So glad you cover practical topics for everyday use! It's great seeing Cinebench scores and all, but knowing about the state of USB4 and the real-world applications of efficient, integrated AI accelerators for video calls is what makes me look forward to getting my Ryzen Framework laptop!
Gordy won't be able to use them because neither of them supports AI generated hair. Actually, NV can add hairwork to their 40 series and it will definitely help.
Biggest thing with Ryzen AI is probably those energy savings, no need to wake up that GPU. And I hope Microsofts will improve their model as well, the quality limitations are probably not in the hardware.
These are the best types of videos; please do many more of these. Instant subscribe + notify. I'm so tired that consumer laptops primarily get benched on Blender, Cinebench, and a H.264 5GB video loop for battery life. None of these are even close to today's workloads of 1) network, 2) light GPU, 3) web-based apps, etc. There ARE big differences, as you show, that I'd pay for! Not for a 15% higher Cinebench score, though, because, shocker, I don't render 3D settings on my bloody thin and light.
Ryzen AI does seem better. I'm hoping ryzen AI is bring used by third party for video editor effects as the CPU and GPU can focus on rendering and audio effects in resolve. Nvidia does have high power drain when you just power up gpuz.
I like the studio effects background blur from the ryzen AI better. Yes, the nvidia version had improved sharpness which was desirable, but if you pay attention to APM off to the side, the ryzen version kept him blurred and the nvidia version made him into a hand model. I want the focus on the user and everything else blurred, so I give the nod to AMD on that one.
I'm interested in the Windows 11 Studio Effects. Sad to report not all current laptops with Ryzen 7040 series (Phoenix) are Studio Effects enabled. Tested on my Lenovo Legion Slim 5 with Ryzen 5 7640hs, sad to report the feature is not available. Kudos to Razer for adopting it soonest.
The Microsoft/AMD Eye Contact is so much more natural looking than Nvidia's. Their background blur sucks though, but Nvidia's did as well when they first released it. Well done AMD.
I still am not a fan of the eye tracking tech, background blur is handy to get rid of distractions. For me the lowest power option wins with laptops, all the background blur options are kind of ok to get rid of distractions in the background.
I was expecting some noise reduction audio processing as well since NVidia RTX Voice tests work with zoom as well? Does AMD have their own audio processing as well.
honestly dont get the big deal when virtually all conference tools have background blur options already, I think skype business doesnt? Had to use that once and noticed 1 minute before the call and I just threw everything under my blanket .. that would have been handy there
Intels virtual camera is broken in the current driver. But openVINO should handle this easily on CPU or iGPU and likely on the upcoming VPU. As a researcher that is working towards benchmarking models, it's a completely different. Eventhough we consider human evaluation as gold standard, there is more and more discovery that shows current Benchmarks don't really agree with human graders (Evtikhiev et al, 2023). And more and more evaluations are proposed that just use larger language models as graders.
Intel's old "extreme quality" option was really great and ran well on an iGPU, but sadly the option doesn't exist anymore and yes it's currently broken...
Does the Microsoft Studio Effects also do microphone filtering? Would be cool to see specifically the battery performance of Ryzen AI vs RTX Voice vs Krisp, I assume RTX Voice is horrible, and Krisp vs Ryzen AI makes no difference, like with the background blur here. This seems to demonstrate that Ryzen AI is pretty damn near worthless for anything like this.
Last time I checked, Krisp sounded like garbage... So lots of room for improvement. But yes it won't make that much difference for audio, as it's lighter and so requires much less compute.
Would the whole 'eye treatment' technology have even existed if we all didn't work from home for 2-3 years due to the pandemic? Too many bad video conference calls!
They may be fun, meme-generating gimmicks, but not really true solutions, other than the fact that the typical Zoom user has a very low standard on acceptable camera quality. Companies are coming up with webcams that rival the quality of photography cameras, and can produce natural background blur. Implementing that same technology onto laptops is what I would see should be the next step. AI may be good at generating very realistic looking photos after a lot of user input, but they are far from where they need to be able to generate realistic videos in real time. You could have easily photoshopped an image of an open eye, and use an eye tracker to place that shopped image to get a similar looking result.
I wonder if it is possible to specify exactly what gets blurred, so that you can use "background" blur when filming objects, kind of like a bokeh effect I guess?
The NVIDIA eye contact thing looks like it doesn't do so well with Asian features. Gordon is absolutely justified in his skepticism and calling it crazy eyes.
I really didn't like the Studio Effects blur, it made me nauseous. Though, I can't exactly explain why. Nvidia Broadcast looks great, though the telemetry sucks. Zoom's version looks the worst, and I would never use it. Nvidia eye tracking is great, but kinda creepy. AMD's version is kind of weak, and not really that effective. Ideally you'd want something in-between the two.
Oh Gordon, Jensen made you so handsome that i dont think i can stare for long. .maybe some more rich eyelashes too? Though you got to give it to auntie Lisa, she doesn't care if your that! hansome, she looks after your pocket too.(low power) "Just loving it" TM
Intel have some of those features like Automatic framing background blur and replace feature on their igpu so that is a good option too if u want efficiency
First gen amd ai for broadcast. Nvidia really overdid it. And how many cores do Nvidia is using vs AMD? Second gen will be just be better when both MS and AMD optimize it more.
Ryzen AI does seem better. I'm hoping ryzen AI is bring used by third party for video editor effects as the CPU and GPU can focus on rendering and audio effects in resolve. Nvidia does have high power drain when you just power up gpuz.
When you stare into the screen, the AI stares back at you.
Yes but. AI does not stare at me. Soviet me stares at I.
I expect apple selling this as focus foo in like 3 years time, and y'all gonna love it.

dafuq
LOL! That was wickedly funny. :-)
Gordon you get cool points for the McDowells shirt straight from comming to America.
Wouldn't have guessed you've watched that movie.
I was going to mention that too. 😂

Pretty neat video, nice comparison. You had me cracking up at the 17:00 mark LMAO.
You had me instantly with the McDowell's shirt. ❤
I tried the Nvidia eye contact feature once and I had to turn it off, the effect is too creepy for me.
Love the Coming to America T shirt Gordon!

Poor Adam. All blury!!

Boss: My my, what big eyes you have.
What I've learned from this - you cameraman would prefer to be working on the next Blair Witch project.
When you stare into the screen, the Al stares back at you.
😂
You know people are going to be staring at each other's eyes at Zoom meetings to see who's got this feature turned on as a game.
The Microsoft/AMD Eye Contact is so much more natural looking than Nvidia's. Their background blur sucks though, but Nvidia's did as well when they first released it. Well done AMD.
It's just AMD's processor. Software is Microsoft, so they will have to make it better.
"But Gordon! What big eyes you have,"
Good Lord that eye contact is freaky
I still am not a fan of the eye tracking tech, background blur is handy to get rid of distractions. For me the lowest power option wins with laptops, all the background blur options are kind of ok to get rid of distractions in the background.
Crazy eyes for sure. I'd probably use NV broadcast and keep everything from around the screen. Tech wise, typical of most NV VS AMD for effects.
Nice Coming to America shirt Gordon!
the blur not being good enough has always bothered me.
Gordon "Crazy Eyes" McDowel
16:56 WTFFFFFF!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
I was expecting some noise reduction audio processing as well since NVidia RTX Voice tests work with zoom as well? Does AMD have their own audio processing as well.
Yes. AMD GPUs have had that for a couple of years now. It came out shortly after RTX vpice.
Are there any other use cases for AI? Teams already has those features without using AI chips. Trying to see why the average user would need AI.
honestly dont get the big deal when virtually all conference tools have background blur options already, I think skype business doesnt? Had to use that once and noticed 1 minute before the call and I just threw everything under my blanket .. that would have been handy there

Don't worry Gordon, Jon will never know you're not focused on him 😂.
From what I've seen the portrait mode in background blur has a better quality than the standard mode
The weird thing about Eye Contact is that it imitates you staring at the camera. But your boss wants you to pay attention to the shared content...
Always on eye contact reminds me of a line from the lyrics of Royal Crown Review's "Friday the 13th" -- "And she shot me that amphetamine stare".
That's indeed creepy!

There's a feature called AMD Noise Suppression on the Radeon graphics drivers, you can use it with any Ryzen APU
Last time I checked, Krisp sounded like garbage... So lots of room for improvement. But yes it won't make that much difference for audio, as it's lighter and so requires much less compute.
So, we're casually creating our own "deepfake" avatars.
Would the whole 'eye treatment' technology have even existed if we all didn't work from home for 2-3 years due to the pandemic? Too many bad video conference calls!
The Nvidia one was behaving weirdly with the camera guy, though. That one hand on the camera unblurred really bothered me.
Nvidia Broadcast Eye Contact = 👁️👄👁️
Curious. I do about 1 video call a year though so not much value to me....I can see it being useful for many others though
What about Blur + Eye Contact? Does having both on affect the quality of either? Combined Power Draw about the same?
nvidia didnt blurred cameraman's hand. For me this is a tie amd vs nvidia.
11:25 Nvidia not working!!
😂 @17:07 instant meme mater
Gordon needs some Soul-glo!
I like the shirt Gordon, that's where I live, Queens NY👍😁
and i was wondering when amd would bring xillinx on consumers

i have a i7 1360p and i have the eye thing on the windows camera...
I know your camera is not in the center of your screen. Why are you looking at the camera and not the screen?
I wonder if it is possible to specify exactly what gets blurred, so that you can use "background" blur when filming objects, kind of like a bokeh effect I guess?
Get them expensive iPhones for this. It can already do this.
Eye contact thing is really sleazy. Who thought of this? Make a feature to scam your boss, and be lazy.
Lol bootlicker
exactly 😂
LOVE the shirt

Lmao, AI is like, open you eyes dude! Based

Sliders to adjust eye size and amount of "lock on" would be great

Stalker eyes..
so windows still laggz when u press control center 1:09
👍 fun thanks

razer 🤮
low tech presentation.
