btw that balao was out of battery. you can thank your lexington for that. the lexington's fighter planes that he dropped earlier (at 40:56) wasn't to defend you, it was there to keep the balao spotted. so the balao had to remain underwater to prevent getting spotted and blasted. the lexington did a really good job of bleeding the balao's battery dry (he drops a second fighter plane at 42:20). he kept tabs on the balao for a long time when the balao pushed up. unlucky for him you showed up right near the end of his battery. you can tell cause after you hit him and he dives he's only underwater for like 10-20ish seconds. which is about the max you can dive once your battery hits zero. you gain like 5'ish seconds on the balao once you surface and try to dive at zero battery (depends on which captain skills and modules you take). plus the 10 seconds before the crash surface thing forces you to surface.
Makes sense. I'm not sure the value of keeping him spotted when there weren't many of us around to do much with that information, but it did help, at least. It's interesting that my HUD indicates that the Balao still has plenty of battery, but perhaps that information isn't reliable. (I genuinely don't know why I should ever have any information on the status of an enemy sub's battery, but the HUD is trying to put it there.)
@@SeaRaptor i don't think the hud thing is accurate for battery. as for how useful it is, keeping a sub spotted is always useful they never want anyone to know where they are haha plus not having battery when you need it is deadly. but the montana on the east was also shooting him and sending asw on him when that cv kept him spotted. he had to come up to periscope a few times to shoot torps at the montana and the fighters kept him spotted whenever he popped up.

For certain destroyers it makes a lot of sense. For a ship like Shimakaze - that doesn't want to be spotted - it feels for me like the points are better spent elsewhere. If it works for you, though, I ain't gonna tell you you're wrong!
Hello searaptor, finally shima's video is out, awesome. I am just curious, which line are you going to teach us next? I have heard that Dutch cruisers have one of the best AA suites(especially from you) are you going to do that next? Thanks for being our teacher, teaching this line really appreciate it :)
I really want to do Italian DDs, but I need more experience at the top end of the line. So while I work on playing those ships more so I can speak intelligently about them, I'm going to run through British light cruisers.
Nice as always. If WG decides to give IJN torp choices like the Minegumo, I wonder which torps they would give the Shimakaze? The 8 km and 20 km or 8 km and 12 km? The Hayate is nicer to play now with smoke and TRB. I heard that WG is thinking of increasing the subs torp arming distance to make it easier to run them down with a DD. But is also thinking to increasing DD's detection range by aircraft to 4 km, which is heinous. Lord Montbatten mentioned that it looks like WG is going to hammer KOTS tournament. I don't keep up with it but I sounds like they are trying to grind/monetize it. I guess that will be a Twitch discussion.
I was disappointed in Mountbatten's video about KotS. We don't know enough yet to speculate on a lot of the things he was discussing. Unless War Gaming changed the upgrade options after you posted of this great teaching video, or I am doing something wrong. I am fairly new to the game and finally able to get this ship. The last option don't have "Torpedo Quick Reload System"
@@SeaRaptor Not the consumable booster. I'm referring to the mounting upgrade options. In the last slot, you were able to mount "Torpedo Quick Reload System", which decrease reloading torpedoes 25%. Good video. I spent most of my day on top of the post game leaderboard of LOSERS due to unfathomably poor play from others. I would say that I am the common denominator as logic dictates, but it's WOWS and logic is not allowed. We even spoke of the plan and they still did impulsive things and died. Even without hydro obvious, torps should be obvious. I dont think you could have given him a better smoke, unless American smoke. And thats just a bigger torp target.@@SeaRaptor
A fair swap if you think you'll get more use out of the guns. My counter-argument is that with Radio Location and your stealth, you should never blunder into another ship unless it's VERY early in a match. You should always have plenty of time to deliberately move into a gun engagement and get your turrets where you want them in plenty of time.
@@SeaRaptor true however with the current playerbase i find spoting/torping dds less capable of carrying thru torps and spoting only (imagine that radar mino you smoked , you depend on that guy killing an enemy dd for you or those 2 bbs on your flank shooting and hitting anything of value), so i tend to use guns in every single dd i can to win dd duels, plus i find kiting/juking slim shima one of the hardest dds to hit at.different playstyles that`s all, i ve just stopped relying on "teamates" to carry me, plus stealth these days is way overated(how did your stealth helped you vs plane spoting)

Dude like really no SE? Jesus :-D And why the hell priority target if you will not be spotted for most part of the game..and if you will what help will be to know how many players are aiming at you? You wanna gun open water or what? Players please don't go for the same build as this dude. Just get: PM, LS, SE, CE, AR, RL, FT, GtG - best build for shima you can get.
As explained, there are ways to get SE into the build, but it requires sacrifices. There's nothing wrong with it, and in competitive modes you'd be a fool not to take it. But for randoms - which is all this video is meant to address - you can get by without it if you play smart.
@@SeaRaptor Its very easy to just sacrifice faster torps and priority target for SE and GtG. PT is bullshit on shima and faster torps skill is ok but its really not needed. The few knots you will get will mostly make no difference. What makes difference is your torp aiming skill and bit of a luck. Lot of times in randoms I survived with just few k HP like 1-3k. Without SE I would be dead. Even if you are good player you will get demaged cos of radars, cvs, subs other shimas or DDs with lower spot. Also most used guide for wows "World of Warships captain builds" on google docs has SE in the guide. Good youtube players I watch: Flamu, Flambass, Trentlass, PQ have SE.
I'll acknowledge PT is probably a bad choice on something with this low a detection, though I do still like the skill. SE remains a good choice, there's nothing wrong with it. I simply don't consider it a must-have on this ship or Kagero. Admittedly, Kagero is best-in-bracket detection, so that's not precisely a fair comparison; Shima's detection is simply "very good" and only a handful of things out-spot her. Stealth radars are few, and with heads-up play Shima can usually avoid getting radared in randoms. I don't see 12km radar in every single game these days the way I once did; some games have no radar at all. GtG feels a bit wasted given how little her guns will likely get used, but with only 1 point left in the build I agree it's the best remaining option.
@@SeaRaptor You dont need PT cos you know when you are spotted in Shima everybody will shoot at you :D In theory, you don't need any skills, you can win the game even without a captain, although without CE it would probably be pretty hardcore. Radars are not that much of a problem, CV is far worse. Every HP you have is useful there. My friend plays Gearing quite aggressively (he has LM so spot like shima) and he often has very little HP left, but he can still torpedo a lot of ships, because AR works almost at maximum. Now several games in a row he ended up with +- 500hp and without SE he would be dead long ago. So for me it is a must have skill on every DD.
as a shima lover, you captured her pluses and minuses very well. definitely tougher these days but still a fun ship to play
