Thank you so very much! 😊 I have no experience doing such a repair but with your advice everything works so well! My viewfinder is now cristal clear! 🥳 Best regards from Germany. Matthias
I know this video is a couple years old but I'm trying to find some advice on my QL17 G3. The screws that hold the knob on the focus ring backed out and the knob came off. There's basically two tiny screws sticking out of the focus ring now. I took it to a repairman and they said they've never been presented this problem before and told me it required a full refurb. Based on your experience how would you go about fixing this problem?
Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. Unfortunately the way the Canonet is put together the whole front lens assembly would need to be removed to put the screws back in that ring. It would be a very serious disassembly. Unfortunately a person who is qualified to do that repair will probably charge you $100 or more, which is probably about what the camera is worth. If the camera has sentimental value that might be an option you wanna explore. If it's just a fun camera you enjoy using and the focus ring still works perfectly but the knob is no longer attached I'd very carefully glue the knob to the ring and continue enjoying the camera. That being said if you decide to use glue you must be absolutely positive that no glue gets anywhere aside from the surface of the ring and the knob. It might even be safer to use something like a tiny piece of double sided adhesive that you could remove later if you wanted. If the focus ring itself is loose and not functioning properly all this would be pointless and you'd need to have it taken apart. If I can help any other way shoot me a message on Instagram @cult_of_the_canonet I've also got schematics and repair manuals if you wanna see how the focus ring attaches to the rest of the camera.
@@ontheflywithryan5611 thank you so much! I'll definitely be following you on Instagram for sure. Yeah it's kinda both a fun camera, and a sentimental piece. Thank you so much for your advice i really appreciate it
Hello sir, I accidentally touched the diagonal panel in the middle part of the viewfinder, now I can't see the light meter on the viewfinder clearly anymore, what can I do?
Hello! Any advice on how to fix connection to an external flash. I tried connecting mg flash through hot shoe and even through the sync cord, but it won't work. I have a Canonet QL17 GIII.
Shana I'm so sorry, I don't know how I missed this. If you're using any old flash the camera should just shoot with the hotshoe connection in manual mode as long as there are batteries in the camera. You can also use the flash guide numbers with the flash in manual. If you have a Canonlite D flash you can just use the camera in auto mode
I bought a QL19 that rattled, and found the second diagonal mirror (not the viewfinder splitter) freely moving about. It seems easy enough to reseat but I'm worried about the positioning ruining the rangefinder's accuracy. I assume it's dead center with the open square? Mine's got a slightly off-center window in the mirror
I've had to glue one back on before. Get in touch with me on @cult_of_the_canonet on Instagram and I'll send you a picture of where the mirror should be
I do have a question, I will attempt to clean and fix my grandpa's canonet. He always said that it fell once, and the view finder mirrors got misaligned, I have looked at it, but everything seems normal. Is it common to have that issue after a drop? Btw he does know what the focus is, but he says that sometimes he can't focus the viewfinder completely.
There are a lot of possibilities. Especially with older cameras sometimes the double image gets very hard to see. Dropping can definitely cause issues.
Brush it gently with a clean q tip and be careful not to put too much pressure on it. If that doesn't take care of it you can dip that q tip in water and try again then, just don't get too much water in there. As a last resort you could try rubbing alcohol with a high alcohol content because it will evaporate quicker, again, trying to use as little as possible. Unfortunately most of these cameras have seen better days and sometimes the improvements we can make to them without replacing parts is pretty small
Thank you for posting this video! Saved myself some Canonet models, that I was able to do fix myself with your help!
Glad to hear it!

Perfect video. I cleaned my viewfinder in less time than the video took to run! Well done sir.

So we're talking about the knob on the focus ring that you would use to move the focus ring around?
@@ontheflywithryan5611 yeah exactly! If you want to chat like on Facebook or something so i can show pictures id be okay with that

9:17 So is there any way to clean the diagonal glass without getting rid of the coating? Mine has specs all over it and I'd like to get rid of them

thanks for that video
👍👍 Hope it helps
Your right, the ql17 with a small 7, like the 5 on your Qi 25, is the same size. Where the numbers were the same size, the ql’s were smaller
What happens if I did clean the diagonal glass with alcohol?
Well, how does it look? As long as you didn't use too much or scrub too hard you might be ok.
Could I email you? I picked this up yesterday, I have a few questions haha

fair warning!! Dont accidentally close the back or you can’t get back into your camera
Lol, you'll have to thread the rewind knob a few turns. I've done that a few times.
