    I typically observe more eastern lolita fashion than western (from a western perspective). I'd say the Japanese lolita is typically more free form, and western lolita seems to be more based in coord rules. When I recently started observing western lolita more I found it weird that it's not viewed as free form as it is in Japan, since the style comes from there. I'm not part of any comms so I'm not sure how strict people are with coord rules. But, I'd say your style is more often casual lolita (based on your coords in your videos).

      I would say as the years go on I think most people in the western sphere for lolita have become a lot more lax on rules in comparison to what it was like ten years ago. I tend to wear "casual lolita" because I wear my coords out and about in daily life. I think a lot of what was popular in the west for lolita was not as functional for daily wear, and so the idea of "casual" lolita is born but clearly separated. OTT was so popular for a good ten years, but I would say lolita in the west has become a lot more casual and functional or at least accepting of those ideas recently. Especially since old school has become a bit more trendy in the last couple of years, people now commonly and openly wear blous-less jsk coords without fear of critique because it is just widely accepted (from what I've seen). Though, it was a lot "riskier" in 2012 if you were to call it lolita, you'd just be an ita. lol
      All to say yes I totally agree! I think the idea of having these rules vs the free form style is because people feel they want to "preserve" the fashion , especially since it does not originate in the west. However, I personally feel alternative style is meant to be expressive and have evolution. I think if you are worried about effecting any sense of preservation or infringing on something, it's probably best to generically call it inspired by j-fashion or kawaii fashion with lolita inspiration. Then maybe that won't be overstepping anything

      It's interesting with the way fashion has developed in the West v. Japan v. China. I know there are a lot of things that we wouldn't consider lolita in China, but they would or so many things that we wouldn't consider lolita, but it's fine in Japan and vice versa. The example that comes to mind is Bodyline (no idea how it's seen in China), but a lot of Japanese lolitas still don't like Bodyline and advise against it for new lolitas. But in the West, Bodyline is still seen as valid and there was also some debate on Japanese lolitas over whether Amavel should be considered lolita or not on Twitter as well. I think the consensus was that it's not, it's girly kei. I think there were more rules in the Western comms to preserve the style, which I get, but I wished that there had been more emphasis on saying that it's a good outfit but it's not lolita or something to that effect. I really like seeing lolita pieces in non-standard lolita outfits or at least in more creative ways over the cookie cutter ott sweet days. It really makes the prices of lolita worth it since you can wear it in diff ways than just lolita. I kinda feel like we're missing more basics that you can mix and match to get the very creative outfits you'd see in street snaps imo. I feel like we're returning to those days a bit which is really nice to see more solids and non-print options by AP & Baby.

      @@lilac_nites5256 I agree! Thanks for your input about the Twitter discussions overseas, it offers an interesting perspective! I can understand why Japanese Lolita’s wouldn’t consider Bodyline Lolita, tbh. After going to Bodyline in person, It seemed very clearly more a cosplay/costume shop than any fashion store/boutique. That’s not to say I won’t wear Bodyline still lol, but my perspective on it (at least from seeing it in modern day) has really changed my view! More just that I would probably never have seen Bodyline as a “Lolita brand” if i previously knew it how I had seen it in person. It’s very interesting!

      @@lilac_nites5256 I really like solids too. I also enjoy pieces that can be mixed into everyday wear. Personally I don't go for the oot sweet, but mostly wear more plain pieces that I can dress down or up. I really like brands like Sheglit, most of their stuff is really elegant and classic.

      @@PureRaee It's nice to see things loosen up, as far as rules/guidelines go. I've only been into Lolita fashion for 5 or so years, and most of what I wear I make myself. So I'm not always fully coordinated. But I'm ok with that. Most of what I hear/see of western Lolita is secondhand info since I'm not directly in any comms. So I may not be getting the whole image. But I'm glad that there's some lax on the rules.

    i live in nyc and while i've definitely seen many alternative fashion people here, lolita fashion in particular is something that a lot of people are still not really used to, so it can feel unpleasant and isolating to be outside wearing it (although it doesn't stop me..). i can imagine that in japan, while lolita fashion is not "normal," it's something that originated there, and has been documented and portrayed in the media for at least a couple decades now. so on top of the culture of keeping to oneself, it's also probably not as much of a culture shock to see it, which i think creates the calm atmosphere. i really wish i could experience that T_T

      I agree! I hope NYC becomes more used to it :) I've seen nyc lolitas online and the meetups look so fun! so hopefully someday soon you'll be able to experience the calm atmosphere at home

    I love your point of view regarding Lolita fashion and the rules! I always enjoyed things that were considered « odd » for the fashion but I would put my own twist to it! I think fashion is about being creative, confident and having fun! 😇🎀💞🌈🩷 Great video by the way, I love watching your content! 🥰🌸

    people in japan mind their own business most of the time i think !! i don't dress in full lolita but in some lolita inspired outfits and in france people would look at me all the time,, but not so much in london (where i live) ,, everywhere is different haha . loved your outfit in this video !!

      @@vampirebl4des good point! That’s so interesting in London people don’t tend to look. I guess because it is a bigger city with a more prominent alternative scene? I’ve never been but it seems to be the case? Interesting for sure! I’d love to go to London someday and experience this 🥰

      @@PureRaee yes london is great !! there is a pretty big alternate scene i'd say , especially in camden and brick lane but i see someone wearing alternate fashion almost every day !! one thing we're lacking is alt shops tho imo, there are only a few shops and they're mostly in camden and very expensive (online would usually be cheaper)

      @PureRaee  5 месяцев назад +1

      @@vampirebl4des Thank you for your reply! That is so cool to hear that you see someone wearing alt fashion nearly every day! I hope to get to experience it all first hand some day! ^^ And I know what you mean, obviously I don't live in a place that has a huge alt scene, but even when I lived in a larger city there still weren't many alt shops. I assume it's a lot cheaper for them to run online only nowadays. It's sad though because it's nice to see things in person and have a little community that shops in person. Hopefully someday in the future they will become more popular :)
