Lies of Locke Lamora is one of my favorites! I love snark/humor in books and this one has it. I’ve read all 3 but it’s great. Also one of my favorites tropes of found family.
I live in Denver less than a mile from the Tattered Cover!🎉 It’s a Denver local shop that recently was bought by Barnes and Nobles but they are keeping the original vibe. How funny!
Wonderful! Tayler is already loving Locke Lamora, and the more I walk past my copy of the kelly gang, the more I want to just p[ick it up and start reading.
The Secret History is one of my favourite books of all time. I'm so jealous of you experiencing it for the first time! I'm an Aussie and The True History of the Kelly Gang is great! It's about Ned Kelly, a real-life 19th century Australian bushranger, outlaw and convicted police murderer. The bullet proof armour he wore during his final shootout with the police is so famous, you would surely recognise it. There was a film made with Heath Ledger in the early 2000s.
Lonesome Dove is one of the best books I've ever read. This book sent me on a years' long love affair with Larry McMurty. His character development is phenomenal.
@@GoodBooksLately Terms of Endearment is another fantastic book by McMurtry. His character development goes so far beyond anything in the movie. I followed those characters through several books.
Hi Tayler and Branden! I may pick up Lonesome Dove after hearing more about it from you. I let The Secret History sit on my shelves for years unread. I found the first maybe 20 pages or so a bit dry when the focus is a bit more on the Greek classics but then I could not put it down! It's definitely one of those books you wish you could read again for the first time. Enjoy!
Excellent. From what we hear, you won't be disappointed by Lonesome Dove. Also, that's a similar thing we keep hearing about the secret history as well. Exciting reading ahead.
Ah, finally you mention I book I've read! I loved Lonesome Dove! Would happily read again. I also watched the miniseries and enjoyed that. You guys always have the most interesting books or takes on books that pique my interest. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks, y’all! I picked up a copy of Lonesome Dove a couple of months ago and look forward to starting it soon. It was my late father’s favorite book of all time, and I wished I’d had the wherewithal to take advantage of reading it and talking about it with him when he was alive, but I was still too young to appreciate how meaningful it could be. I anticipate I will cherish a shared connection once I get going with the book. (Didn’t intend to get so sentimental 😅)
Paul Auster is one of my favourites too and the New York Trilogy is one of the first books I read in English (I read the French translation as well). I might need to re-read. Funny thing, it was actually came up in my end exams of high school. I read the Secret History. I cannot remember it! 😅 I think I liked it.
With every one of your videos I watch, my Want To Read list grows! I’m such a sucker for a gorgeous book cover and I try so hard to not let that sway me, but it’s so hard not to! I’m not normally a graphic novel reader, but those illustrations in My Favorite Thing is Monsters has me hooked and it’s added to my list. Along with The New York Trilogy because that cover and the author’s bio…come on!
The movie Bliss based on Peter Carey’s book has one of my favorite descriptions of someone passing… Lonesome Dive sounds good! I would have never thought to pick that up. I think I am one of the few people that really does not care for Donna Tartt books 🤷🏻♀️ but plenty of people do! I preferred ML Rio’s We Were Villains which has a similar vibe less Holden Caulfield for me 😅 (to borrow on your discussion from another podcast). The Lies of Locke Lamora also sounds good!👍🏼 I’ll be interested to hear the follow up!😊
Donna Tartt is great and I liked The Secret History but The Goldfinch is my favorite. I am also intrigued by all the raves for Lonesome Dove. I am not into westerns at all, but I plan to check it out soon. I am interested to hear how you like it.
I dabbled a bit in The Savage Detectives. It felt like Moby Dick, Infinite Jest, Gravity’s Rainbow and some of those other hefty classics with dense prose. I appreciate the eclectic interests of you both.
Love your channel! I suggest you read the first book in the First Law Series by Joe Abercrombie which is The Blade Itself. There are a total of 9 books (3 trilogies) in the First Law world. The book you picked up, A Little Hatred, is book seven. They are best read in order.
I also kept hearing about Lonesome Dove but wasn’t ready to buy a new copy. Lucky for me at my library’s book sale, I found it in a mass market paperback for 1$ When I checked out, the cashier was a retired school librarian and she said how much she loved the book! If it’s as good as everyone says, I’ll definitely go get a new one for my library 😄😄😄😄
I added Lonesome Dove to my shelves at the end of December and hope to add it to the rest of the thick ass books I’m reading this year! 😂 I read A secret history and while it felt long and slow…. It has stuck with me! Didn’t love the experience reading it, but looking back - the story has stuck with me and I still think about it….so a favorite- even if it wasn’t right away!
Tayler here! I love that you’ve experienced that with a book. I’ve had a very similar experience and it’s interesting. It’s like retrospective appreciation.
The Tattered Cover is a bookstore in Denver. I lived there in 1992 and loved hanging out there. Three stories of books with an attached parking garage that you could get directly in to the floor where you wanted to start. I have Lonesome Dove but haven't read it yet. Thinking it might be my summer read. The mini series is excellent. I've tried to get a copy of Three Bags Full since you mentioned it months ago on your knitting channel and haven't had any luck. Many of your new procurements sound great!
Ned Kelly was the one with the iconic armour. The helm looks like a welding helmet. We call him a Bush Ranger. We had a booze bottle display holder that was crafted to look like his armour. Edit: The Gentlemen Bastard Sequence is a lot of fun. 😊
Glad you picked Donna Tartt's debut Novel. Can I also suggest reading her second underrated novel "The Little Friend". This story was much much more compelling. For some reason this book has less love than her other novels & is seldom talked about ??!! The story revolves around a inquisitive young girl , who's Brother was murdered when she was a little baby. As she grows up she becomes quite curious about her deceased brother - who she hardly remembers. She also becomes puzzled by the reactions of the adults; especially with her constant questioning. In her childish way she and her friend then become whodunit detectives. It has a Southern Gothic, Swampy Setting. Would make a fascinating film with the right Director. (Saw the Goldfinch film...it was. a .%$%^ disgrace !!!)
The Secret History was based on/influenced by a real mystery of a Bennington College student named Paula Welden who went missing and was never found. It was during a time when several people went missing in a specific area here in Bennington, and was the reason that the Vermont State Police was founded. Donna Tartt is a graduate of Bennington College. It's quite a story.
Another book was written about this, Quantum Girl Theory by Erin Kate Ryn. I interviewed her for the bookstore that I work for. She did an incredible amount of research on the case. Her book is not a non-fiction work on the case. It's a fictionalized imagining of the case.
For stinky books, put it in a ziplock bag with a sock filled with clay cat litter (not clumping). It may take a few weeks (depending on the extent of stench). Open the bag periodically to check. FYI also works with smelly yarn that I get donated to me (perfume).
Excited to hear what you think of Secret History! I only read it last year for the first time… 😅 I might have to read it a second time to get the hype 😮 controversial I know! X
I listened to lots of ‘top ten books of 2024’ also, and though lonesome Dove doesn’t sound like a book I’d be drawn to, I’ve added it to my tbr list but I’ll wait for your take on it Tayler, before I read it!
If you do enjoy A SECRET HISTORY, you may want to check out the podcast ONCE UPON A TIME… AT BENNINGTON COLLEGE. It’s about Bret Easton Ellington’s and Donna Tartt’s time there and provides some really interesting context to their first novels, which is THE SECRET HISTORY for Donna Tartt. And while I enjoyed A SECRET HISTORY, her GOLDFINCH is definitely in my top five.
If you’re interested in Latin American history check out Pedro Paramo, it’s a short novel, the author is thought of as the father of magical realism. I first heard of it because I saw comments of people who grew up in Mexico saying they read it in grade school, which sent me down a rabbit hole of what do other countries read in school? I have the Savage Detectives on my TBR but forgot all about it. It says it’s 672 pages but your copy looks so much smaller than that! I’m interested in Lonesome Dove, but my large novel for the year is going to be East of Eden..I’m just drawn to it for some reason. For liking lost artifacts..a journalist wrote a novel called The Last Slave Ship: The True Story of How the Clotilda was found…you might already know of this from being a history teacher, but it is absolutely fascinating. The author found the ship..and he has several lectures and interviews here on RUclips if you can’t get to the novel. This is the history I wish we were taught!
The Secret History is a fascinating, dark read. My favourite in the dark academia genre is If We Were Villians by M.L. Rio. I really enjoy listening to your channel.
For a non-fiction check into Go To Hell A Traveler’s Guide To Earth’s Most Otherworldly Destinations by Erika Engelhaupt, it’s put out my National Geographic, really great! Also loved A Secret History, great choice! I also read Lonesome Dove way back when, need to plan a reread soon.
A fantastic non-fiction book that reads like fiction is Ken Follett's "On Wings of Eagles" about rescuing Ross Perot employees kept as hostages in Iran.
If you're going to read Abercrombie's story(ies), go back to the First Law trilogy. Age of Madness is the last and is amazing, but is 10000 times more amazing if you've read them all.
I would classify Master of Djinn by P. Dejèlí Clark as a historical fantasy! it’s an alternate reality Cairo in 1912 where demons live among humans. I really enjoyed it!

Oh cool. I just watched a video about how Barnes and Noble was doing that. Pretty cool. 😁
The Lies of Locke Lamora is so much fun. Peter Carey is a much esteemed Aussie author. 💜
Wonderful! Tayler is already loving Locke Lamora, and the more I walk past my copy of the kelly gang, the more I want to just p[ick it up and start reading.

I read The Lonesome Dove a while back and was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it.
I love to hear that. The hype has me eager to start.
Lonesome Dove is a great book! I listened to it on Audible and it was so entertaining. Great writing and character development! I hope you enjoy it!

I love that. The more and more I hear about the greatness of lonesome dove the more if moves up the tbr list.
Which book is number 1 in the Witcher series?
Great question. I believe the consensus is that you should start with The Last Wish even though it wasn't the first published.
Tayler here! The Last Wish is where you need to start. 👍❤️
A fantastic non-fiction book that reads like fiction is Ken Follett's "On Wings of Eagles" about rescuing Ross Perot employees kept as hostages in Iran.
Oh wow! Sounds great. Thanks for the recommendation! ❤️❤️❤️
If you're going to read Abercrombie's story(ies), go back to the First Law trilogy. Age of Madness is the last and is amazing, but is 10000 times more amazing if you've read them all.
