Congratulations!!! I’ve been subscribed to you since your early PhD days when I was a Freshman in high school, and now I’m a High School English teacher teaching 10th grade American Literature and 11th grade IB World Literature! High school is a magical place, and I’m glad that you’re embarking on this journey. It’ll be cool to see you in a similar but fairly different world (I’m a public school teacher). You’ve inspired me to consider my passion for the humanities and for Africana Studies but have done a great job of exposing folks to the realities of the job market/working situation. I’m sending you all of the best wishes and am super excited for this journey!!

Thank you so much!! I’m excited and really need tips from you lol. Actually it’s a public school as well! Just a super unique one in the set up.

Congrats! And your hair looks great! Unfortunately, many HBCUs don't have an AFAM department. I do think the fight for those depts is worth it, but it's been a looonnnnng fight. AFAM was a minor and under the English dept. at mine. I think it's now something totally different (but not a major course of study). I think many HBCUs are missing out on a whole lot of scholarship because of that.
I was a public school teacher prior to pursuing doctoral studies. I applied pretty much stating that I wasn't looking to do academia (at most I'd do adjunct). I've recently been coming to terms with returning to the schoolhouse afterwards (or even during once I become ABD). Irecently got my teaching license transferred and am glad I have that option.

Congrats! I have been following you since you began your PhD journey. I too have completed my PhD program and have NO desire to obtain a tenure track position. Soo glad you were able to find an alternative path that align with your expertise! God speed and continued success with your endeavors!

Dr. Harper, I am so proud of you yet again. Congratulations on your new position. Sounds like a wonderful opportunity and a perfect fit for you. I’m so glad you spoke about the academic job market and the challenges Black women face. I’m thankful to be in a tenure-track position (3/3 load) but I had to be so intentional throughout the process. Thank you for sharing your experience. I always love hearing your voice. ❤️

Video came right on time for me! I’m getting ready to defend my proposal in the fall and the job market thoughts have been in my mind recently. Right now, I’m hoping to do tenure track but with my degree, I know that I have different possibilities. Congrats on the new job! I’m from the area so I’ve heard good things about that school!

Hey Dr. Harper, where did you find the postings for those jobs and what words did you use to search for those kind of jobs? I just graduated in May with my MA in Latin American/Caribbean Studies and my BA is in Africana Studies. I'm looking to find jobs related to those fields without going through the same things that you discussed with the unwanted diversity work.
