in Europe, there are (and I kid you not!) third-generationers who rather identify with their family's "root country" than with the country they themselves as well as even their parents were born. So that was not surprising to me at all. It has little to do with "racism" or people being mean to you, but more with your family bond, how your family tackles integration, what kind of thinking you inherit from your family, how close your family wants to keep in touch with the root country etc.. It also has benefits, for example that the original language gets passed on and is being accepted more easily by the new generation.

I always find the ‘foreigner’ culture in Korea interesting. In Australia, as soon as you speak the language or wear our clothes (togs & thongs anyone? lol) we consider you Australian no matter your ethnicity or origins. It actually feels like an insult to call someone a foreigner or ask where they’re ‘originally from’, like it implies they aren’t meant to be here or something. Yet in Korea even if you’ve lived there your whole life, you are still considered a foreigner if you don’t LOOK ‘Korean’, and you’ll always get called a foreigner to your face. Han Hyun-min for example! But this isn’t discussing racism or discrimination, rather a note on cultural assimilation? Cultural studies just fascinate me haha Side thought tho, Hyun-min on JAYKEEOUT!!
Pretty sure all foreigners in Australia are labeled 'foreigner/immigrant' unless they commit a positive act or achieve something. Just look at how your media plays with the words: If it is negative news about them like crime? They are "Immigrants" and their ethnicity mentioned. Positive news like they won competition or achieved something? Call them "Australians" or even "Our Aussies"... So what you said is not completely true. On top of that, the comment above has a point too.
That's what you get when you have a homogenous society. What people fail to realize though - is that there is a difference between cultural upbringing & your DNA. In the case of mixed kids for example, if they grow up in Korea - they are 100% Korean (culturally speaking) no matter if some idiot claims otherwise. Your cultural identity tends to be stronger no matter what you look like.
Somi looked Korean too growing up. Look at her sister. But now with full growth, makeup and coming into her body she looks fully european. Girls need puberty to look like themselves. Boys faces don’t change as much from puberty, only body does. By the time she hits 15, with her natural strawberry blonde hair, she’ll be looking totally Canadian like Somi or Nancy. Sienna will always have naturally light hair, be much taller than Korean girls, and grow into her natural double kids. The reason you think she looks “Asian” is cuz Kpop idols try to look so European with their eye surgeries, thin nose surgeries and unnatural light dye jobs.
@@parksnrec9298 true also small children have 'flatter' features, asians do too which is why hapas look more asian the younger they are, then they grow into their white features.

I am mixed asian too and sometimes people disregard the fact that we are both ethnicities not only one part of our ethnicity. People should stop fitting us into one category bc we are both. :)
That happens in the USA too, not just for asians. I'm about half hispanic and half 'white' but 'real' hispanic people say I'm white, and 'real' white people say I'm hispanic. They're both wrong - I'm a person.
@@yanna6815 If we are gonna label places toxic based on stories we hear, let's add Paris to it, shall we. Cause my friend who is half-French half-Japanese has lived his whole life in Paris and got randomly attacked by Maghreb young men a few times (cause he looks "Asian"). 6 months ago he moved to Tokyo and is finally free from his neighbourhood guys. He is not the type to make such things up, and he sounded really frustrated and a bit disappointed in Paris when he told me those stories. He said it's always the same kind of people who would attack him, and whenever he complained, he'd get shut down cause he's "white" and there can't be discrimination in Paris against him.
@@yanna6815 And how is it toxic to label people by their race/ethnicity instead of just the country they live in? I have lived in both Japan and Korea. However, I'd still prefer to be called my home country's citizen and my enthnicity, please, as I am definitely far far away from being either Japanese nor Korean. And even if I lived there for years, I do not want people to call me Japanese nor Korean. It is not "toxic" to call me by my ethnicity, as I am, in fact, born that way. The word "toxic" is being thrown around randomly these days and people keep confusing what they're actually against. Syntax error.

Being a half-white half-asian person who lived in Korea and also speaks Korean, also life as a eurasian person in general, I could relate to what Sean and Sienna were saying. Thank you for making the video! :)
I don't like the fact that some are seen special. Everyone is and should be equal. I hope Korean can understand this slowly.. no more bullying or special attention to others. Everyone deserves to be loved 😭
Really? I disagree. I see nothing wrong with them being perceived as special. I do agree that no one should be perceived as "less than." But "bullying and special attention" are not opposites.
It's not only korean thing. If you are not in multicultural society, it's common experience. Even multicultural countries like usa, canada, Australia still have racism issue.
I am a 50 yo half Korean half Caucasian (American) and when I was born, half Korean children were shunned which stems back to the Korean War. Now, Korea is a little more accepting and that's good.
This is really interesting to see for me, as I am half-korean, half-white living and mostly raised in a white country. I guess I don't really "pass" well as a white so I was always read as asian, but it was really hard for me on my visits as I didn't understand korean. Now I am learning korean since years in order to get better and plan to later also spend time in korea. But I am still at conflict regarding how I may be perceived there, not also being mixed but also homosexual. I am quite nervous if I think about my future sometimes, but also excieted to see how spending more time there will be like. In the country where I live I don't got any asian friends, also my enviroment in not very asian at all and it was always pleasant when in korea people would not always assume I'd be a foreigner (which here, where I live no one does as well but it's also more mixed/open society, still in my childhood I got to experience enough racism). Thank you for the video :) I enjoy knowing I'm not alone being mixed

in Europe, there are (and I kid you not!) third-generationers who rather identify with their family's "root country" than with the country they themselves as well as even their parents were born.
They are such adorable and intelligent kids, big dreams and I’m sure they’ll do so well! Thank you for this educational video, I hope it helps people realize to treat others equally and not point and talk about people that are different from you, rather ask questions and educate yourself!

As a mixed child with no French parents but born and raised in France my whole life, I've always felt French... it's kinda sad that those kids are questioning whether they're Korean because of the way society views them
I mean if someone who's mixed has more dominate eurocentric features than mongoloid/Southeast or East asian features there obviously going to be someone that thinks their white because they dont face the same racism as others who's actually has full blooded ethnical asian features. Its common sense.
@@vortexnutwhale they don't face the same racism ? This is Korea we're talking about, Asians don't face racism for being Asian in Korea
@@vortexnutwhale i'm kinda confused bc if you're saying they think they're white because of the racism they face then ok, but if you're not then... what 😂
I think it is sad too. They are also Koreans and not foreigners.
If you were born in France, you are French. No matter what. ^^
I rarely hear from kids that they want to be a quantum physicist. wow
I've got a 6th-grade student just like him! Reads books on Einstein in his spare time! I was shocked when he started asking me about uranium and radiation in English class one day lol
@gemijuine That's a good thing, though. When I was a kid, I wanted to be a superhero and honestly believed that my superpowers were going to kick in someday, lol. Adults don't have much hope for a kid like that, lol.
That's me when I was 11,now I'm applying to jornalism lol

Cultural studies just fascinate me haha
Side thought tho, Hyun-min on JAYKEEOUT!!
That's because Korea is a real country and not a settlers colony, you can't just be Korean because of magic soil

She looks actually korean with blonde hair thats it he looks more americanish

I am mixed and French although none of my parents are French and people have never put me in one category, those countries sound toxic af
I think it's toxic to identify people by their race/ethnicity instead of just the country they live in
@@yanna6815 If we are gonna label places toxic based on stories we hear, let's add Paris to it, shall we.

Yeah same thoughts here
It's not only korean thing.
Too much white worship going on.
I can tell by how they answered, that they have been made to feel ashamed for being different but they have a good emotional, support system.
I hope they have received some type of trauma therapy so they can grow up to be emotionally healthy individuals.
