but the cover completely envelopes the shelves & keeps it from getting dirty/dusty in the garage. It freed up so much space inside! You might consider doing the same for some of your larger or seldom used appliances.
ps-The house is darling! Congrats to you & Romeo! 👏🏻👏🏻

16:05 those are boning shears for cutting poultry bones. Look up how to spatchcock a chicken. Delicious. You won't dry out the white meat while you're trying to finish the dark meat.
I'd make one of those narrow drawers next to the oven for potholders. You want those easy access.
In the slidey rack up high you could put seasonal stuff you don't need as much, but pulling out on the slider makes it easier to get to when you do want it.
That thing you called a knife sharpener isn't actually--it's for honing the blade between times you take it to get sharpened. I like a magnet cookbook stand for my knives, since yes loose knives are dangerous (and bad for the blades, worse than the dishwasher) but blocks can also bend them prematurely and you have to hone them more often. I have mine magneted behind the cookbook stand so they're out of temptation for the kids, and a cookbook can sit open on the front when I bake.
If you don't use the wine glasses etc., just declutter them and free up that space for other things, like small appliances you use less often. You can put them in the slidey drawer above the microwave too; it doesn't have to be on the wood. Plus the slider makes it easier to access (unless they're super heavy, I suppose).
You'll find yourself moving things around, so let that happen before you spend too much. You have to live in the space a while and see how you like things and how stuff works and where you tend to pile and use things. Looks like you have a great start though! It's a fun project, especially when you have a whole new house to play with.

  • @pamcharles926

Put your plates in the drawer by your dishwasher; that's where we keep ours and it's easier. Hang up the things you can, like the bag dispenser. Don't go putting dishes in the cabinets that you don't use; if you keep with just placing your basics it'll be so much easier.

When you do remodel the kitchen, open it up to the dining room and incorporate a larger space with island seating, lots of storage. Your living room is large enough to fit a dining table, just move the sofa closer to the fireplace. Or use the front room as foyer/ dining because how often do you use a formal dining room? It could hold a big table with flower vase and books that converts to dining.

I love your logic regarding how you packing the kitchen. Functional and practical. I would do what you mentioned at the end with the dry goods in jars, and in that larger cabinet next to the range hood I’ll do plates and the bowls ( plates at the top and bowls at the bottom). This would free more space for pantry items on the other side. So where you have the plates you can still do oils and taller cooking things and now it would be next to the other pantry things. I’m sure once you get your dinning room sorted you will add a server (china cabinet) to put your fancy dishes and glasses.
I’m excited for you and it’s all coming together.

Hi McCenna! Why don’t you get a pretty cabinet for the kitchen to store things in? Everything is looking awesome! I really love your house.😊

You need to grease the hinges and put the felt rounds so your cupboards are quieter :)

The best advice I’ve heard for organizing your kitchen is to imagine you are cooking a meal and think about where to put things so the process goes smoothly. Also, use lazy Susans and shelf risers to maximize the use of your cupboard space. I’d give serious thought to getting a freestanding pantry cupboard to put against that blank wall. It will give you lots more storage space, which you will need when you grow your family.

Those “scissor” type shears in your knife set are bone shears; like for cutting the breast bone of chicken.

Put your spices in the drawer next to stove in glass spice jars alphabetical. So convenient.

YEARS AGO I HAD A GERMAN SHEPHERD WHO COULD TELL TIME. MY SISTER WORKED SWING SHIFT & SHE KNEW WHEN TO GO SIT BY THE WINDOW & WOULD PEEL OUT WHEN THE BLINKER ON THE CAR WOULD COME ON 2 HOUSES AWAY. HILARIOUS.

Your shallow cabinet is for spices. Surprised you don't use Norwex enviro cloths ( I lobe mine) I don't sell it.
Kinsley is finicky like my baby girl. Your counter tops look like Drew's new floor!

The things over the range will get grease and smoke on them., especially if the vent hood is on, since wood is porous.

You should make Romeo’s office where your master bedroom is now. That also gives access to a bathroom when everyone is in the pool. And you will be closer to the baby’s room upstairs.

I was really sad when you said you'd need to redo the kitchen but after seeing you try to desperately put stuff into the cabinets and myself also trying to like think how to put stuff better and not being able to I completely understand needing to redo it. Everything just seems like such inconvenient sizes and stuff. You could get a pretty vintage/antique cabinet for the hostess ware and stuff that you don't use as often. Maybe even put a coffee bar on it to save even more space.

You need to add little cushion dots on bottom of cabinet doors so they don't bang. Lol
You could add cup hook or command hook to hang colander on cabinet door , add a lid holder to mount on cabinet door . So then the lid drawer would be empty for something else . 🤗

The big drawer under the cabinet that you put your pots and pans in would be good for some of your small appliances that you use most often. I would definitely keep an eye out for a sideboard to be placed under the windows in the breakfast nook. It would give you more dish storage. Not sure where you plan to put your designated eating space, but it might look kind of neat in that first room you walk into at the front. Not sure how many steps that is from the kitchen. 🤷🏼‍♀️❤️😊

The sliding baskets in the bottom drawers are for your dishes, bowls, etc. The ones you don’t fill can be used as a pantry/storage

Question: Isn't the other side of the of the kitchen (room that shares a wall with the cooking range, that leads to the backyard) an actual butlers pantry area? If not you might want to consider it be used as such with the lack of storage area in the actual kitchen.
Love the house! Can't wait to see what you do with it!

I’ve owned several older homes with original cabinets and they were all small. My hat off to the women who cooked everything from scratch back then and dealt with those cabinets. Maybe on one of those empty walls you get an old fashion floor to ceiling cupboard or armoire. But what ever you do will look awesome. I love going through the move- in process with you. Can’t wait for your Momma to visit. 💕

I’m childishly proud that “my” MaCenna bought ON sneakers. I’m from Zurich in Switzerland, where they were created. It’s also a company with a great philosophy.
Btw, these are poultry shears. To cut off wings and legs and open the ribs. Very helpful when butterflying a chicken, or after cooking to portion the meat. They cut through the bones very well.

NEVER place ANY kitchen utensil, knives especially, in a dishwasher. The temperatures in dishwashers are set very hot and the drying cycle is hot air. It will strip the finish and dry the wood out, ruining the wood and cause it to deteriorate. Always hand wash, dry and put away. Also, don't leave them to sit in a sink full of dish water.
