Does anyone know what's going on in the "feedback" section beginning at 23:20? I understand what feedback is but how are they controlling it and what does the drum have to do with it?
it's a transducer taped to the drum head and the performer is waving a mic around it. there's probably some processing in between but this is the feedback loop while the drum is functioning as a resonance chamber/filter. or, at least, this is my understanding of what's happening. pretty cool!
I'm actually wondering if whoever is hiding underneath the drum isn't loosening and tightening the tuning clamps, thereby changing the pitch? You can hear the feedback go in and out of pitch.
Another aspect in addition to tuning the clamps is the position of the microphone when recording drum vibrations. Different positions pick up different frequencies (Look up modes of vibration for a drum head: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vibrations_of_a_circular_membrane). I worked on a similar project creating a feedback loop with a guitar body
This piece is one of the most creative things I have seen in my entire life.

Actually i can now see clearly that that is indeed the case.
plus the bowed vibraphone is adding to the sound wash.
