  • William Bouguereau (1825-1905) French academic painter. In his realistic genre paintings he used mythological themes, making modern interpretations of classical subjects, with an emphasis on the female human body.
During his life he enjoyed significant popularity in France and the United States, was given numerous official honors, and received top prices for his work.
As the quintessential salon painter of his generation, he was reviled by the Impressionist avant-garde. By the early twentieth century, Bouguereau and his art fell out of favor with the public, due in part to changing tastes. In the 1980s, a revival of interest in figure painting led to a rediscovery of Bouguereau and his work.
Throughout the course of his life, Bouguereau executed 822 known finished paintings, although the whereabouts of many are still unknown.
n his own time, Bouguereau was considered to be one of the greatest painters in the world by the academic art community, and simultaneously he was reviled by the avant-garde. He also gained wide fame in Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain, and in the United States, and commanded high prices.
His works often sold within days of completion. Some were viewed by international collectors and bought before work had even finished.
Bouguereau’s works were eagerly bought by American millionaires who considered him the most important French artist of that time. But even during his lifetime there was critical dissent in assessing his work; the art historian Richard Muther wrote in 1894 that Bouguereau was a man "destitute of artistic feeling but possessing a cultured taste reveals... in his feeble mawkishness, the fatal decline of the old schools of convention." In 1926, American art historian Frank Jewett Mather criticized the commercial intent of Bouguereau’s work, writing that the artist "multiplied vague, pink effigies of nymphs, occasionally draped them, when they became saints and madonnas, painted on the great scale that dominates an exhibition, and has had his reward. I am convinced that the nude of Bouguereau was prearranged to meet the ideals of a New York stockbroker of the black walnut generation." Bouguereau confessed in 1891 that the direction of his mature work was largely a response to the marketplace: "What do you expect, you have to follow public taste, and the public only buys what it likes. That's why, with time, I changed my way of painting."
After 1920, Bouguereau fell into disrepute, due in part to changing tastes.
Comparing his work to that of his Realist and Impressionist contemporaries, Kenneth Clark faulted Bouguereau’s painting for "lubricity", and characterized such Salon art as superficial, employing the "convention of smoothed-out form and waxen surface."
In 1974, the New York Cultural Center staged a show of Bouguereau's work partly as a curiosity, although curator Robert Isaacson had his eye on the long-term rehabilitation of Bouguereau's legacy and reputation.
In 1984, the Borghi Gallery hosted a commercial show of 23 oil paintings and one drawing. In the same year a major exhibition was organized by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in Canada. The exhibition opened at the Musée du Petit-Palais, in Paris, traveled to The Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, and concluded in Montréal. More recently, resurgence in the artist's popularity has been promoted by American collector Fred Ross, who owns a number of paintings by Bouguereau and features him on his website at Art Renewal Center
Since 1975 prices for Bouguereau's works have climbed steadily, with major paintings selling at high prices: $1,500,000 in 1998 for The Heart's Awakening, $2,600,000 in 1999 for The Motherland and Charity at auction in May 2000 for $3,500,000. Bouguereau's works are in many public collections.
Notre Dame des Anges ("Our Lady of the Angels") was last shown publicly in the United States at the World’s Columbian Exhibition in Chicago in 1893. In 2002 it was donated to the Daughters of Mary Mother of Our Savior, an order of nuns affiliated with Clarence Kelly's Traditionalist Catholic Society of St. Pius V. In 2009 the nuns sold it to an art dealer for $450,000, who was able to sell it for more than $2 million. Kelly was subsequently found guilty by an Albany, New York jury of defaming the dealer in remarks made in a television interview.

Totally agree with you. The flesh looks alive and if you reached out and touched it you would almost expect it to be warm and soft. Beautiful. I'm glad people are starting to appreciate this kind of work. For too long academic work was used as a kind of insult or criticism. I think it's wonderful. Can be appreciated for its skillful technique and craftsmanship.

It is beautiful, and every single person who sees it, loves it, my grandchildren fight over who will get to have it when I am gone. LOL!! I am pleased that I was able to introduce them to great art. ❤

A great painter, indeed, love all his fabulous beautiful paintings! He should have never had a falling out with the public over the years because there should be room for all styles of art/paintings! All art is subjective anyways! Am currently painting a copy of his beautiful painting "The Wave" though making minor changes so as to not copy it completely! I took two years of life drawing i.e. nudes at fashion/art school in NYC before becoming a professional fashion illustrator in Manhattan many moons ago, and am a fine art painter now. We had to learn anatomy, the bones and the muscles of the human body and how fabric falls on the body as well. My life drawing teacher was a master teacher from Italy where I went to study further! Thanks Master Painters! The Great Bouguereau, gone, but certainly not forgotten, thankfully!

@@masterpainters1706 I genuinely thought how this channel and the way you have presented each work, could actually bring joy, and complete immersion in such astounding beauty, to what I think is probably one of the cruelest conditions a person could experience. The most shimmering, magnificent silver lining on the darkest cloud.
Hospitals, nursing homes, hospices, any place where people are typically not experiencing much happiness and are probably incapacitated to some degree, Master Painters should be part of the doctors orders.

@Sonyonker Oh mate that's amazing. What a beautiful thing to say. I have just read your comments to my mom and I could see how moved she was. It was my mom who was my brothers carer for the 5 years he battled MND. So us getting a comment like yours really does have a deeply moving impact. I made the videos in a way that me and my mom would most enjoy watching them. I never imagined they would be seen by many people at all so it's been a constant surprise to me that so many people have watched them and enjoyed them enough to message me. It's been a real privilege for me to hear from every single person who has taken the time to contact me. But your message has really hit me. Such a wonderful compliment . It was my younger brother who died from MND, he was only 40 and we finally lost him 5 years ago. You have really made a difference to me and my mom by sending this message. So I want to say thank you once more and I hope we will speak again. X

I'm just blown away~! I've been an admirer of W. Bouguereau since I first saw his work at age 13. I aspire to reach, at least, a modicum of his expertise....it may never happen...but I will work at it. Thank you for this wonderful display of his work. (I wish the titles had been included.)

His paintings deserve no criticism! I take what critics say lightly and choose to maintain my own view.Critics sometimes possess a secret jealously. I can't help but wonder where the unaccountable paintings are....This calms me your dedication is noticed and appreciated thank you again

I also agree that everyone should be free to judge art. Besides, for Bouguereau, he was as much a victim of political ideology as of artistic ideology.
The critics of the time - subservient to the new impressionist movement - already reflected what is still relevant today: the ideology and the progressive and modernist dictatorship; with the added bonus of detesting anything that might refer to the old world, to the so-called "bourgeois" society as they say: its values, its traditions, education, religion, order, discipline, the taste for work well done, for difficulty, for effort; all things today that they say belong to the fascist and totalitarian past. ... ! ? Moreover, from a purely artistic point of view, would the critics - contemporaries of Guillaume Adolphe Bouguereau or Alexandre Cavanel - whose Birth of Venus was criticized with unprecedented virulence, have criticized with the same contempt the work of Sandro Botticelli and his Birth of Venus... ! However, same theme, almost similar composition and equal pictorial talent, from my point of view technically superior for Bouguereau: I do not believe it. We can see there, the bias of his critics of the time and to say the least, their lack of objectivity.

Thanks for the lovely message. As I've only just uploaded this video it is still being processed by RUclips so it is only running in low resolution. It usually takes an hour or so before the full 4k is available. I just wanted to give you a heads up so you can get the most out of viewing it. One of my favourite artists. I think his works look amazing in the full high resolution. I really hope you enjoy it. There is also an older video with this artists painting on the chanel. Thanks again and enjoy the video. Is something odd about this painter. Those cupids and littles girls. Wonder why he was so popular about the hight society. So hypocrat Victorian with double standards, church and sex. Same now nowadays, excepts that now they are the youngs models and photografers the new cupids and wings. And hollywood deep in selling same old staf, except this have a big dose violence and vulgarity.

    • @huberthanks3007
      @huberthanks3007 Год назад +2

Painting clothed little girls is a sin ? You wont find that as a problem iin the Bible. For example, Van Dycks painting of Charles I children completed centuries before is magnificent, as are many other child paintings shown in National Galleries. As for cupids, that are mythological beings. Sounds like you have an issue with children depicted in Art as purely sexual. It seems you are the odd, hypocritical, self righteous person here not Bouguereau. He was a talented, wonderful character artist.
