  • Sir Jeffrey Donaldson will succeed Edwin Poots as DUP leader. Can he fix Northern Ireland’s Brexit-related problems? Please subscribe HERE bit.ly/1rbfUog
Sir Jeffrey Donaldson's insisted the so-called Northern Ireland protocol, which allows Belfast a special place within both the EU and UK trading systems, will not continue in the current form - if at all.
Donaldson has also demanded to see action before he signs up a new power sharing arrangement with Sinn Fein.
On the hundredth anniversary of the opening of the Northern Ireland parliament, no-one can afford to see political stalemate.
    So what happens now?
Newsnight’s political editor Nick Watt reports. Emily Maitlis is joined by DUP chief whip in Westminster Sammy Wilson, chair of the Northern Ireland select committee Simon Hoare and Sinn Féin MP John Finucane.

Why should the EU make any more concessions to the UK? The British government needs to start the process of re registration of products that previously were EU passed, they're either too lazy or can't be arsed to do this. They should have started the process on the 1st January 2021 or perhaps the British government thinks rules don't apply to them. Why can't people understand its down to the British government to solve this problem, the DUP were instrumental in bringing about this particular form of Brexit with the support of May's deal for which they were handsomely paid. To be bitching now is useless and threatening to destabilise NI is like a child stamping their feet in a tantrum.

Jan 👍 You make reasonable and valid points in your post. However, with respect: The people of Northern Ireland aren't stomping their feet. It's the minority DUP, who are forever stomping their feet, throwing tantrums and creating controversies where they done exist. The N. Ireland "Protocol" has no bearing on, nor it is a threat to, the N. Ireland position within the UK. The people of N.Ireland--and Scotland-- democratically voted to stay in the EU. That result is completely ignored by the so called, "democratic"? Unionist Party. 😟

The DUP is like a battered spouse who won’t leave their abuser. The UK does not care for NI. Also NI diverts on a plethora of areas of law to that of Eng/Wales, e.g. criminal, land, evidence, environmental, equity, employment etc. So why care for divergence now? The majority of both communities in Northern Ireland have no interest in unification.
NI has been their home for over five generations they are fine with it and know the consequences (financial and political), and the chaos and violence it would re-ignite. They are the silent majority... .they just dont shout about it on social media....in fact the majority don't use social media at all...they have better things to do in their lives, with family, work,, finances and social life in the real world to be getting on with.

The DUP does indeed not understand one bit of the protocol. Just as the presenter said, NI has better access to the EU market as part of the protocol. NI can freely trade within the EU free market. The UK choose for England, Scotland and Wales not to be part of that market, and thus get the burden of the checks that are imposed to anyone outside it when the ship goods to it.

Lets talk trade, until the Great Depression in the 1930s, Northern Ireland ran an annual surplus, and was a net contributor to the UK exchequer. " Nine of the twelve UK statistical regions (the exceptions are London, South East England and East of England) carry a deficit. At nearly £5,000 per capita, Northern Ireland's is the highest, followed by a £4,300 per capita fiscal deficit in Wales and £4,100 in North East England. Although the absolute size of Northern Ireland's deficit has fallen slightly from £9.7 billion in 2016-17 to £9.4 billion in 2018-19, proportional to the size of the economy, the deficit was higher during the 2018-19 fiscal year than any year from 1970 to 2000"
