    Melting ice and ice water is always 32°F, so no need to take temps until after all ice has melted. Until then the real test is how much ice is left. Otherwise, great test. Thanks!

      i learned adding rock salt to the ice will make it last longer..(like an iceberg)... my grand dad was a fisherman and he always salted his ice on the boat to make it last longer and you had to use a hammer to break it up

      @tdatu 3 года назад

      Maybe the next test is to measure how much water volume over time. Higher volume of water the less it retains ice.

    I have the same cooler, I took off the lid and placed it on a flat surface to help the foam travel inside the lid. Second, there's a cap/plug near where you drilled the hole, i used the existing plug hole to stuff the foam.

    • @edwinmaguillicuddy9069
      @edwinmaguillicuddy9069 Год назад +1

      Yes but that’s missing the point of what the lid is supposed to be used for! Remove the lid, take the plug out, fill the inside of the lid full of water, plug it back up, freeze the lid overnight, and enjoy the extra time your cooler stays colder longer!

    The cooler in the middle is insulated by the other two coolers beside it. The air circulating around the outside coolers will melt ice faster.

  • @jeffbguarino
    @jeffbguarino 3 года назад +5

    You put the blue modified one in the middle where it would have two sides protected by the other two coolers. So I would say you should do this a third time with at least a 6 inches of separation. Also dead airspace inside a cooler should have not effect. The dead air in the cooler will be the same temperature as the ice water combo. So the heat flow through the walls should only depend on the R value and the area of the inside of each cooler. They all looked pretty similar in size.

      You could also use a white silicone on the outside where the holes were to cover up the dried foam. Another video on RUclips shows the guy letting the foam dry and then peeling it off so it's not sticky.

      He put some work, time and money on that modified cooler. It makes sense to give his project that extra added edge. Heck, if I was him, I would have completely surrounded it and stacked one on top. He might have got one additional day of ice with that set up.

    I recently pulled two cheap coolers apart both had gaps in the base insulation one was in two pieces with a gap and the other had a two inch square gap for a non existent drain a quick check with a strong light would reveal any gaps,I got a 30% increase in ice retention by fixing the gap and foam filling the lid regards Mike

  • @MoSportsUSA
    @MoSportsUSA 3 года назад +2

    One large hole was a mistake. You need multiple small holes barely larger than the foam can's spray straw. The foam was shooting right back out of that single entry hole because all the small volume of foam did was compress existing air within the lid. You need not only air escape holes but also holes to allow you to reach every region within the lid. Sorry to say but that alone invalidates any further comparisons and testing using that cooler.

  • @metalwolf1086

    I believe it’s a fail of a test since the unmodded cooler is different then the modded one. They should be the same style for best results. I have seen other videos where they used two identical coolers and foaming the lid made it work worse. The modded cooler in the video also has the bulk of the bottom off the hot ground a little due to its design, which would help, unlike the other coolers.

  • @SilentStorm_5
    @SilentStorm_5 4 года назад +2

    How is that worth the investment?? To have a few more ice cubes?? So you wasted more money, and time for very little results.... when you should just get a yeti, or one comparable to a yeti. Insulating the top, and adding a seal is not near as important as having a cooler with quality insulation inside all of the walls! Because that’s where insulation is most important. There, I just saved all of these RUclips cooler hack channels a bunch of time, money and effort! Not only that, but doesn’t anybody look to see if somebody else has made the same video before they waste their time? Because there are quite a few videos out there exactly like this and all of them have held the same results, but the ones that compare there “improvements” to a yeti, no matter what improvements they make to cheaper coolers, it doesn’t come close to a yeti, Because cheaper coolers are cheap for a reason! And yes I know a yeti is more expensive, but you’re going to have these coolers for a good amount of time so the money you waste on ice (and possibly ruined food) for these cheaper coolers, you could’ve bought a yeti!

    • @DIYHunter
      @DIYHunter  4 года назад +2

      Silent Storm these coolers were $15 we own yetis and we use these for fish storage and beach usage to not gunk up and ruin our yetis. They’ll hold ice in the sun well over a full day on a boat or beach for $15 bucks can’t beat it

    • @surfacecreations

      Nice try Yeti salesman. There are plenty of videos of $100 Walmart coolers doing better than a Yeti cooler.
      People only buy Yeti now because they want others to know they spent $300+ on a silly cooler. Just like kids
      buying $3-400 Yeezys shoes to showoff on Instagram. The rest of the cooler market now sells the same "high
      performance"coolers for a fraction of the price as it should be for a piece of molded plastic.

      @@SilentStorm_5 You got to sell those Yetis somehow ;) But for real though I was about to just bite the bullet and get a medium size Yeti and then I started researching which is why I even came across this video here. I was just doing what most other people do and buy what I see everybody buying and talking about. I've always just used whatever $30 cooler that was available and never had issues. Then I wanted to get my girlfriend a fancy color one for the beach and after days of watching reviews online I realized it just wasn't worth paying 3x the amount for what MIGHT be possibly a day more of unmelted ice. Went to Wallyworld and got a "Lifetime" brand blue colored 55 qt cooler and it really just seems like the same as a Yeti but 1/3 the price. All the same features and watching RUclips reviews it did equal to the Yeti. Thumbs up to you for not getting defensive when I joked.
