I worked at a marine dealer in the 70's and 80's. IIRC, we didn't see a lot of Paragon transmissions - mostly Borg Warner. You did well getting out, disassembled and reassembled on your own. Don't beat yourself over the setbacks. Good luck with the new/rebuilt unit. You could be opening up new avenues of future employment! Oh... and really like watching you folks - especially Jetty.
Ed, he has actually learned a bunch even though it was not fixed. He learned how not to remove a bearing and probably a bunch more stuff. I have been in his shoes a hundred times and I refuse to pay anyone to do anything. This stuff is not magic. Good on him for trying. This is how you learn.
Yup def learned a ton. I know EXACTLY how the transmission works now when before I had no clue. Very interesting what a planetary gear and reverse brake band do. All that.
I cant say how big of props I give to you guys for marching forward the way you do - you make me want to tackle more repairs and things than I have in the past. Keep on being good to each other (and Jetty) and God Bless in your life and your travels.
Good to see the Lady of the house not complain when the guy strips a gearbox in the kitchen! :)! Hope you sort that soon, is a good gearbox that, lasted for a long time!
Very impressed Billy. Your patience is stellar. I could not have completed those repairs. It's great watching you and Sierra. She has a great outlook for you even when your struggling. That's the sign of a perfect pairing. Here's to hoping the replacement goes smoothly. Charles
AWESOME I LOVE TO SEE YOU TWO YOUNG PEOPLE ENJOYING LIFE ! EXPERIENCING LIFE LIVING !!! NOT PLAYING VIDEO GAMES IN YOUR PARENTS BASEMENT YOU THREE ARE TRUELY A INSPIRATION !!! MY WIFE AND I HAVE BEEN MARRIED 35 YRS WE HAVE BEEN TOGETHER SINCE WE WERE KIDS WE HAVE ALWAYS TRYED TO LIVE OUR LIFE WITH SOME ADVENTURE !!! WE STILL ARE ! ENJOY YOUR YOUTH AND YOUR TIME TOGETHER STAY SAFE !
I recommend you keep the original trans around, take to a qualified machine shop for repairs, then keep it onboard as a spare. I am hoping you verified that the shaft can turn by hand . You need to verify that the cutlass bearing is not jammed up as a result of the grounding..
Yes great advice for a single screw and since your coming to Long Island take it to Marine Engine and Transmission in Deer Park see Paul the owner he is the BEST around. He will fix it and test it right there.
You two are great. My wife and I have a boat up here in NY that we run on lake Ontario. I am never as chill as you when something breaks on the boat- I go completely mental and yell and curse. Definite bonus points for remaining so calm and focused. I wish you two loads of success and am going to make a donation in your name. Keep up the awesome videos!
frustration. Cuss, scream, get it out. life is up and down. feel the emotions man. you will feel better and then you'll be able to focus so much better. wishing y'all only the best of luck!!!
OMG...Billy you amaze me. You both have a great attitude. You WILL get Neverland cruising again. Y'all will be on LI shortly. Keep the faith. Had to go to FL yesterday, ate at the Royal Cafe & went over the Indiantown bridge. I looked for your boat even though I knew you were not there, i fly back to LI on Thurs. Keep us all posted. Good luck & God Bless.
What an ordeal! At least you have kept your sense of humor over the whole thing. Here's another fortune cookie for you..."How much deeper would the ocean be without sponges?"
Billy I couldn't even tackle that kind of repair job. I applaud you for even attempting. Good luck I love your vids and good luck! I hope it all works!
15 years as an auto tech and 5 of them diagnosing/rebuilding manual/auto transmissions. I can honestly say that they are never easy to work on, they are picky, finicky and expensive. Without the right tools (such as a hydraulic press and the special fitting adapters/plates) it can be impossible to rebuild (eg with the needle bearing you dented). Don't be too hard on yourself, you did better than I would have if I was in your shoes, at least you tried! I've seen guys more qualified than me with way less patience and commitment than you, good job on your attempt!
The more we get to know you the more we love you guys! Great job Billie! Even though that one didn't work out I really respect what you went through. I know you're both ready to get moving. See you soon!!! Thanks
You guys did an awesome job. For a guy who is not a mechanic you looked like you were very methodical in your approach which pays off in the long run. Things didn't work out but it doesn't sound like you totally lost it at any time. Also the angel Sierra's calming influence was hovering over you like a peaceful blanket. Excellent effort.
Sorry guys. I know your frustrated but your positive influence on your vlog is great. You will get over this hump. Just remember this is just temporary. You guys are still doing things most can only dream about. Keep going foward and I am expecting to see you cruising on your next vlog.
Thats not the clutch, its the back of the flywheel where a drive plate connects to and a drive shaft from the transmission inserts in. Always in. The clutch pack are in the gear housing in the center of the transmission. Clutches were fine with almost no wear. Thanks for the recommendation though! Turned out to be a stripped coupling/shaft on the back of the tranny.
Keep smiling! Jetty really adds a lot to these videos. BTW- My dad used to keep a small brass shaft around for doing things like removing that bearing. The idea was that you would tap the brass shaft and since it was softer than the steel you would not damage the steel.
You've my respect. Went through a similar endeavor, resulted in buying a new engine, even 'imported' it from Norway! Spent a year installing it while I lived aboard.
Your positive attitude is inspirational. I had a trawler with a Twin-Disc tranny in the early 1980's. Clanky, but reliable. In 1987 I bought a new, 35' CT Sundeck Trawler with a Ford Lehman SP 135, with the "good" Borg Warner tranny. I sold the boat last October (to get another boat!)... That Lehman engine and BW transmission was awesome. (I had 2800 hours on the engine when I sold it; had replaced most "accessory" parts on the engine, but thank goodness, never had to touch the transmission, nor the innards of the engine. I maintained it to-a-T, myself (with the advice and wisdom of Bob Smith via M.T.O.A.). I can tell you I would never have had the guts, strength, or knowledge to do what you are attempting here. I am very sure I could not have removed that transmission without an A-frame/block and tackle set up in the salon. Yes, I could have taken it apart, but there is no way I could have properly reassembled it. Your perseverance is commendable. I'm a relatively new subscriber, and have back-watched many of your videos. Keep up the great work!
I was wondering what happened, that sucks. After almost 20 yrs as a automotive technician I know that transmissions are a specialty all their own. Bravo on your attempt to do it! On a positive note, Daytona beach isn't a bad place to break-down, nice job on the vid and best of luck.
Hey guys, look on the bright side, ya got the best office view in the world! It isnt the mistake that matters, its the way you fix it! Way to go man. take care you guys.
Thanks so much for sharing all of your travel experiences. I bet a lot of us feel these things only happen to us. You guys are doing great! Keep sharing and best to you!
When I meet someone who says their boat never breaks down, I'm thinking, "You don't even own a boat, do you?". Kudos for taking that thing apart and trying to fix it. Just be glad it happened on the ICW and not in some back of beyond cay in the Bahamas! All part of the adventure! Good luck! We're enjoying following your adventures (and misadventures!).
I know that feeling! putting your all into something and thinking you have done it absolutely correct then its still not fixed. but its still a good experience. these types of experiences are what you learn from, this is why I can do all my own repairs on everything . you win some and you lose some but over all you DO save money even if sometimes it ends up costing more for having attempted yourself. I am impressed with your effort dude and your patience. just happened across this channel, I am allready subscribed, you guys have a good vibe!
Keep your head up man. Even being able to take the transmission out and try to diagnose it yourself says a lot. Sometimes it may be a trivial detail you're missing and sometimes it might be something bigger. If you can, try to find a shop that will take a look at it and maybe work through the diagnosis with you. Show/tell them what you've done already and maybe they have some words of wisdom. Best of luck and be sure to take a break when you begin to get frustrated. Been there before.
Given the circumstances, to have a happy all smiling girlfriend, proud of your efforts at 13:52 is a rare blessing. I think you are both quite lucky to have found each other.
Billy, Sierra is one of the biggest assets to your whole program. She is calm, smart, hardworking and keeps you both focused on proper nutrition and exercise. Besides all that, she's attractive, athletic and capable. Sierra, Billy is calm, smart and persistent as well as very capable and laid back. Jetty is a wonderful dog too. Stay the course. You are all living a charmed life. Great videos. I am living vicariously through you three. Thanks.
The voice of experience here. A valiant effort by you. Five bonus points for each attempt. Next time just take it out and have it rebuilt. But seriously not many people would attempt that rebuild. You'll be fine. Enjoy a few relaxing days and get underway when you can. It is what it is. Nice boat. While your waiting for parts. You should change your fuel filters and buy some fuel stable. The last thing you need is water in your fuel or a clogged fuel filter. It happens a lot when you buy fuel at different marinas. (Crappy fuel or water in fuel). Let's see, check your bilge pump and free it from gunk. Carry a spare bilge pump. Stock up on fuses breakers and crimping tool electrical connectors, liquid electrical tape Give some serious thought to the Lavio Dry Flush toilet. Ruptured holding tank and or wast hoses make for a very nasty clean up. .
A monk once told me " this too shall pass". This is advice for any situation in life. Soon it will be over just grind hard (no pun intended :) to achieve what you want and you shall be in the clear soon. Best of luck and blessings!!!!!!!!!!!
I recognized it from your vid. They lost the roof to the boat carport during Mathew. Dave helped us out with a good hurricane spot up there. Glad u 2 are underway again. Safe journey
Keep at it! Just when you think you're out for the count, given it your all, things will start to turn your way. Props, no pun intended, for doing your own work on the boat!
Great effort on the rebuild. Your well on the way to becoming a Marine Engineer with all the work you have done on the boat, all with great success. Transmission are one of the most difficult jobs to take one, good on you.
Hang in there, absolutely huge respect, I was not expecting this much effort, you are definitely a real G, like they said you'll only get wiser from these kind of experiences, in the end you'll definitely have your stripes earned.
Chalk it up as a frustrating mechanical experience which is part of some of our lives! Look at it this way you had a week long self taught course in transmission repair for that trawler.
Hey guys, noticed you guys were in the Daytona area. My wife and I are fans of the show. We would be happy to help you all with anything you need next time you're in the area.
I commend you both for taking on a project like this. Very brave! Love the videos as you guys always keep it upbeat even in the face of disaster! Keep it up!
Keep your chin up mate...bloody good effort in trying to fix it. This is why I love this channel...you keep it real. Hope things work out okay with replacement transmission...you deserve some good luck for sure👍
Reminds me of trying to replace the bell housing on an old Chevy Blazer. I knew exactly what needed to be done, but I had never actually done anything like that before. So much time and frustration, and I eventually had to admit defeat.
Props for trying to do it yourself man!! Being a mechanic myself I certainly understand your frustration when you're certain you put something together correctly and it still doesn't work right. Good luck bro, and thanks for sharing your vids!!
Tim Taylors boat transmission shop. We all been there Billy trying to do it are self's. Its frustrating but if you find the right guy to help you out its a breeze.
First off Billy, your heart was in the right place when you decided to do this very difficult job. Unfortunately the project was just a bit over your pay grade. Very impressed with your good positive attitude and sticktoitivness! Most true mechanics would find this project a task, especially working down in the bilge area with little to no fresh air or space to move. Hopefully your next episode will show a successful end and you kids continuing your trip North. Give yourself an "attaboy" for just attempting this.
i second stevens suggestion keep the old trans get it fixed and keep it for a spare just in case . i know a few long range cruisers that carry a spare trans and drive plate onboard
I think being a paid lifeguard makes you a special kind of person. When I say paid I mean not a volunteer. The paid guys are the best at the job and are so kicked back in life itself. Nothing in life beats you. They see danger before it happens. You guys have this quality. So cool guys
Ok. Don't mind saying it. I'm impressed. I know how hard tearing apart a transmission and putting it back together is. Though looking at what you're working with and the sound it made (or didn't make) I'm left to wonder if it's as simple as you forgot a key on the shaft.
you guys got me totally hooked! my favorite boat has always been a trawler. And because of you guys I'm gonna get started on my dream. The good thing for me is I'm already an automotive mechanic with lots of engine experience AND electrical! can definitely rewire a boat and rebuild engines and transmissions! but I fear is wood or fiberglass work! I can barley hammer a nail into wood😉 go figure right😱 anyway, I watched all of your videos between Sunday and yesterday, so keep em coming! And again, good luck and stay safe! by the way, you guys are really showing what it means to be a team! God bless
Good Luck! Did I tell you New Smyrna is my favorite Spot. Haha We go to Ponce Inlet all the time. Great fishing near the inlet. Love Disappearing Beach and go up the Lighthouse. Nice little park and a good restaurant there. Smooth Sailing Kids!
David Stevens really should be replaced with a Velvet drive more parts available and a lot more common now
David Stevens Jetty has her own channel. Just saying... ;)
Porsche Collector Good to know... checking it out now
I admire your effort! Most people would never even try, now you know more about your boat and how stuff works. Being self sufficient is a huge asset.
The positive thing is you are learning how to fix the transmission. The best way to learn is by doing. Keep up the great videos!
Herb M he hasn't learned yet.
All that.
skateboarding to the repair shop & LUNCH!
GOTTA LOVE IT KIDS!
God Bless You BOTH!
I'm totally impressed by your ability to just roll up your sleeves and improvise solutions! You can't win them all.
Billy it shows your strong character while having a great relax personality and demeanor and Sierra such a supporting partner, what a team.
bro, I gotta admit, I am very impressed by your tenacity!
I cant say how big of props I give to you guys for marching forward the way you do - you make me want to tackle more repairs and things than I have in the past. Keep on being good to each other (and Jetty) and God Bless in your life and your travels.

I admire your gumption and determination. I admire that your team worked with you and were full of love & support!

Steven Hardy listen to this advise it will be harder to find it next time
Good idea , maybe Have the guy they purchased the rebuilt one , rebuild their old one.
Why ship it which is very expensive due to weight he will be near a top notch shop in L.I
Thank you for the recommendation everyone!

It's great that people can see your life is not all rainbows and unicorns....!! You show the good, bad and the ugly...Well done....
What an ordeal! At least you have kept your sense of humor over the whole thing. Here's another fortune cookie for you..."How much deeper would the ocean be without sponges?"
Hey.. you win . Don't get discouraged you gave it a hell of a try.I would not been able to get that far on rebuilding it.
Billy I couldn't even tackle that kind of repair job. I applaud you for even attempting. Good luck I love your vids and good luck! I hope it all works!
Stay positive, these are the times you'll remember. Good luck you two!
You two seem so positive and energetic! I am impressed with you willingness to tackle something like a transmission!

You're welcome...waiting for the next video. Love the slow motion of Jetty jumping.

haha I wish I had windows in the bilge...
i love being on a boat while its raining. Hard or lite mist. YOU are true adventurers. Good luck.
You guys are fun to watch...I hope all is well with you and I know you will get sorted out because you have a great spirit.
Ugh, I know that feeling too well. Fix/break/fix/break and finally success. It's never on the first try with something new. Nice work.
Thanks so much for sharing all of your travel experiences. I bet a lot of us feel these things only happen to us. You guys are doing great! Keep sharing and best to you!
So proud of this couple, hard workers ( go getters) and really smart. True survivors .i wish then younger generation would learn from this couple
When I meet someone who says their boat never breaks down, I'm thinking, "You don't even own a boat, do you?". Kudos for taking that thing apart and trying to fix it. yeah this channel is the best!

Besides all that, she's attractive, athletic and capable. Sierra, Billy is calm, smart and persistent as well as very capable and laid back. Jetty is a wonderful dog too. Stay the course. yes, thank you for all the advice while we were down! I did some filters, oil change, all the good stuff!
Good luck with the rebuilt. I have two older Perkins motors with original transmissions. I baby them
A monk once told me " this too shall pass".
I'm impressed that you can take video, skateboard, and carry a part at the same time. Good luck and great videos!
You're awesome Billy, never give up, never surrender. You'll get er done.
You guys Rock!!! Its great to see all the effort to keep that old boat going, Thanks again for sharing your adventures with us
You both are awesome! Thank you for being you. I pray you get it going and become the biggest RUclipsrs out there. Thanks you
Glad your safe and getting it handled the best way which is by you learning. stay positive!
Keep at it! Just when you think you're out for the count, given it your all, things will start to turn your way.

I commend you both for taking on a project like this. Very brave! Love the videos as you guys always keep it upbeat even in the face of disaster! Keep it up!

Keep your chin up mate...bloody good effort in trying to fix it. This is why I love this channel...you keep it real. Hope things work out okay with replacement transmission...you deserve some good luck for sure👍

hang in there its bound to start turning your way soon. great channel, thanks for sharing your adventures.
Thanks for coming along!!
Reminds me of trying to replace the bell housing on an old Chevy Blazer. I knew exactly what needed to be done, but I had never actually done anything like that before. So much time and frustration, and I eventually had to admit defeat.

Great story. Y'all are AWESOME!!
You guys sure did have a hard time but made it through and everyone is proud of you.
i second stevens suggestion keep the old trans get it fixed and keep it for a spare just in case . i know a few long range cruisers that carry a spare trans and drive plate onboard
It's good to have a partner you care about when life temporarily turns sour. You two make a great team.
God bless you three! May the next transmission become the transportation! You're still my hero.
All I an say is you did what everyone else would do to try fixing it yourself! I will wait to see how this turns out, Good Luck!
I feel for ya, I've been there done that. It's a good feeling when you get it right!!
Great job guys. As other's have said you are learning. I still think you did very good! Fair winds in a few days, JC
good luck on the repair I hope all works out well for you
You have a great attitude...sorry for the mess
You guys are trending on RUclips right now!
Thanks for the heads up Kevin!
Good luck you two! I'll be looking forward to the next video!
I think being a paid lifeguard makes you a special kind of person. When I say paid I mean not a volunteer. The paid guys are the best at the job and are so kicked back in life itself. Nothing in life beats you. They see danger before it happens. You guys have this quality. So cool guys
They are a wonderful couple ... !!! I always enjoy your videos, every day, I'm a cameraman and editor, I also have a boat. Rudy
Ok. Don't mind saying it. I'm impressed. I know how hard tearing apart a transmission and putting it back together is. Though looking at what you're working with and the sound it made (or didn't make) I'm left to wonder if it's as simple as you forgot a key on the shaft.
PelenTan omg, imagine ... lol. I'd be throwing tools into the water. this guy has patience for sure.

Don't Worry, Be Happy.
We have our fingers crossed for you guys! Good Luck!
I would love to see a video about how you two met. Great videos and very inspirational. Wish you both the best.
Dude. I was so rooting for you to fix it yourself. Hope you got to keep the old one..
We did, thanks!
I have just discovered your videos and I like the positive vibe that you are putting out. Two thumbs up from me :)
Yeah, I was going to ask how you guys keep it so cool headed, but you explained that. Ha Ha. Good luck you 3. Peace!
Great job! You will be on your way soon. I'm proud of you for keeping your cool!! I'd be throwing things...lol
I threw a few things... just nothing important and nothing at Sierra...
you guys got me totally hooked! my favorite boat has always been a trawler. God bless
Dude, keep your head up. Anybody who has tried to work on things mechanical has gone through the same thing.
Sure glad that didn't break on your crossing from the Bahamas! Valiant attempt at fixing the original transmission!
Good Luck! Did I tell you New Smyrna is my favorite Spot. Haha We go to Ponce Inlet all the time. Great fishing near the inlet. Love Disappearing Beach and go up the Lighthouse. Nice little park and a good restaurant there. Smooth Sailing Kids!
