I miss Kenny Rankin. When he died of lung cancer, he and I were writing his autobiography. He'd just begun to tell me about his childhood in New York. The conversations we had were chilling. Kenny endured a lot of very horrific times in his life, but, he said, the music always saved him. There has never been a better music artist than Kenny Rankin. His voice simply had no rival. The beauty of his music protected him from the demons inside and out. I miss him every day. This song is his masterpiece.
I first heard this song live at the Shaboo in CT. I was going out with my now husband and when the song was over we both looked at each other and said I love you for the first time. We've been married for 42 years now. This song is the ultimate!
This album came out when I was a senior in high school. I immediately fell in love with Kenny Rankin and every song on the album. I still love it and Kenny. RIP Kenny 🙏 I miss your beautiful voice. ❤ 🙏
Gosh ...... it seems like I haven't heard this beautiful number for 1,000 years. I had forgotten all about this exceptional artist. This is why I love RUclips. You can stumble upon treasures from the past. Music this good brings such joy to my heart and mind ..... R.I.P., Kenny Rankin .... you were a wonderful gift to this troubled world ... Thank You!
I used to listen to this as a young man, dreaming of the woman I had not met yet, but knew some day I would. The woman I would fall in love with and spend my life with her. I found her 2 years later and this song brings back those yearning years. 33 years later and I'm lucky to still have her in my life. Thanks for coming into my life, honey.
Kenny And I both grew up as teenagers on 160th street between Ft. Washington Avenue and Riverside Drive in upper Washington Heights Manhattan, we met through both our mutual interest in music, and through the kids we hung out with, we used to sing together as a group with our school mates and friends Ronnie Espasito, Johnny Costa, Jimmy Conway, and Freddy Wells, and I. We would sing next to the poolroom hall on top of the Rio Movie Theater on Broadway, and 160 street, cause it had a great acoustical sound, and gave a great sound to our group singing covered Doo Wop songs at the time. Kenny had a God given natural talent he could sing, thought himself to play the Guitar and Piano, and conga's. I use to hang out with Kenny at his apartment on Riverside Drive where he lived with his Mother Elizabeth, and sister Genie. In Fact Kenny didicated Professional Dreamer Album to his Mother Elizabeth. Kenny was the one who gave me lessons on the guitar and really got me interested in music. Which led eventually to my singing and recording with other groups like The Spirals, Tony And The Holidays, and ending up with a group called The Chevrons. Kenny went on and became one of our most talented Singer/ Song writers and Guitar players of our time. Kenny's ability to take a song and improvise was spectacular, and unlimited in scope. With each song Kenny gave us his interpretation and his improvised melodically, turning an ordinary song into a Beautiful poetic musical sound! Kenny Died to young, he had a lot more to give and accomplish, but we are thankful for what he did give us in his Beautiful songs, and Music. Kenny You are surely missed! RIP Kenny
Raul Conde thanks so much for sharing this story. he truly is a gem in giving the world his kind of music. he lifts the spirit to great heights! thanks God for kenny!
Thank you for that story, Raul. Kenny was my cousin, and I knew the story but not all the names. He also dedicated 'The Kenny Rankin Album' to his mother Elizabeth, who I would visit almost every day after class at Hunter. She lived on 70th and 2nd. Prior to his death, he called my mother and left a message saying that he had cancer and was dying. She was visiting me for my birthday, May 19, in Virginia, and didn't get the message until she got home to Pennsylvania. He was gone on June 7, 2009. Last time I saw him was August 2008. Kenny had the rare quality of never singing the tune exactly the same way twice, but each being better than the last, AND, in his recordings, the quality where it's as if I hear something new no matter how many times I've heard it. I am completely biased, but he is the best male vocalist ever to have lived. He used to tell me, "You have to HAVE to do this", referring to singing. Then he would say, "sing ALL the time. Sing the shower, in the car, in the street, wherever. SING all the time."
Raul Conde Riverside Church. Willing Sloane Coffin jr.Never agreed with him Till i heard. his Xmas broadcast. There was no room at the inn for him.The only room for him was on the cross. Is there. room for Him in your Heart?
I shared a manager with him and had a meaningful period of my life in close proximity to him and Yvonne. What a gift he was given, and he didn't waste it.One of the purest voices I ever heard. I'm so glad for him he had this chance to work with Don Costa. We should all be so lucky. We played many dates on the same bill. They were crazy times and he managed to survive them through the west coast years. New York created us both and the music was thick in the air up in Harlem and in Greenwich Village. I think of him all the time and wish he hadn't had such a rough go of it.
I don't expect anyone to understand what I'm trying to convey, but I feel a sort of nostalgia from this song and I'm only 24. My mother introduced me to it, and it makes me sit back and think of better times. Simpler times when the world wasn't so full of hate and hardship. Thank you so much for uploading this, I've had it on repeat for a while now
It's OK, a lot of us feel that way. Kenny Rankin, James Taylor, Jim Croce, Dan Fogelberg, David Gates, Gordon Lightfoot, they were the "woke" men of their time.
This is one of my all time favorite songs and I'm 60. Good for your mom for turning you on to Kenny Rankin. He was a stellar talent and another one gone too soon. Continue to enjoy!
Great Post the 60s and 70s were "unwoke", except for a few hippies and I was one but I grew up thank God. We didn't have to lock our doors, we could leave the keys in our cars at night we could wear any color hat we wanted to without be threatened by idiots. Dreaming of Utopia is fun but accepting reality actually works better. I enjoy the feeling I get when I think of a better times too and I'm still not "WOKE" or do I wish to be.
Kenny Rankin should be a name that everyone who knows anything about music should know. His voice was incomparable....the way he made every song his own without changing a word was a unique talent. I miss him so much....his passing left a void in music that can't be filled.
This, song will forever make me feel divinely connected to my momma ❤️ she listened to Kenny's records my whole life and sang along with her glorious voice ❤️ I can smell the Bay Laurel candles and dinner cooking whilst she did so
I came across trhis artist by way of another I know here in Philly who asked me to get any Kenny Rankin lps in my travels back in 96. Found a few and decided to give them a spin before I gave them to him. KR's sound instantly made me a fan. Great unrated performer. It's a shame he's no longer with us. May he rest in peace.
My late sister introduced me to this album in the 70's and I instantly fell in love with it. I saw him perform live once as the lead in for Manhattan Transfer at The Mosque in Richmond, VA some years later. Just him, by himself on stage, with his guitar and that voice. Wonderful. It was the only reason I went to the concert. It's a shame he died so young.
Joy, happiness and the tears of remembrance of special lady I had the opportunity to love during the 70's. Silver Morning was an album we discovered together and I'll always be grateful....to this day, I miss her
Skated outside in the "Silver Morning" of Milwaukee's Humboldt Park 🏞️🎄🎄🎄⛄⛄⛄ on the South side of town, right next to BayView High School 🏫 then went to class: then skated after school in the ❄️🌨️ 🥶 snow, wind, cold & rain. 🌧️ Nothing like seeing Kenny in person when he performed at The Stone Toad 🐸 downtown. What a voice - what a guitarist. R.I.P. Kenny 💐 🍀🙏
Sweet memories of the 70s and a dalliance with a sweet girl Denise... ahh, youth. Love you Kenny. Thanks. Can't wait to listen to you on the other side.
In my family, we always thought of him as musician's musician. I knew when I first heard this song that he was on his way to greatness. Thank you Kenny for giving us the gift of your voice, that was never tarnished by time.
I weep for the young love I experienced. Blessed by Kenny Rankin's music. The discovery, the confusion, the exultation, the guilt, the frustration, the terror.
I was in NYC getting ready to see Les Paul at the Iridium Jazz Club, I was across the street in a music store browsing which was like an evening in heaven when I heard he had died. The only solace I had was knowing his breadth of work he left behind. In a lot of ways it felt surreal being at the club he payed so often and his birthplace, NYC. I will remember this moment the rest of my life. A lot of people don't have that.
Silver Morning was my first introduction to Kenny and this album was my first of his many. Seeing him at the Pasadena Ice House and the Golden Bear several times were memories to cherish. Always wished he could have performed with Tim Weisberg.
Sitting in the front row at the Pasadena Ice House several times I remember Kenny singing and playing the piano to this song. The Golden Bear also guested his magical voice. He and Whitney Huston were amazing at adjusting their expressions to get the right vocal results.
One of the soundtracks to my life in those years. Woke up with it on my mind for some reason... Thank you so much for posting it! Now I'll have to find it for my collection!

....TIME DANCE...What we know of Time would fit into a teaspoon....Much like Love (a first cousin), the definition of Time is written on water...Ask X number of people to define to define either word...And you will get X number of different answers...And, not surprisingly, part of X will be unable to offer an answer...Fascinating that two simple words can produce cerebral stagnation...My own belief (relevant only to me) is that all of the angst regarding Time is a Red Herring...The extent of fact regarding Time is, essentially, that it has a beginning part and an ending part...The quandry exists between these two points...From my Heart, Mr. Rankin, merci beaucoup...Pax.

Amazing!. Do you know what happened to that autobiography, if they still will make it?
Perfection. What else, it's Kenny Rankin.
I bought my first Kenny Rankin LPs in the early 1970s, and I still enjoy his songs just as much as I did 50 years ago.

College or University? I can't stand it when Americans say College. Either you went to University or you went to College. Which is it?
What a beautiful song, what a beautiful, unforgettable voice, like being enveloped in starlight. Thank you Kenny
Yes our Sun is a Star. That is exactly what Kenny was, with his music.
