  • EVERY GAME IN THIS VIDEO IS FAKE.
Not all repros are created equally, and I wanted to take some time today to explain the differences between the types of repros/hacks/roms that are out there, and especially explain which ones I prefer over others (you might feel the same way after watching this).
I review the different types out there, and give a broad overview on verification, BUT verification and validation is something that every collector should learn. Don't rely on internet sources to tell you if a game is real or not! Learn the signs and steps!
I might do a full series on how to validate, but like I say in the video.... if those signs and clues are out in the wild, those evil fakers could use them to make better fakes!!
    Tools I used:
    3.8mm bit (Gamebit)
    Triwing screwdriver
As always, thanks for watching and I hope you guys find these informative and helpful!!

I see repros made to allow cheap alternatives fine, as long as they are clear they are not the real thing. That is usually the problem with most repros sold online.

I'm right there with you! Just differentiate the cart enough so it doesn't look real! Besides, I think the clear plastic Metroid looks way cooler! And won't trick anyone!

About that last topic, I had/have the 5 gen3 pokemon games I brought in 2011 or so, they were bootlegs(didnt know at the time but they were cheap at least). Summer of 2014 I played them a lot and Pokemon Sapphire and Leafgreen had those battery issues you mentioned. They would freeze randomly when saving, cant remember if they did at other times.
Was annoying losing sava data so that motivated me to seek out authentic carts/cib, and it's a good thing I did back then considering their prices now.
Edit: Oh yeah another thing, they couldn't link up with the Gamecube pokemon games either, and they didn't save after trading like they're supposed to. That was actual useful for cloning though, could give 6 legendary pokemon with rare items on each of them > trade for fodder to an authentic game > authentic game keeps them, turn off power on bootleg so that it keeps the legendarys and rare items.

It's a shame that the bootlegs work in nearly all ways expect saving or trading. Sure they might be a good alternative, but not always. Repro Earthbound audio is crazy bad though.

I had to call out a guy who "has been in the hobby over 20 years" auctioning off a bootleg Doom II GBA. Once it started reaching "real copy" money, I asked him for board pics. Even upon providing that, he hadn't yet clued in it wasn't authentic. I had to link him to a real one before he went "oh....". At least he promptly pulled it and apologized to the bidders. Same looking one that burned Metal Jesus.

I mean it happens! I was fooled by a Paper Mario 64 a while back, label looked good, cart looked right. But the board was all wrong. Everything else checked out, but those boards never lie!
But stores and professional resellers absolutely HAVE to do their due diligence to verify if they want to be taken seriously.

If there was a repro company that clearly printed "reproduction" on the label (replacing the Nintendo logo perhaps) and printed "reproduction" on the PCB, I'd be so into that.

Repos are selling for a ridiculous amount. I see people selling repo N64 games for $40 - $60 Canadian.

Right? And to think that some of them might be fake, we all have to spread awareness about repros and fakes. Not everyone is as connected and up to date on how to spot fakes and what to look for!

Wow that was the longest, annoying rant about repros and fakes ever… we just wanna see what makes it fake. Simple.

Hey do you have a discord or a social media I can message you on? I have been seeing a store claiming they're always verifying the quality of games and their authenticity and I wanted to know if they're a reliable source

Sure do! We have a cleaning and repair channel on the Gameye Discord and the HitSave discord! Restore and Replay is also on Instagram and Twitter too!
We're always down to verify games as well!
