50 years ago you caught these by the bucket. Blood worms were the ticket. Chum with cat food or crushed mussels with yellow sinkers. Then they disappeared, now in NY you can keep 1.
Yes and just tossing hand fulls of rice or even pea size gravel for chum. In a boat we use to use a toilet plunger on a long stick to just stir up the bottom. You need to use about a size 4 long shank hook and only thread a two inch piece of worm.
@@davidbraun4922 foreign trawlers were constantly hitting the waters . You could stand on Jones Beach and see 5 trawlers at a time . Small size , no limits back them , sign , those were the days my friend
@@davidbraun4922 Honestly, many were lost due to the draggers / commercial fisherman. Then you had stupid people keeping fish you could see through. When I was a child and learning to fish, the winter flounder were in great abundance. I went on a party boat with my dad. We caught many, but through back tons because they were too small. I decided to walk around the boat and saw another angler who kept every single flounder he caught, no matter the size. I grabbed one of the small ones, you could just about see through it, and asked him why he kept it, there's no meat on it. Unfortunately, there were too many anglers like this one. I went on another fishing trip for winter flounder later with a friend of mine and his dad. We caught close to 100 flounder between us, we only kept 45. We threw back all the ones we could tell were females. This was all before there were regulations. So, both commercial and recreational fisherman are to blame. The fishery should be completely closed to both for 5 years. No bi-catch allowed of winter flounder for commercial. Don't get me started on Fluke or Seabass regs.
Geez! Winter flounder were as common as spearing in the 60’s and most of the 70’s. Jamaica bay, The entire shore from Sandy hook NJ to Montauk point was paved with them. We anchored up in four foot of water in East Moriches and frequently had over 150 fish. Don’t worry, we only kept 10 or so. In the late 70’s they rapidly dwindled and as of the 80’s they were gone.
for sure, I used to catch them all over the North Shore of Island in the mid 70's. I hope they make a come back...they were easy to catch and good eating!
Cool video...haven't seen so many winter flounder caught in one day in decades. They also like clams and mussels. I used to put a piece of corn on after hooking the before mentioned or the worm. It would help keep it on the hook a little better.
Hey sea money I seen your video when you used the large spook with the 2 split rings trouble hook . So I bought one rigged it up the same way and it go's under water I don't remember seeing your's doing that.
Great to see. When I was a kid, a long time ago, we could catch as many as we wanted. They’re not shy. You don’t need a whole sandworm…… see you at Dave’s.
It's all part of spring for me and my friends. Shad, Flounder, Opening day trout, Striped Bass and the Blues last of all. How can you not enjoy fishing with bait ( Sandworms & Bloodworms) that can bite you and draw blood? Great video. Happy safe travels and God bless.
Winters are very tasty. Haven't fished for them in 35 years. But in the 60s & 70s we got loads of them in Barnegat bay up to 3 3/4 lbs. I recall the smell of the meat smelling like shrimp when cleaning them. Didn't bleed them out back then.
I used to throw a lot of sandworms into tough conditions ...surf ,bridges sod banks ....the whole worm will stay on if u turn your hook as soon as u dig In to head and pinchers and turn hook out u can put two big sands on and cast into wind
@@TheReidsOutdoors wtf are you on? of course I can complain, inadequate legal limits are the reason they're so rare. You must be borderline braindead if you couldn't put that one together.

Get yourself a baiting needle. We use them regularly for ragworm (think it’s your sand worm) in the uk. Another trick we do is dunk them before you cast. Helps them stiffen up a bit and toughen up. Regular cast them out to 150yrds with a 5oz sinker and catch good flatties doing it.
ok can we air the grievences? winter flounder not southern flounder, northern kingfish not sea mullet or whiting, mole crabs not sand fleas sorry just hitting everything
Thanks for sharing! Probably a long shot but here on the west coast when moneys short I've caught saltwater fish on night crawlers. Much cheaper than sand shrimp here. Give it a try?
That’s wild local tackle shops don’t sell the fin strike yellow long shank flounder hooks with the little corn nugget those are in every tackle shop in mass
Hey brother, looking to get on a party boat for flounder in late July. Looking to go out of point pleasant nj. Your thoughts on which boat? And any other tips are appreciated!
Jamaica 2 does pretty well.. dauntless would probably be seabassin, sometimes the sneaky thing to do is hop on a seabass trip which goes further offshore and just target fluke, which could be a bust, but you might end up catching better quality that way.
@@ChrisMcInteehey man I’m doing a school project that involves catching different species I’ve been trying to locate a good winter flounder spot in the Rhode Island ct area would you be able to help me find one
Try bank mussels pick them yourself shuck em and salt them have always worked very well for winter flounder if u don't want to buy the sandworms next time
I do a ball with the worm 🪱 on the hook, and then use a little bit of magic thread (red) to hold it, it works really good, and for stripers, a much bigger amount of worms kept in place the same way…..
Its amazing how you can say how rare these fish are now compared to years past and then kill the ones you catch instead of taking one and leaving the rest to breed
Dont use the whole worm, flounder mouths are tiny and the worms are expensive. When i was a kid in the seventies, early eighties we would cut a worm into five, six pieces worked great would catch dozens all you need is a little piece and you dont have the problem of casting the worm off.
Too many people taking too many buckets full of fish and now after we shit up the ocean too, we can only keep 2 fish. And only 1 striper. And there aren't any more 60 pound cod either. We humans are doing a good of wrecking what we love. Tight LInes, Joe

Good shit. If you ever do this again and wanna chum, a carp bait spomb works good from shore. Chopped up clams, sandworms and beach sand mixed up.
