Great video. I just did this repair myself last weekend. The gear that I replaced crumbled like a stale Oreo when I attempted to pull it out of the instrument panel. Your web site is the best. Keep up the great work.
We’ve done exactly what you’ve shown and no luck for our 1994 GT. Any other suggestions other than replace it. The tachometer and temp gauge works. Fuel gauge is 98% accurate.
Terrific solution. I've got 2 1995 Mustangs and both odometers & trip meters stopped turning. Your easy to follow instructions were spot-on, the worm gears on both clusters were busted and crumbled when I removed them just like in your video (1995 must have been a bad year for plastic parts). Replaced them with new worm gear sets I bought from LMR and everything now works perfectly on both 'Stangs! Thank you for the easy-to-follow solution.
Ordered the kit on Thursday, they said it would be here Monday, but it actually arrived on Saturday. Took the computer in the garage, fired up the how to video and in less than 15 minutes I had my wife's '98GT back together and working! You have two fans for life :) thank you!
MIke H Thanks that made my day. We do this to help fellow Mustang Enthusiasts. Glad we were able to help another future life-long LatemodelResto customer!
First off , I got the part the next day after paying , second it fixed my speedometer , third , my drive gear just fell apart when I touched it , Thanks guys I will be ordering more things from you:)
My 1996 Mustang worm gear had disintegrated into hundreds of pieces. 3rd Mustang (‘95, ‘96, ‘97) I’ve had with that problem. Your replacement gears and video were exactly the solution. Thank you.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. Your instructions walked me right thru replacing my odometer gear. Local Ford dealer quoted me $160 to do it. I was done in less that thirty minutes and one beer.
This video was a tremendous help. As a weekend shade tree mechanic (accountant by day) it took me just under an hour to complete the repair. I simply followed the video step-by-step. No problems. Thank you, LMR!
to me this was a great video. I didn't realize how easy this would be. I just ordered my parts and have already removed the odometer out the dash. Saved me almost $200 as this was the quote I was given to do the exact same thing you just showed. Thank you very much, really appreciate the video.
Thanks so much! I don't know too much about cars and don't own any tools which was a big dilemma after AAA told me it MUST be fixed to purchase a policy from them, and my mechanic quoted me $295 to fix the odometer. But after a little research and viewing this video I ordered the parts and my brother was able to lend me the tools. Because of you I was able to fix my own odometer on my '96 Stang and save a huge chunk of money in repairs and insurance!
I just changed out the odometer gears which had stopped working on my '96 Mustang. Your video was very helpful, very detailed & informative, thanks for providing it for us DIYs. The gear set had been broken for a few years so had to forward the odometer a little to make sense for AAA recordkeeping...it's pretty funny that you can find a boatload of videos on rewinding the odometer but not forwarding, LOL...I used my Dremel and buffing pad to carefully/slowly advance the readings to my goal mileage, thanks again.
I just replaced this gear on my 1998 Mustang convertible without any input from anyone else. Thanks for the excellent instructions. I'm a believer (subscriber).
Awesome tutorial. I dont know much about workung on my ford mustang . Thanks to you guys , now i can learn how to do the basic things to get my 98 mustang back to great condition. Basically just gotta tune up, fix the odometer and then it'll feel great to know how to. Thanks again.
Changed my gear set out, last night. The hardest part of the entire process was getting the headlight knob off. I finally got it to come off, but still not sure how it latches in place. :-) My big gear was eaten up. Plus, you weren't lying about how tight the fit is of the worm gear on the motor. LOL I should have changed out my dash bulbs while I was in there but didn't have any on hand. You might add that to a recommendation when people have that dash out. Thanks for the part, the free shipping and the speedy delivery. First class !!!
Incredible video. Appreciate you. Quick delivery on odometer gear part. Thank you. Problem solved. I do recommend replacing the instrument cluster bulbs while apart. 5 total - 194 T10 bulbs.
Just got my kit today and installed it, worm gear was toast so no mileage or trip miles. Whole end of other gear gone even though rest was somewhat there it was nasty. I found putting motor assembly back in had slop loose, so I used a bic lighter a few seconds at knuckle section and lightly press down for maybe 3-4 seconds. Worked like a charm real firm now.
Thank you for the video and the parts from LMR! Took me a bit longer than you because the old drive gear crumbled into dozens of tiny pieces (it was broken and stuck diagonally when I opened the thing). My mustang is 27 years old!
I like you man! Inspection was coming up and my Stang wont pass w/o a changed odo. I replaced my sensor in the trans and that didnt work. The dealership told me $300 for the parts and labor... I do everything myself. So for about $30.00 (s&h inc.) and 30 mins of my time (thanks to your vid) i'd say I'm a very happy customer.
Late Model Restoration I noticed you had the car on There a red light blinking by your lad on the video Wouldn’t disconnecting anything with battery on caused electrical issues? Was the key in the car ?? In what position
***** I have a question, my temp gauge only works sometimes. Does the temp gauge work with a similar gear, like for the odometer? If so, do you guys sell a replacement? Thanks so much.
+LADD HOOVER - I would imagine this would be so only if one *does* adjust the odometer. In fact, if the odo is left inoperative for any period of time, this must be disclosed at the time of sale or transfer.
Great direction, but not perfect. I give them a 95%. There is one thing missing: You have to be careful not to break the pegs that keep the speedometer and tachometer from going below zero. They are very fragile, so I recommend you pop them out, so you don't break them when you lay the gauges down on your bench to replace the gears. Other than this, it took me about an hour, because I had to run to the store to get some replacement bulbs. You can hook up just the housing to the ribbons and check your lights by turning the ignition key and putting on your lights.
Instead of popping out the pegs, I accomplished the same thing with a couple of strips of scrap wood and a shop towel. I lined up the strips with the flat parts of the gauges, covered the wood with a shop towel and set the faces on the towel. Worked perfectly.
Nice video...but I have a question for 2 yrs. I have had to tap the glass to get my speedometer to work in a 98 mustang. Well now the needle went all the way around and won't work now...I called the ford dealer and they no longer carry the part. They said I would have to send it out to get repaired and it would be 300 dollars...Could I repair this myself like you did too save me a whole lot of money...Speedometer cluster is what they told me...help please? And are they correct?
To test the motor you will need to have a good voltage meter to see if it is getting power. If so then you have a bad motor. These are no longer available new. Best bet is to find a new gauge from a salvage yard.
This would fix the odometer but sounds like you might be having an issue with the tachometer. When you are replacing the odometer gear check all the connections. Don't forget the odometer gear has a lifetime warranty from us!!
Great video with directions. I wasn't installing new overlays, but needed to do a minor repair today on the cluster. This video gave me the exact directions I needed for now and later. #ProjectDropTopBullitt
hey i have a 94 mustang and the gas gauge is quite not working. if i will it up it'll go to full but after that it won't be accurate of how much gas I have remaining in the vehicle. do you know what this problem might be?
Thanks so much, got the job done in about 10 minutes. Question though, who don't you monetize your videos so you can make some money from people watching them?
Thank you, great video! Two questions, should I have disconnected the battery prior to repair and I accidentally moved the fuel gauge, will it reset to correct level when reinstalled? SMH.
Did you have the car on ? I notice by your lap there’s a red light blinking Wouldn’t disconnecting the dash with battery plugging cause electrical issues?
Nice guide, everything went smooth, I got all the parts replaced - I can manually spin the gears with my fingers and make the odometer move up or down in miles...But when I put it back together and start driving, nothing moves, any ideas?
I did this whole process. While the cluster was out, I swapped out to LED bulbs and replaced the temp gauge/gas gauge with NOS unit as well as the gas tank slosh module. I also replaced gears as they were disintegrated like ashes. Everything worked fine except the odometer gear fix. I am wondering if the odometer motor has gone bad, I am having a hard time finding a replacement motor. Could there be something else I missed?
Question my 1998 mustang is having issues my speed gauge is working and my rpm one works on and off but all the others are stuck in place and don't move if car is on or off any clue what this could be?
Everything you said is spot on the only thing was when you pull out the motor you risk breaking the clips that hold the motor down. Another thing you dont talk about is the orientation of the gear. So called the wormed gear. What do you do if you break the clips they are plastic. Lol
So I just replaced the gear for the odometer. And the pin keeping the speedo from moving all the way past broke. Do I need to replace the panel or if I glue the pin back together will my speedometer start working again?
Should've shown a quick replacement of the headlight knob, headlight switch, and headlight switch connector. The connector of course would take just a little extra time. I just checked my Headlight Switch Connector and it needs to be replaced so I'll be ordering that soon.
I took everything off and got to the worm gear and driven gear but they look to be in working condition. Could it be the motor since It isn't the gears? Please drop some knowledge and help me out. Thanks
just bought a 98 Mustang with only 98k.... was super hyped about the low miles until i realized driving home like 30 miles its the same mileage as when i bought the car.... slightly deflated on the deal now.... still a good running and looking car.... just wonder how long its been broken.... car dealers dream right there.... only a $25 dollar fix.... but no idea how many miles the car actually has
@@latemodelrestoration yeah.... Same thing I thought.... Can't say it looks or runs like a car with 200,000-300,000 miles.... Doing some investigating maybe with carfax to find the last reported time where mileage was different.... But the price I got it for even 200k or so still a decent price.
Great video, I have the gears and will attempt today. My temp gauge is dead though. I have replaced the temp sensors (both) on the motor but its still dead. All other gauges work fine. What could be the problem with the temp?
Jay did you get your temp gauge fixed? Did you try grounding out your temp sending unit wire to see if it spikes the temp gauge? Mine is kind of dead, every once in a while it works. I noticed something, that when I start the car, the temp gauge actually goes slight lower, very slight.
I got it fixed. I replaced the gauge with a NOS unit I found, at first it didnt work. I then swapped out the sensor on the intake with a new unit of LMR and it worked like a charm!
These are designed to fit 1994-1998 Mustangs. Any other application is not recommended by LMR, but you may check the Cougar forums for an applicable solution.
I need help I own a 86 mustang gr and ny speedometer is not working I changed my Speedo gear cable vehicle speed sensor and it still won't work it only starts marking after I'm going about 20 or so but it way off please help!!
Jason - Great question. Check with your local DMV office for the laws and regulations on odometers. Unfortunately, we can't tell you how to modify an odometer. -Landan

@@latemodelrestoration Thankyou for even taking the time to respond brother ! I figured it out , I guess the magnetic teeth strips on the back of the cluster ( one of them was overlapping on another ) causing it not to read when being plugged in !
Here is the link for the speedometer calculator. Fill this out and it will give you the correct gear size you need. lmr.com/products/Mustang-Speedometer-Gear-Calculator
We replaced the speed sensor and the connector and the speedometer still does not work. It sometimes will work and then the needle will bounce and go back to zero. Will these gears fix the problem?
Does this fix the speedometer as well? I have a 97 Cobra SVT and the speedometer, odometer and trip meter aren't working at all. All the other displays work fine.
No speed correction gears are referred to as speedometer gears. Head over to our youtube channel and search speedometer gears. We have a great calculator tool to ensure you get the correct gears for your Mustang!
If you are still taking comments and questions, I have a dilly. 1995 Mustang Gt with the 5.0 / 5 speed standard, and problems with the RPM guage. If the rev's hit over 3500, the quage quits, and actually tries working in reverse! Crazy, hey? Now, if the engine is over revved again, especially before its completely warmed up, the stupid thing sometimes reverses again, and although sticky, will work until and if there is another incident. I have even asked at the Ford garage, and not recieved a satisfactory answer as to what the problem is, and how to fix. Thinking it may require the Instrument Cluster to be replaced, but would certainly appreciate your input.
Great video. I just did this repair myself last weekend. The gear that I replaced crumbled like a stale Oreo when I attempted to pull it out of the instrument panel. Your web site is the best. Keep up the great work.

Wow, do people really pay those prices? For $275 you can buy two instrument clusters. Or even just a new speedometer gauge.

We’ve done exactly what you’ve shown and no luck for our 1994 GT. Any other suggestions other than replace it. The tachometer and temp gauge works. Fuel gauge is 98% accurate.

No sir, these gears just restore function to the odometer. To correct for speedometer, you'd need either a speedometer driven gear, or an LRS-Speedcal
Very helpful video and very detailed on what tools and steps thank you guys!!!
To test the motor you will need to have a good voltage meter to see if it is getting power. If so then you have a bad motor. These are no longer available new. Best bet is to find a new gauge from a salvage yard.

Working on a 98 gt. The odometer and trip work perfectly but the speedometer only works if you smack the dashboard. Any thoughts as to whats broken?
Thank you your video allowed me to do this without having to bring it anywhere if I could do it anyone can
Great video! I had to replace the entire cluster in my car, is there a way I can adjust the odometer to have the correct mileage for my car? Thanks

@@latemodelrestoration Thankyou for even taking the time to respond brother ! I figured it out , I guess the magnetic teeth strips on the back of the cluster ( one of them was overlapping on another ) causing it not to read when being plugged in !
@@trevorellis8472 You're welcome! Glad you found the problem. -Landan
Is this what I would do to change the speedo gear if I have a 373 or 410 rear?
Here is the link for the speedometer calculator. Fill this out and it will give you the correct gear size you need. lmr.com/products/Mustang-Speedometer-Gear-Calculator
We replaced the speed sensor and the connector and the speedometer still does not work. It sometimes will work and then the needle will bounce and go back to zero. Will these gears fix the problem?
where can i get the white face gauges that are in this car? i have seen many cheapo versions. what is the part # ?????
Once you fix the odometer will the mileage update itself? Is it stored on the ECU?
No. The mileage will not update whenever the gears are fixed. Odometer information is not stored in the ECU. -Landan
@@latemodelrestoration ok thanks
Did you Disconnect battery ...
your video and part made fix super easy and fast
Does this fix the speedometer as well? I have a 97 Cobra SVT and the speedometer, odometer and trip meter aren't working at all. All the other displays work fine.
Is the process the same if I were needing to fix the odometer gears on a 94 Thunderbird?
I'm wondering the same
No need to grease the gears?
Is it me or would you do some slight driving without putting mileage on the car
Thinking it may require the Instrument Cluster to be replaced, but would certainly appreciate your input.
fisheatsleep1 Is it just the RPM gauge having issues or is it others as well? -Landan
What if the gas gauge and temp gauge dont work as well as the odometer
Would this be the same for a 97 f150?
