This is another one of those videos I have long wanted to make. India has such an incredible modern history. But is its reputation as the world's largest democracy really now at risk, as some suggest? Or are fears that Modi is becoming dangerously authoritarian overblown? If so, how should we regard Modi? As always, I look forward to hearing your thoughts and comments below.
@@karankapoor2701 Well no. Trump isn't in jail and most likely he never will. The most Trump will get is a fine because he's still on the ballot after the Supreme Court rules against keeping him off the ballot. What makes anyone an autocrat is taking unfair measures to ensure that opposition rule are difficult or ineffective.

autocrat meaning: 1. a ruler with absolute power; dictator; despot. 2. anyone having unlimited power over others. How is Modi an autocrat when his every decision is challenged in Supreme Court despite having a clear majority? What does autocrat mean to you professor?
@@karankapoor2701 No. In the US the 3 branches of government are separate, and Biden has no say in the trial, and Trump did try to overthrow the government with foreign and domestic help twice. If the US was like India, Biden would use government money to buy up all major corporations and medias, use the military to indimidate republicans, and cut down civilian groups. I live in Hungary so I saw how it isa ctually done, and Indians should be worried and set up counterpoles against Modi, both civilian and political.

Again, the context of the Ayodhya temple is left out, either by accident or intentionally. The site where the "mosque once stood" is generally accepted by most Hindus to be the one of the most important sites in Hinduism, as the birthplace of the important deity Rama, and this belief predates the mosque and there is significant evidence to this end. To be clear, nobody is condoning the manner in which the mosque was destroyed or the accompanying violence, but the mosque wasn't just demolished to harass Muslims as is (maybe not deliberately) suggested, as most ordinary Hindus believe this was an ancient pilgrimage site and it is not controversial at all among the Hindu community, but rather suggesting that Hindu beliefs are less important than other faiths definitely is. This shows a clear lack of respect for Hindu beliefs, almost suggesting that Hindus made up the belief that Rama was born there. The Ayodhya dispute is not about Islamophobia, just like the church at Jesus' prophesied birthplace is not Islamophobic. And yes, the mosque that "once stood there" was deliberately built at that site and was thus, called the Masjid-i-Janmasthan (or Mosque at the Birthplace). I apologize if this comes across as too rude, but I feel it is important to point out these things because if not clarified, it can lead to further misunderstanding about the general Hindu public (because most Hindus do support the temple but not due to religious hatred against Muslims).
# The Ayodhya Temple Dispute: A Landmark Supreme Court Verdict ## Abstract The Ayodhya temple dispute, a longstanding legal battle, culminated in a historic judgment by the Supreme Court of India on November 9, 2019. This essay provides an overview of the context, legal proceedings, and implications of the court's decision, which allocated the disputed land for the construction of a Hindu temple and provided an alternative site for a mosque. ## Introduction The Ayodhya dispute revolves around a piece of land in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, which holds immense religious significance for both Hindus and Muslims. The contentious issue has been a subject of intense debate, legal battles, and communal tensions for decades. The Supreme Court's verdict sought to address the ownership claims and pave the way for a resolution. ## Background 1. **Historical Context**: - Ayodhya is believed to be the birthplace of Lord Rama, a revered deity in Hinduism. The Babri Masjid, constructed in the 16th century, stood on the disputed site. However, historical records indicate that a Ram Mandir (temple) existed at the same location before the mosque was built. - The demolition of the Ram Mandir in 1528 and the subsequent construction of the Babri Masjid marked the beginning of the dispute. 2. **Allahabad High Court Verdict (2010)**: - The Allahabad High Court pronounced its judgment on September 30, 2010. The three-judge bench ruled that the 2.77 acres of Ayodhya land should be divided into three parts: - One-third to the deity Ram Lalla (represented by the Hindu Mahasabha). - One-third to the Uttar Pradesh Sunni Central Waqf Board. - One-third to the Nirmohi Akhara. - The court affirmed that the disputed land was indeed the birthplace of Lord Rama and that the Babri Masjid was constructed after demolishing a pre-existing Hindu temple. ## The Supreme Court Verdict (2019) 1. **Allocation of Land**: - The Supreme Court ordered the entire disputed land (2.77 acres) to be handed over to a trust (to be created by the Indian government) for the construction of the Ram Janmabhoomi temple. - Simultaneously, the court directed the government to allocate an alternative 5 acres of land to the Uttar Pradesh Sunni Central Waqf Board at another suitable location within Ayodhya for the construction of a mosque. 2. **Basis for Decision**: - The court considered evidence of continuous worship by Hindus at the disputed structure. The Hindu parties presented stronger evidence in this regard. - The Sunni Waqf Board failed to establish ownership through adverse possession or waqf (endowment). 3. **Implications**: - The judgment settled the long-standing dispute, allowing for the construction of the Ram temple. - It aimed to balance the interests of both communities by providing an alternative site for the mosque. ## Conclusion The Supreme Court's decision in the Ayodhya temple dispute marked a significant moment in India's legal history. While it resolved a contentious issue, it also underscored the need for communal harmony and respect for diverse religious sentiments. The allocation of land for both the temple and the mosque reflects the court's attempt to strike a delicate balance between faith and justice²³⁴. For the first thirty years of Indian independence, India had a complete dominance at the hands of the Congress party. After that, the congress violently tried to cling on to that power, sometimes succeeding, sometimes failing, till it collapsed in the 1990s. From 1991 to 2014 we had real multi party democracy and a somewhat even playing field between different parties, an opposition party that had actual teeth. Now we are reverting to the original system of guided democracy, but with an entirely different party at the helm, with a dramatically different set of values.

Ayodhya Lord Ram's temple is akin to Mecca/Vatican for Hindus. Under Islamic rule, to subjugate the local inhabitants, the Islamic invaders demolished several prominent temples, monasteries (Somnath, Markand Surya temple, Adinath, Kashi Vishwanath, Nalanda complex, etc ) and forcibly built mosques over it to assert dominance. It's not even a Hindu nationalist issue, it was more of a Confederate statue (Babri mosque) being brought down to reinstate the rightful deity back in his abode.
It's a trend the world over, nationalism is growing, in India it's religious nationalism, the need to revive and have Hinduism as the sole preferable state religion.. India is lucky in that this is mostly isolated to Northen India, whereas South India is more educated and forward thinking. The risk for India is when religion starts to get in bed with politicians and dictates aspects of policy, then you risk becoming Pakistan, which as a Pakistani I can tell you, it's not a good place to be. Obviously at the moment there are elections going on, more is put on for a show and some of the hype will go down after the election, or BJP can double down on this rhetoric, it will remain to be seen.

South has not faced Islamic invasions like the North did. South never experienced partition like the North did. Different Societal experiences build different societal behavior. And the South (and East) of India is able to resist BJP, not because they are "educated", but because of having a separate linguistic identity. And anyone who says BJP wins elections because of Hindutva politics is not very informed about Indian politics, which imo is not easy to understand.

# The Resounding Achievements of the Modi Government: A Comprehensive Analysis ## Abstract The tenure of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been marked by significant policy reforms, economic transformations, and assertive leadership on the global stage. This essay examines the achievements of the Modi government, emphasizing their impact on India's socio-economic landscape. From tax reforms to pandemic management, the government's actions have left an indelible mark on the nation. ## Introduction India, as a vibrant democracy, has witnessed dynamic shifts in governance over the years. The Modi government, which assumed office in 2014, embarked on a transformative journey, aiming to address critical challenges and propel the nation toward progress. In this essay, we delve into the resounding achievements of the Modi administration, highlighting key areas of impact. ## Tax Reforms and Demonetization The Goods and Services Tax (GST) reform stands as a watershed moment in India's tax history. Before its implementation, the country grappled with a complex and inefficient tax system. Prime Minister Modi's decisive leadership led to the adoption of GST, streamlining tax administration and promoting economic growth. Additionally, the bold move of demonetization-replacing high-denomination currency notes-aimed at curbing black money circulation and formalizing the economy. ## Make in India Initiative The "Make in India" campaign sought to transform India into a global manufacturing hub. Its impact has been palpable-exports have surged, and the nation has gained technological prowess. Notably, the defense sector witnessed a paradigm shift-from reliance on foreign imports to indigenous production of defense equipment. India's self-reliance in defense manufacturing has bolstered national security. ## Effective Handling of the COVID-19 Pandemic The COVID-19 pandemic posed unprecedented challenges globally. India, with its vast population and diverse healthcare infrastructure, faced immense pressure. However, the Modi government's response was commendable. Despite initial skepticism, India managed the crisis adeptly, outperforming even some developed nations. The leadership's focus on healthcare infrastructure, vaccination drives, and public awareness campaigns played a pivotal role. ## Strengthening India's Position on the Global Stage Prime Minister Modi's assertive foreign policy has elevated India's standing internationally. His unwavering commitment to national security, strategic partnerships, and regional stability has been evident. Whether addressing border tensions or advocating for India's interests in multilateral forums, the government has consistently projected India as a responsible global player. ## Economic Transformation India's economic trajectory shifted significantly during Modi's tenure. From being part of the "Fragile 5" economies, India now ranks as the fifth-largest economy globally. The sustained growth, despite occasional setbacks due to reforms like demonetization and GST, underscores the government's economic acumen. Inflation control measures have also contributed to macroeconomic stability. ## Expanding Political Footprint The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), under Modi's leadership, expanded its political footprint across states and union territories. From governing seven states in 2014, the BJP now holds power in 15 states and union territories, including politically crucial regions. This electoral success reflects the party's organizational strength and resonates with voters. ## Social Welfare Programs Initiatives such as the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), Jan Dhan Yojana, and Ujjwala Yojana have directly impacted citizens' lives. These programs prioritize inclusive development, addressing housing, financial inclusion, and clean cooking fuel availability. The government's commitment to social welfare underscores its pro-people approach. ## Conclusion While a robust opposition is essential for a healthy democracy, voters must critically evaluate promises and responsibilities. The Modi government's achievements resonate as a testament to their transformative vision for India's progress. As the nation navigates future challenges, these accomplishments serve as guiding beacons, shaping India's destiny on the global stage.

There's a slight inaccuracy regarding the Citizenship act you mentioned. The CAA law was enacted to address the refugees crisis, to aid those who have fled the neighbouring Islamic nations (Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh) because of extreme religious persecution. Obviously muslims from any nation can become an Indian citizen through the normal route.

After watching the video, I think your heart is in the right place (I hope) but your unintended bias comes from the sources you use. Ex. The western media like the BBC and even the likes of Al Jazeera have always held a negative view of India. A few key points would have given your video more context. Therefore, as a first time viewer of your channel, I implore you to dig deeper and give a more complete picture to your viewers. You should put your great narrative skills to good use. 1. There is much more history to the Babri masjid demolition case. Babur was an invader who killed and raped millions of people. The vast majority of people do not subscribe to his ideology. The mosque was built by razing down an important Hindu temple as a show of domination and disrespect. 2. CAA: The neighbouring Muslim majority (And even constitutionally Islamic) countries have a record of persecuting it's minorities. There is no other place for these persecuted Hindus, christians, parsis, jains etc to go except for India. The act is a ONE TIME grant of citizenship to all the minorities who applied for Indian citizenship before 2013. Everyone (Including muslims) can still apply for citizenship the normal way. 3. You have mentioned that PM Modi's governance style is popular among the masses. The reason being: he does good work and isn't corrupt, unlike the current opposition. Just because a leader is leading well and getting people's vote doest make him an Autocrat. That is a fairly negative term to use in my opinion. An autocrat has absolute power and they want the people to obey them without question or hearing their opinion. If you do even a bit of research, you will come to understand how close PM Modi is to the actual people on the ground. He actually listens to what they need and understands their pain because he himself has come from a very poor background. And a huge chunk, of the subsidies and welfare schemes have benefited the Muslim community, disproportionately higher than their population. Multidimensional poverty has come down from 30% to 11%! 4. Stripping of J&K's special status: The vast majority of Muslim population did not oppose the abrogation of article 370, as you incorrectly claim in your video. It was only opposed by a few elite muslim leaders who were looking after their own interests. Even going so far as to claim that the act would cause rivers of blood to flow. Despite their fear-mongering, the govt went along with it and the result is that the entire state's GDP has doubled and the people have MORE FREEDOM than before. You can watch numerous videos on youtube where the locals thank the central govt for its bold actions and bringing peace and stability to the region which experienced terrorism, unemployment and numerous other ghastly conditions. I trust that if you have the heart to get to the actual truth, you will find that what I have written actually corroborates to reality. You have earned a temporary subscriber! Let's see how it goes 🙃
Thank you. :-) As I always say, I make my videos for a general audience hoping to get a quick understanding of an issue. I don’t see them as the last word on an issue. Instead, I hope they can be a good starting point for someone who would like to go and learn more. It’s impossible to cover this topic fully in any 10-15 minute video. There are entire university courses to Indian history and politics. There have been growing comments about India’s political direction and so I hope to put these discussions in a readily accessible broader context. Obviously, there will be all sorts of elements that people would like to have seen expanded, but I hope I provided a broadly fair look at the question. In any case, I hope you enjoy the channel. I do try to cover a diverse range of topics.
@@JamesKerLindsay Your interest in India's political direction is welcome. However, I will contest your claim that PM Modi is "undoubtably autocratic". Comparing him to Erdogan isn't something a majority of Indians would appreciate... I invite you to consider the possibility of him being a Democratic populist. Bugaric 2019 is a good read. Cheers!
All of this is nonsense btw. Babri Masjid's archeological survey was highly controversial and vague, in contrast to places like Kashi Vishwanath that was historically recorded to be destroyed by Aurangzeb, so most Hindutvadis just argued that it was Ram's Birthplace because of popular folklore And the part about GDP is also not true. Not different from China, the Modi admin obscured data from non-formal non-agriculture businesses to obscure the collapse and immiseration of urban migrant workers in India. Actually reliable criterion for poverty like the Tendulkar committee's recommendation on lumpsum prices of essential goods are often ignored

I just want to say as an Indian, very balanced video Professor. I am neither pro BJP nor anti BJP. Similarly I am neither pro Congress nor anti Congress. From a bigger picture and long term point of view, while BJP has done exceptionally well for our economy and international relations, for our country to do really well in a democracy in the long term we really need a strong opposition that challenges the ruling party to get the best out of themselves. Ultimately, the country will benefit from that. If we end up having a party like Congress that ruled us for 40-50 years or BJP that is setting things in motion for another 20-30 years of dominance, in the long term we may not end up being a developed country. Checks and balances should be seen as a positive rather than an obstacle that needs to be destroyed. With a weakened and destroyed opposition which Congress did to other parties back in the past and which BJP is also doing now, we will destroy our pillars of democracy which is not good in the long run if we want to become a developed country.
A democrazy world One suffering from mass shooting and other one from mass rape and harrashment cases. Democracy never save your culture or bring welfare but leads towards vote Bank politics.
Thank you so much for the comment. I know many of your compatriots haven’t liked it, but they seem to have simply objected to the fact that the question could even have been asked; without even bothering to wait to hear the answer. But it seems like there are real concerns mounting about the style of government, even if the results of that government are impressive. I completely agree that a successful democracy is also part of the broader success of the country. The problem with the argument from some that India is doing well and so it should look the other way to democratic backsliding is what happens when it isn’t doing so well?
@@JamesKerLindsay not to mention that Congress keeps shooting at its own foot by continuing to prop up the Gandhi nepotistic dynasty rather than introduce some meritocracy in its ranks. But for the sake of the argument we are a country with 1.4 billion diverse people with multiple languages, religions, cultural identities, ethnicities., with millions of diverse world-views We need to strike the right balance between democracy and authority. If there is too much democracy then there will so many leaders just debating and bickering about and ultimately nothing gets done and no progress is made. If there is too much authority then it will erode on freedoms. India is probably the most challenging country to be governed. Till now as a nation we have done very well to somehow thrive. It will be interesting to see how our future holds.
Thanks. I completely agree. I’ve worked on politics long enough to know that democracy needs to be flexible to meet the demands of a particular political and social context. But there are certain underlying features of a democratic system - such as a truly free press and judiciary - that matter. When these come under attack, or feel the need to self censor heavily, then there are problem. But this is something we are seeing in a lot of countries. In any case, thanks for the interesting comments. I really appreciate it.
You spoke well, but I disagree with your one argument that BJP doing same thing like Congress to remain power for 30 years. Please tell one example that bjp did undemocratic activity during last 10 years? How much state got presidential rule? There are many Journalists in india doing extremely rough criticize to Modiji day and night, but who are falsely arrested? Which State election was rigging by BJP? Corrupted Opposition leaders are freely moving around in BAIL... So don't be mislead by Dengerous Western Abrahamic HIPOCRITE anti Hindu media. The title is provocative, but this video is an excellent summary of India's recent political history. Non-Indians should find this video very informative. Though I disagree with a few things: 1) Collapse of the soviet union was a victory of liberal-capitalism over communism, and not of liberal-democracy over communism. The liberal west went overboard with its support of its illiberal dictatorial allies after this event, ex. Pakistan/Saudis in India's neighborhood, and India a socialist democracy lost an important international ally. 2) The ratings agencies (for press-freedom, democracy etc) are all based in latitudes north of 48 degrees, NATO ally countries, their surveys are not opaque, methodologically poor and consistently produce absurd results such as Qatar having greater press-freedom than India. Makes these ratings/indices an invalid point for criticism of Modi. 3) Showing Rathee and the Guardian journalist as representative of main critics of Modi is a dis-service to those that politically oppose him. I have never seen these "international" (western, NATO) journalist in India put in the effort to learn and speak a local language and try and engage with the vernacular speaking population, as to why they vote for Modi or anyone else. Therefore they fall prey to English old-elite interest groups and form a skewed picture to the world.
Indias democracy is miles ahead of china, pakistan, turkey and dare i say the united states which only has 2 political parties. Show me one single nation with over a billion in population, with over 2000 ethnic groups , over a dozen religions, over 700 laguages and dialects that is cohesive as india. Im not saying there arent issues but compared to perhaps all others there weren't the pogroms , ethnic cleansing and genocides that were witnessed in far smaller countries. It irks many that those who criticise indias democracey were the very same who supported dictatorships around the world. Does anyone remember haiti, chile and the Philippines with their dictatorships? Who supported them? Who supported apartheid in south africa ? The very same who voice concerns in india when there really arent any comparisons. Im actually more concerned with you tube censorship and the fact they cant count in florida than indias social tensions. India isnt perfect nor their start to nationhood but compared to many they havent done too badly all things considered. Imo india can teach many emerging and existing states on how to create solid democratic and functioning foundations.
No one is criticizing Indian Democracy bro. The main concern is that it's actually dying in the hands of the BJP. They're blocking every other party using their Power as the Central Government. It's not a criticism of the BJP itself but a prediction of their rule resulting in a Dictatorship. Don't be surprised if Modi becomes a Dictator and India becomes exclusively Hindu.
Whats so "solid" about India's democracy and its functioning foundations? I wasn't aware it was much different than any other country's governance forms
No, foreigners regard Midi with suspicion because of his authoritarian tendencies. Foreigners don’t like Modi’s supporters because many of them are deeply unpleasant conspiracy theorists who engage in pile ons when anyone dares to question their leader’s activities.
@@JamesKerLindsay Have you read Salvatore Babones' work on Indian democracy? Please read his articles and watch his videos. He is writing a book on Indian democracy. And no non Indian publisher is willing to publish it in the world. Only one or two Indian publishers will even consider publishing it. And we all know why this is. Have you read "Snakes in the Ganga" by Rajiv Malhotra? The forward was written by Peter Boghossian. It discusses the woke attack on the USA, India and other liberal free democracies. India is attacked because of the global woke culturally marxist Frankfurt school memoplex and prism. Why do you assume PM Modi is autocratic? Isn't it more accurate to say that PM Modi generally backs down whenever his proposals gets significant domestic opposition? For example he backed down on the farm laws even though they would greatly benefit most farmers and were popular among most farmers. PM Modi perhaps didn't want protestors from Punjab (and to a lesser degree Haryana) illegally blocking the highways, roads and major governmental and commercial buildings in Delhi in infinitum. [They had already been illegally blocked and occupied for a year.] Plus many police were being sent to the hospital by protestors. And Indian police are very soft and refuse to protect themselves. Modi backed down even though his farm bills were generally popular with most Indians. PM Modi generally changes his bills to avoid confrontation with the supreme court. The same supreme court that blocks much of his legislative agenda. PM Modi has also tried to slow implementation of the Indian Supreme Court order for NRC because Modi dislike controversy. In general PM Modi backs down when opposed. And is one of the least autocratic leaders in Indian history among those who had a majority in parliament versus led an unstable coalition government. The Indian courts frequently restrict Modi's policies and the writings and statements of PM Modi's supporters (under the British penal code 295A which restricts hate speech.) And PM Modi is almost always silent and meekly complying when the courts rule against him and his supporters. Modi also dragged his feet on implementing uniform civil code (which would ban shariah) even though he promised this in 2014 and 67% of Indian muslim woman in public opinion polls support uniform civil code; because PM Modi was afraid of backlash from foreigners who don't live in India (including foreign muslims.) And PM Modi was only forced to push uniform civil code when Indian muslim woman leaders called him out and demanded Modi ban shariah or they would denounce him. Many Indians would prefer if PM Modi had more of Pres Reagan's and Pres Clinton's spine to pass difficult legislation and implement them despite opposition. Assume you regard all US presidents as highly authoritarian?
Pretty reasonable assessment, one that is not even that harsh on Modi. There's no doubt Modi has the support of a plurality, so should not be labelled a dictator (which also applies to Putin, contrary to your views). However, I think India's situation illustrates what happens when the framework for protecting the right of the minority against the will of the majority is undermined. What we are seeing should be described as a polarised majoritarianism, which aligns with your description of populist authoritarian. This begs the question whether there needs to be more to democracy than just one man (woman), one vote.
Thanks. I do believe it was fair, even if many Indian viewers are upset that I even looked at the question. (It’s actually a real shame and a sad reflection of the situation in the country that this happens. I have to say that India is one of the few countries where I get such a wall of negative responses.) I like your idea of polarised majoritarianism. It’s a great way of describing it. But I’d disagree about Putin. I accept that he is popular and would probably win free and fair elections. But he has completely manipulated the system to remove any serious pluralism. And the effect that he presides over a system that has hollows out civil society, press freedom, judicial independence in any meaningful way and has built such a cult of personality put him in the camp of extreme autocrats.
1000 years of hindu genocide forceful conversion so called hateful caste rhetoric breaking of India by hindu converts into Bangladesh and Pakistan led to this
Indian democracy is very vibrant and more vibrant than many Western countries. Certainly more than that of Russia too. But again, the problem with this conclusion about Modi is that it just ignores facts and realities about India. Also, what do you mean by 'framework for protecting minority'? Protecting which minority and from whom? This is where the problem begins. The reason why Modi is popular because he is indeed popular and is in no way like what you guys are believing in about him. And this perception too, is based on biased sources and rankings which are riddled with mistakes and factually objectively incorrect assertions and inaccuracies. That's all.
This is extremely biased and one sided. Spoken like a typical international commentator who has never set foot in India. India is incredibly diverse and complex. You cannot understand India by reading NyT and WaPo
Do please explain why it is based and one sided. I was careful to present both sides and put everything in context as much as one can in a short video. There is a world of difference between not saying what you would like me to say and in fact being partisan. And it is perfectly possible to explain complex things in simplified terms. But again, walk me through in detail how it is biased. I’m keen to know.

The CAA does not cancel the naturalization laws, so any person, including Muslim migrants, can apply for Indian citizenship under the existing laws. Having done this for a few years now, it’s really interesting to see how different nationalities (obviously a very crude generalisation) tend to behave. Videos on India do tend to elicit a particularly angry reaction. Far more than most countries. In fact, and I don’t say this lightly, I take a deeper breath doing India than Israel-Palestine or Russia-Ukraine. They get angry responses. @@JamesKerLindsay well, there are actually various reasons possible for this, considering your channel is in English and the fact that India's second language is still English may have an influence at getting it to more people, as a Catalan myself I can tell most videos about the situation here don't get more backlash from either Catalan or Spanish nationalists not because they are more tempered but because knowledge of English is abysmal in Spain 😂

@@JamesKerLindsay Possibly because those Muslim nations believe they can achieve peace in the after life or when mahdi arrives. Bit more complicated with Indians, who also feel that the world is unfairly dominated by the west and that something has to be corrected there.
India has always had a large and heavy handed-state. There are only 2 possible reasons anyone could think of india as more authoritarian now vs at any other point in history - 1. They genuinely are clueless about Indian politics before the weak-coalition era that preceded Modi. 2. They wilfully ignore India's past to be able to single out Modi, for ideological reasons - either Leftist sensibilities or Indias pushback against the west. Usually both. One can make the argument that India IS authoritarian, but to say that it has become so after 2014, is wrong, lazy and biased.
Did you watch the video? A large part of it was precisely about the dominance of the Gandhi dynasty and I specifically talked about Indira Gandhi’s state of emergency in the 1970s, which many called a dictatorship. So, could we perhaps not also argue that maybe it’s also wrong, lazy and biased to pass comments on things before actually considering the material in question. :-)
From being anti Modi to slightly pro Modi, here's my take. 1) We don't have a bloody choice right now. The opposition is fragmented, mostly dynasty parties and basically no one (except being relatives of powerful people) 2) India has finally got the posturing right on Kashmir. 370 and response to terrorist state of Pakistan is right. There is no point in making peace with terrorists 3) Playing a reasonably fine balance between US, China and Russia. You can't trust China but can't completely antagonize them 4) Remarkable stability of macros. Fiscal deficit, growth, markets.. everything screams stability. They are really investing in infrastructure including expressways, trains and airports..the changes are visible. Stock market EPS is the highest in history, let alone market levels. 5) I really don't like their Hindu fanatic posturing (necessary at times but they are definitely overdoing it). They have unleashed a bunch of rabid right wing dogs everywhere. 6) Taxation of salaries class is horrendous. They haven't fixed the real tax issues or the legal system or the police system. 7) They favor too much of Gujarat and Adanis of the world leaving the other states in lurch. On balance, not the best option but it would be worse with opposition.
Thanks. I really appreciate the comment. I just wish the video had provoked some more serious debate like this. Modi is clearly genuinely popular. And it is easy to overlook Congress’s dominance of Indian politics for so long. Hopefully, I brought this out. But there are nevertheless concerns about the direction Modi is taking.
If this is what dictatorship looks like. then i fully support this dictatorship. India is literally transforming before our eyes . Massive economic growth, express ways, metros, massive smart cities contructions all are happening full scale here.
I can see Orwels 'Animal Farm' playing out right before my eyes. "they had come to a time when no one dared speak his mind, when fierce, growling dogs roamed everywhere, and when you had to watch your comrades torn to pieces after confessing to shocking crimes."
I feel that this video was a bit of a disappointment. I wanted to know, why Modi might be considered a threat to democracy in India. Starting from 12:40 it was mentioned that there have been concerns about "centralization of power" and "challenges to democratic freedoms" but there was no mention of which policies specifically might centralize power and/or limit democratic freedoms. Later in the video decline in press freedom, crackdowns on civil society, and efforts to limit judicial independence were mentioned but again there were no mentions of how specifically is press freedom, civil society, and/or judicial independence being limited.

As for all those who cry about our democracy I don't give an ass. Don't worry white man we are perfectly capable of making our own decisions.
It must be remembered that a political party in Mexico ran that country’s government for a full eighty years before being beaten by Vicente Fox in the late 1990s. Mexico was classed as an unqualified democracy all the while. In India, democracy has been twinned with socialism and Marxism, and the latter is on course to being dismantled. This is akin in many ways to what happened in Singapore under LKY, the latter who is a person Mr. Modi aims to replicate. Does that make India less democratic? To the ordinary voter, it seems to be a trade-off they are willing to make. And please, please, when discussing the Ram Mandir/Babri Masjid, please add the context that the mosque structure was built on a pre-existing temple, which has been proven by professional archaeologists as well as the Indian courts; and that the matter had been presented to court even under British rule in the 1800s. A lot of western press goes with “mosque destroyed; temple built” without the added context. India probably has the world’s largest number of mosques; and there is no plan afoot to replace all those with temples. Where historically, Hindu temples were desecrated for political reasons, these are being restored through legal and political means. Far from democracy being in danger; democracy in India is working and delivering.

Only the USA, Canada, a few Latin American countries, no African countries, some but not all European countries, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Australia, New Zealand and Israel have liberal free democracy comparable to India. The kind of freedom that exists in India is unusual. And Indians are generally unaware of how unusual Indian freedom is.
The Collective West is essentially monolithic, rigid, judgmental, and convinced of its own religious and racial superiority. It cannot absorb that, in fact, India is, by the West's own standards, a far superior polity. India is an ancient society with democracy in its DNA. Over 10,000 years, India evolved a social structure that is resilient and able to accept, not merely tolerate, the diversity of its people and ideas as its strength, not weakness. Such a society is unimaginable to the Collective West and therefore the West insists on assessing India by its own shallow, superficial philosophies. The Collective West was build on the brutal looting and systematic destruction of Indian wealth and society over centuries which hid its own fault-lines. Without the loot stolen from its colonies, the Collective West will continue to implode. So, it strives to continue colonization via other means, primarily economic and religious coercion. Commentaries from the Collective West should therefore be understood as steeped in ignorant superciliousness.

Prof Lindsay thank you for a near balanced analysis. In my opinion biggest concern for the Indian nation is: Can India become rich before it gets old? India's demographic dividend is going to exhaust in next 25-30 years. Today our per capita gdp is $2500. Question is can we grow this to transition into a developed country in these 25-30 years. After that we will face the same fate as Japan did after 1990's or China is going to face in coming decades aka stagnation. Of all leaders and parties Modi and BJP with all their shortcomings seems to be our best bet. Opposition led by Congress want to take us back to the socialist shithole that India was before 1991. Almost all east asian tigers had some form of authoritarianism when they grew into a developed countries, it is only later that they became liberal democracies. India is already a democracy, so I don't think it will we hard for us to repair all damage that is done to it, once we get rich.
Thank you so much for such an interesting and measured response. I realise that the title was rather provocative, but I was clear that despite claims by others, Modi is not a dictator! But he certainly has authoritarian tendencies. But as you rightly point out, he’s far from alone in the region. I think the key issue is that India sells itself as the world’s largest democracy. But you also raise great points about the economy. This is an interesting angle. In any case, thanks so much once again for the comment. I really appreciate it.
Thank you for replying. I concede that we use democracy as our USP so others will definetly judge us accordingly. But isn't hypocrisy a useful tool in foreign affairs and is India the only one using it?😅
hello professor , good to see you again . the topic is really hot and I am glad you picked it up . The recent happenings are very true and speculations are damn right that bjp is indeed coming to power again in the country ... but the topic that is debated is if india is becoming a dictatorship ... that i would clearly deny as that public mandate goes strong with bjp while there are almost 55% people in india that rejects that party. the biggest pron about bjp is they fulfill their promises article 370 that was acting as a shield for the growing terrorism in the kashmir region , RAM mandir that is not a controversy but the solution the babri masjid that is proclaimed was just a structure loosely built upon the remains of ram mandir (and it was not taken forcefully but only after the judgment of supreme court of india) ...and similarly th sc of india gave clean chit to pm modi for gujarat riots . the other points being about the freedom of press in india sry to say that but press was never free here before 2014 it was a tool for leftist while now it is for the right . the reign of bjp is not a fruitcake for everyone it is just that bjp is far better than the opposition parties ... some of the biggest scandals happened during the tenure of congress while it is less likely in bjp rule even though there are cases . BJP is just using the system actively and strongly for it's own benefit and they cannot appease everyone . as allowing muslims from neighbouring countries doesn't makes any sense as the sole purpose for the partition was the demand of muslims only ... why they want to come back now , as we are already dealing with illegal rohingya muslims immigrants . last time india was partitioned the muslim population was 25% ... after partition they were 9% and now they are increased to 18% again ....we cant deal with their ideas again as what is happening already in kashmir, bengal and kerala. india has been secular because the majority population here are hindus but one community doesnt understand it here . the only possible way india can flourish along with all other south asian countries is that the muslim community starts being more rational than radical. the only people that are crying on youtube are funded by leftist and people applauding bjp are funded by the rightist... no one here is actually centrist(the ones who are stay away from politics)

Regardless of one’s opinion about Modi, democracies in general need term limits. Politicians all tend to think they own their positions. One clear example was Lee Kuan Yew in Singapore. Tons of examples like this

Nice summary. However, three points: 1. I don't think BJP is much different than Congress in terms of democratic values. They both have pretty poor record. The religion angle of BJPs manifesto makes it a more controversial party, and hence attracts more attention like Velcro. The biggest point in support of what I'm saying is that every piece of machinery that BJP uses to muzzle freedom of expression were introduced in the Indian laws were by the Congress. So, if India has been backsliding in democracy, it has been doing so for a long time. Not that it is something to be happy about, but something people fail to point out when criticizing the current government in charge. 2. BJP is dismantling the system, that the Congress setup which helped them to control the flow of power, and is replacing it by new tools that will help them control the flow of power. I feel in the grand scheme of things, it is just handing over of the power from the British Empire, to the Congress, to the BJP. A good example of that is academia, which was extremely left-leaning in India (like much of the world) during the time of Congress, which disfavored BJP. Now, BJP is trying to change that. Is that good for the country? I don't think so, but neither was what Congress did. Again, the focus on BJP happens due to the religious element in BJPs manifesto, which is particularly Velcro-like for left media. 3. Speaking of media, it has gone nuts, losing its credibility. I think the biggest talking point we should have today is this polarization that media (social or otherwise) has brought about. In the context of this video, let me talk about this press-freedom index that you mentioned in the video. While, I would like to know about declining press freedom in India, but I want it to come from a trustworthy source. When I see the index and find countries like Pakistan and Afghanistan ranked above India, these are countries where journalists are routinely abducted and murdered, then in the best case scenario it loses all its credibility, and in the worst case it sounds like propaganda to me. Let's make media great again, by calling out where the media is clearly at fault.
Thank you so much for the comment. I really appreciate it, especially after the tone of so many others. This all makes a lot of sense. And point well taken about the media freedom. I wonder if the organisation actually sits down and considers the results when they are compiled. It was interesting to hear your view on the transfer of power from Britain to Congress to BJP. It raises some very intriguing questions.
@@JamesKerLindsay There is a Hindi word that has in recent times become very widely used in India. It's called "bhakt", which means devotee. Normally, it will be considered a term with a positive connotation. However, in the political sphere, this is a derogatory term mostly used towards people who support the BJP, perhaps aimed at some of their more ardent supporters. I would, however, argue that it can be equally used for the Congress and their supporters, and every other party in India and their supporters. Bhakti is part of the culture of India, we pledge loyalty to people who help us, and who take care of us. But, this is an example of something that could generally be considered a positive quality, turning out to be detrimental in the democratic exercise. People often forget that in a democracy (unlike in all other forms of government) the winner serves, and not rules, the people. We voted them to this position. They do not need our support beyond that. It is their job to support us. But this misplaced sense of loyalty leads us to jump on the bandwagon. We see it even in the language we use when we call the winner of the election "The ruling party". This sentiment of loyalty (raj-bhakti) is what the Congress used for 70 years, and now the tide seems to have turned in BJPs favor. So, while the British literally ruled over us, they then passed the baton to the Congress to "rule" what was left of India, and now the BJP has the scepter. So, it is intriguing indeed, that while in certain ways we are a very democratic culture, much before we formally became democratic (which is why we have been pluralistic for centuries), on the other hand, we are too loyal to wield our democratic powers. You can say India is a nation of democratic people who have always been ruled by autocratic elites.
After kashmiri was stripped of its special status the terrorism there drastically decreased. People living there acknowledged this too. Even G20 meetings were held there. Tell that too. Why do you leave out the good parts?

# The Ayodhya Temple Dispute: A Landmark Supreme Court Verdict
## Abstract
The Ayodhya temple dispute, a longstanding legal battle, culminated in a historic judgment by the Supreme Court of India on November 9, 2019. This essay provides an overview of the context, legal proceedings, and implications of the court's decision, which allocated the disputed land for the construction of a Hindu temple and provided an alternative site for a mosque.
## Introduction
The Ayodhya dispute revolves around a piece of land in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, which holds immense religious significance for both Hindus and Muslims. The contentious issue has been a subject of intense debate, legal battles, and communal tensions for decades. The Supreme Court's verdict sought to address the ownership claims and pave the way for a resolution.
## Background
1. **Historical Context**:
- Ayodhya is believed to be the birthplace of Lord Rama, a revered deity in Hinduism.
2. **Allahabad High Court Verdict (2010)**:
- The Allahabad High Court pronounced its judgment on September 30, 2010. The three-judge bench ruled that the 2.77 acres of Ayodhya land should be divided into three parts:
- One-third to the deity Ram Lalla (represented by the Hindu Mahasabha).
## The Supreme Court Verdict (2019)
1. **Allocation of Land**:
- The Supreme Court ordered the entire disputed land (2.77 acres) to be handed over to a trust (to be created by the Indian government) for the construction of the Ram Janmabhoomi temple.
- Simultaneously, the court directed the government to allocate an alternative 5 acres of land to the Uttar Pradesh Sunni Central Waqf Board at another suitable location within Ayodhya for the construction of a mosque.
2. **Basis for Decision**:
- The court considered evidence of continuous worship by Hindus at the disputed structure. The Hindu parties presented stronger evidence in this regard.
- The Sunni Waqf Board failed to establish ownership through adverse possession or waqf (endowment).
3. **Implications**:
- The judgment settled the long-standing dispute, allowing for the construction of the Ram temple.
- It aimed to balance the interests of both communities by providing an alternative site for the mosque.
## Conclusion
The Supreme Court's decision in the Ayodhya temple dispute marked a significant moment in India's legal history.

# The Resounding Achievements of the Modi Government: A Comprehensive Analysis
## Abstract
The tenure of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been marked by significant policy reforms, economic transformations, and assertive leadership on the global stage. This essay examines the achievements of the Modi government, emphasizing their impact on India's socio-economic landscape. From tax reforms to pandemic management, the government's actions have left an indelible mark on the nation.
## Introduction
India, as a vibrant democracy, has witnessed dynamic shifts in governance over the years. The Modi government, which assumed office in 2014, embarked on a transformative journey, aiming to address critical challenges and propel the nation toward progress. In this essay, we delve into the resounding achievements of the Modi administration, highlighting key areas of impact.
## Tax Reforms and Demonetization
The Goods and Services Tax (GST) reform stands as a watershed moment in India's tax history.
## Make in India Initiative
The "Make in India" campaign sought to transform India into a global manufacturing hub. Its impact has been palpable-exports have surged, and the nation has gained technological prowess. Notably, the defense sector witnessed a paradigm shift-from reliance on foreign imports to indigenous production of defense equipment. India's self-reliance in defense manufacturing has bolstered national security.
## Effective Handling of the COVID-19 Pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic posed unprecedented challenges globally.
## Strengthening India's Position on the Global Stage
Prime Minister Modi's assertive foreign policy has elevated India's standing internationally. His unwavering commitment to national security, strategic partnerships, and regional stability has been evident. Whether addressing border tensions or advocating for India's interests in multilateral forums, the government has consistently projected India as a responsible global player.
## Economic Transformation
India's economic trajectory shifted significantly during Modi's tenure. From being part of the "Fragile 5" economies, India now ranks as the fifth-largest economy globally. The sustained growth, despite occasional setbacks due to reforms like demonetization and GST, underscores the government's economic acumen. Inflation control measures have also contributed to macroeconomic stability.
## Expanding Political Footprint
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), under Modi's leadership, expanded its political footprint across states and union territories. From governing seven states in 2014, the BJP now holds power in 15 states and union territories, including politically crucial regions. This electoral success reflects the party's organizational strength and resonates with voters.
## Social Welfare Programs
Initiatives such as the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), Jan Dhan Yojana, and Ujjwala Yojana have directly impacted citizens' lives. These programs prioritize inclusive development, addressing housing, financial inclusion, and clean cooking fuel availability. The government's commitment to social welfare underscores its pro-people approach.
## Conclusion
While a robust opposition is essential for a healthy democracy, voters must critically evaluate promises and responsibilities. The Modi government's achievements resonate as a testament to their transformative vision for India's progress. As the nation navigates future challenges, these accomplishments serve as guiding beacons, shaping India's destiny on the global stage.

5. **Digital Payments Revolution**:
- The demonetization move in 2016 accelerated the adoption of digital payment systems. Mobile wallets, UPI, and other digital payment platforms have become integral to daily transactions.
## Implications and Future Prospects
The Digital India transformation has far-reaching implications:
1. **Economic Growth**:
- A digitally empowered economy can drive innovation, boost productivity, and attract investments. E-commerce, fintech, and IT services are poised for exponential growth.
2. **Inclusive Development**:
- Digital services can bridge urban-rural divides, improve healthcare delivery, and enhance education outcomes. The program's success lies in ensuring equitable access for all.
3. **Cybersecurity Challenges**:
- As digital adoption increases, cybersecurity becomes critical. Safeguarding data, privacy, and critical infrastructure remains a priority.
4. **Continued Collaboration**:
- Public-private partnerships are essential for sustained progress. Industry collaboration, research, and policy support will shape India's digital future.
In conclusion, the Digital India initiative represents a transformative force, altering India's growth trajectory. As the nation embraces digital possibilities, it must remain committed to inclusivity, innovation, and responsible digital governance..

While it resolved a contentious issue, it also underscored the need for communal harmony and respect for diverse religious sentiments. The allocation of land for both the temple and the mosque reflects the court's attempt to strike a delicate balance between faith and justice²³⁴.

Well im an indian and im gonna vote for the first time and im voting for modi because There isnt any other alternative leader as of now the opposition is shattered
Babri Masjid's archeological survey was highly controversial and vague, in contrast to places like Kashi Vishwanath that was historically recorded to be destroyed by Aurangzeb, so most Hindutvadis just argued that it was Ram's Birthplace because of popular folklore
And the part about GDP is also not true.
I agree with his each points.

Though I disagree with a few things:
1) Collapse of the soviet union was a victory of liberal-capitalism over communism, and not of liberal-democracy over communism.

India has always had a large and heavy handed-state. There are only 2 possible reasons anyone could think of india as more authoritarian now vs at any other point in history -
The opposition is fragmented, mostly dynasty parties and basically no one (except being relatives of powerful people)
2) India has finally got the posturing right on Kashmir. 370 and response to terrorist state of Pakistan is right. There is no point in making peace with terrorists
3) Playing a reasonably fine balance between US, China and Russia. You can't trust China but can't completely antagonize them
4) Remarkable stability of macros.

India is already a democracy, so I don't think it will we hard for us to repair all damage that is done to it, once we get rich.

good to see you again
. the topic is really hot and I am glad you picked it up .
One party dominating politics is not dictatorship.

I up voted the video as soon as i saw the correct map of India.
Nice summary. However, three points:
Oh my God, you are a brave person for making this video. I hope the comment section won't be overrun by Indian bots.
Thanks. I would like to think that some of them might actually bother to watch the video first. It's an important question and I think I handled it fairly. (But I suspect we both know that this is probably wishful thinking!)
Isn't that the problem referring to Indians who disagree maybe in bad taste as not human, as bots? You're just getting a taste of the loud, messy and extremely opinionated Indian democracy. That's how India is and that's how Indians are.
There is an entire anti Modi ecosystem thriving in India (From Ravish Kumar to Dhruv Rathee to "The Deshbhakt" Banerjee) getting supports from entire south Asian Abduls, ricebags & communists and you may be one of them.
Then how is this video Brave?
Just because somebody think different , they are not bots😂
