When I left school, I fell into a wonderful job at a local small engine shop where I worked the counter for a couple years. Hi Chickanic, great videos and very well communicated - thanks. I have a Stihl HS 81 RC hedgecutter - so with the ergo start. Obviously this is not the BG 66 C but it is a ‘C’ configuration. Do you think that I could use this same part number on my hedgecutter?
If you want to undo a tight knot, simply place the cord on a hard surface and gently tap the know with a hammer. You might need to turn the knot over and tap it again from the other side, but when you’ve done you’ll be able to easily untie it.
ya gotta massage the knot.
That method actually works on big knots as well. My tow strap for my truck got knotted and it worked good for undoing it.
Or, you can just cut it off.
Or, do what Alexander the Great did with the Gordian knot. Just cut the damn thing!

Those nimble fingers 😍, my late wife has rescued me a few times with hers , and a grand daughter once on her car, when the radiator plug was never plugged in from new, she got her hand easily through a lightening hole and plugged it in , saving me from having to take out the battery and carrier for access . Nothing to do with garden machinery but a delight to see .Thanks for the tip Bea ❤

I commented a few weeks ago about giving us (lay people) an idea of the time it takes you to do demonstrated projects so we can anticipate how long (probably longer) it would take us. Those easy start Stihls remind me of the old Briggs and Stratton motors with the wind up crank on top of them. If you're old enough to remember those. I seen a lot of them back in the day when worked on mowers. About the same category of junk in my opinion. The pull up starters were better but not great. I made sure all of my Stihl products didn't have that easy start on them when I bought them. Great video as always.
I remember seeing them, but never used them.
Seen the old crank starts and used them when I was a kid. Am 71 now.
I picked up one of those on garbage day, but ended up putting a recoil from another dead mower. They were slow, and a pain to use.
When I was a kid I cut grass and one guy insisted I use his mower instead of mine, and his had one of those wind-up Briggs engines. It was way more work winding that thing up several times versus a couple of pulls of the rope. Some seemingly good ideas are just duds.
Funny you should mention that because I have one in my Barn that’s in pretty good shape. Love this Chickcanic. Teaching this old dog some new tricks.
Holy crap!!!!!! Thank You!!!! I've repaired a few of those and they always come back. I've steered people away from the 56/86C's for that reason. Not seeing issues as much in the trimmers and saws but those blowers suck! I'm ordering a few of those rope rotors now! You're my shero!!!!

This has happened in my job plenty of times with the spring. You’re right, it sometimes happens again even with the new spring in but now every time i change the spring i also change the butterfly clip aswell. I think it gets damaged when the spring forces itself onto it when the spring fails. Never had a problem since changing the spring AND the butterfly clip.

I purposely do my best to avoid any equipment with "easy start" because it's one more thing to cause frustration down the road.

I guess I'm lucky. My MS 180c is my go-to saw and has been used professionally for 4 years in the hot desert heat. The easy start messed up once and was good to go again after simply taking it apart and cleaning it out. Definitely not a saw you drop start. Good video.

I had the same problem and found out all you need to do is make sure there is no play in the spool. I added an extra thin washer under the clip and it's been working fine for a long time now.
If there's any play the spring pops up and gets tweeked. I guess you don't really need the easy start spring spool, but it was easy to fix once I figured out the problem.
I can say from experience that when the main spring comes out it really ain't no fun.
I had to take the spring out on my chainsaw because the end was broken off so it wasn't working.
I had to fold a new end on the spring and then wind it back up and place it back in it's place.
That's a job I really don't want to do again because I really struggled with it for nearly an hour but I did get it fixed.
I ended up doing this to my BG86c a few months ago. As you say once it's failed it seems to keep failing no matter how gentle you are starting it. Use it nearly every day and no problems since 👍
Great idea to fix a bad design. I have been watching Mick for a number of years and he does a great job as you do. You two are the mowers, blowers and trimmers brain trust. Thanks for the videos.

I work for a Stihl dealer and the issue we see that causes 99% of this problem with the easy start is that the top of the pulley post above the groove for the pawl spring starts to mushroom. When you take the recoil apart and it is hard to get the washer off the post is mushroomed and will keep having this problem if repaired. We sell the customer a new recoil, you'll have a happy customer and a repaired unit.
Good to know, thanks. But how in the hell does that pulley post get mushroomed? If I remember correctly, it's made out of some type of aluminum, but I didn't realize there was any kind of force being directed inwards towards the shaft that would cause it 'shroom out like that.
I did that , $ 75 for recoil ! Bad deal
I always wrap about 3/4 of the string on when I install the pulley .

That was a good one. I needed to see it done. I've done it a bunch of times and always had trouble. I lost that retracting spring a couple times too.
I dealt with the same issue for a long time as well with my customers. They were on backorder earlier this year. It appears that they pulled all available stock and replaced it with new. I'm not sure if these newer springs are better yet, but I haven't had the last few come back to me since then.
I've learned a lot watching your videos. You're a good teacher and a cheery person which makes the watching more fun.
4 a quick at home fix, take the damaged spring out and I use my soldering iron. I melt the 2 pieces together by plastic welding the edges together. Haven't had a problem with any of the blowers or trimmers i've done this 2. Sometimes you can't wait on parts.
I wish that I would of ran across your video sooner, the dealer to me my Stithl weed Wacker was junk, so I bought an echo after doing research. I always like listening to your videos, I have worked on small engines when I was young, now I am old, but I learn new things all the time, Thanks for what you do! GLORY!!!
Good tip. I think the word you were looking for is taut, tout is to advertise, or try to sell something as in "touting his wares". Just a friendly tip back for all the tips you've given us.

I bought one of these from a local Stihl dealer about a year ago - checked it and it is the BG 50. It must be new/old stock, but glad it's the one without the new design.

Thanks for this video. I have one of these Stihl blowers, and I had no idea that’s how it worked. I tried mine today, just pulling the cord without yanking it, and while it didn’t start on the 1st or 2nd try like it did when I just yanked the heck out of it, it did start on the 4th try, using no effort at all. I’m shocked that the dealer did not explain this to me when I bought it. Nice !
i used your tip to slowly pull a few times (just over the first point of resistence) with my Stihl 230, before i really try to start it, and it starts way easier. THANKS.

Worked in a huge yard equipment shop years ago when I was between jobs. Learned a lot about small engines, always had a mechanical ability. Stihl was the hardest brand to start, that is why if still use Echo equipment.

You are GOOD!!! That spring that you didn't want to come out, once one of them came out for me - i like to have drove me crazy getting it back in. I just bought a Stihl MS 170 chainsaw. It doesn't have "easy start" and I'm glad.
Bought a 56c over a 55; dealer said it was easier to start, but never told me the correct procedure. At any rate, six hard pulls after choke & tickle will do it. Can't imagine how many the 55 takes😣. A couple of easy pulls on this, weedeaters & chainsaws & then put it on compression will usually keep from busting fingers.

At the starter rebuild stage, I found it good (maybe just me) to replace the starter handle with a D handle. I started putting them on wildfire saws, but now everything from a mower to blower has one. I can start with gloves on, even put notes not to overpull or not to pull super hard
Agree. I have an MTD snow thrower with a D handle and it makes life much easier, especially with gloves on.
Love the D handle on my ms660!
I scored a Stihl MS230c cheap at an estate sale. Absolutely no sign it had been used. Several guys gently pulled the rope, thought it had no compression and walked. I grabbed it and it has been a great light duty cousin to my MS 290.

C doesn't always mean that the Stihl machine has easy start. They used the C suffix to designate Comfort and that includes 3 completely different features that a machine may have. From Stihl's Technical Reference Guide... "Comfort can have one or more of the following features: Easy2Start™, Quick Chain Adjuster, ElastoStart™" The most often seen Comfort feature is the Elastostart ™. It basically comprises of a spring in the recoil handle that makes it just a little easier to get the engine to start turning.
I absolutely hate the Easy Start and the Quick Chain Adjust. Two answers to something that was never a problem in the first place. I reckon it was just a marketing gimmick for the amateur user.

Several years ago I bought a 56rc trimmer with the easy start and never realized how far stihl had fallen. Easy start failed, the string head failed, I was ready to burn it after six weeks. My father, with the patience of Job, took it to the dealer and they replaced the pull start and string head with parts from the commercial line and its been decent since. Will probably try another commercial brand next time.
My stihl chain saw is completely different. I removed the cover to change it over and found what must be the new and improved version of the easy start.
This kind of reminded me of the time I was up to my left nut cutting my way out of the woods and snapped the pull rope on my saw. 24" of 550 cord later I was back at it. That paracord is still on that saw!

I bought a saw with that system from a neighbor who was moving. I read that you need to pull gently, and doing so, it's worked fine. OTOH, the no-tool chain adjustment is a good idea gone bad. Hopefully the easy start will behave, but thanks for the heads up on the spring.
Have a neighbour that has a so called “easy start”. Frustrating machine. Maybe someday he’ll give it to me and I’ll follow your advice. Great instructional video. I still like my eight year old Stihl with hundreds of hours and cords of wood under its bar and chain(s)…and a few pull cords. Great advice as always. Thanks.

I got a ms250c real cheap and hate the c part so I got a flywheel and pull start and turned it into a regular saw! Also got rid of the ez chain tensioner part! It's now a regular saw and it's lighter as a result! All that ez crap adds weight! Good vid as always!
well there you go. Just by watching this I now know I shouldnt be snatch pulling my starter coil and just gently wind up. I didnt know. Spring is probably already damaged but now I can check it out. Thanks.

I was once rebuilding a Stihl chainsaw with this feature and a sprung spring. Went up to the dealer and bought a new one for $5. Bent the new spring on the first pull. I'll be the first to admit that it was user error, but if you've never experienced one before, you just yank like always and the result is usually a bent spring. I wouldn't say it's a bad design, just that nobody knows how to pull it the right way. I guess that makes it a de facto bad design. Since I still didn't know how to pull it, I bent the spring back as best I could, clamped it, and tack welded the spring windings together. Now being one solid piece, it worked like a standard pull.

I always tell my friends and family not to buy "Easy Start" or as I call it "Never Start" because I have people come in with brand new equipment and broken easy start all the time. It's great to know this fix! I have been turning them away because just like you I changed the spring and their back in less than 2 weeks... This method is perfect in my book! Get rid of the useless gimmick and go with what works!

I always put a half bow knot right at the eyelet to hold the rope while I put the handle on. Then I just had to pull the handle to release the knot.

Stihl is right about sooooo many things, damn near everything actually, but wrong about this. I'm glad there's a way to remove the feature and get a setup that works, even though there's no easy start anymore (which I don't want anyway). My chansaws' decompression valves have been much more reliable in terms of making the start easier without the spring start. In my case it's the 500i (no "C").
Stihl does EVERYTHING wrong. For starters, the fuel tanks with threads inside! What a stupid design. Been in business for 30+ years, tried them all trust me. Stihl has the worst starting issues of ANY handhelds. Even the disposable stuff from the box stores (not that we use those). I’ll take a second hand echo, husqvarna or red max over anything new from

Every time I notice a new post by you about repairing a Stihl or Echo I always watch, just never know when I might run into a problem sometime and with luck id be like wait a minute I think I seen that problem on a Chicanic video. I have a 12-13 year old Stihl HS45 hedge trimmer that's had a ton of use over the yrs and still runs like new, doesn't look new but still runs like new. I also have a old echo weed Wacker that I've had good luck with. I found that staying away from the big box store budget brands, a little PM then the use of non ethanol gas helps extend the life of my equipment. My lucks got to run out sooner or later lol

Thanks for sharing, I have the 86C with the the so called easy pull. There is no way to slow pull my blower, so I end up starting it like a regular pull cord which will break in time I'm sure.

i cut a thin tin plate to go around the inside of that spring between it and the plastic . sticking up a little higher than the plastic as that is where the spring pulls into under tension and it sorted it so no matter how hard you pull it it doesnt twist the spring , when pulling the start there is a small gap which the spring tightens into and can deform ,very bad design

My 32 Y/O Stihl saw seized up on me about a month ago. I went back to the same DLR for warranty but when I asked about it he just looked at me cross eyed! I looked at the new saws and after I picked a length 18" he tried to sell me a C model because I am 68 years young. I tried like crazy to make it work for me because it really sounded like a great idea but after fiddling around for 20 minuets I opted for the regular version. I'm glad I did after watching your video here because that's what I would have ended up doing. I think the C model was another 40$ as well so money saved. That thing has a lot of compression for an older fellow though! But it usually starts on the third pull cold and one pull hot.
The E-Z starts have the primer bulb and the tool less chain tensioner and if you don't use the primer for the cold start you are going to have to pull the cord several more times than a regular starter.The primer is there for a good reason.

I appreciate your channel videos. For this one I have a Question for you. Normally on a recoil I always wrap the rope first. Then place spool into the housing. Then fish the rope out through the notch. Turn the spool/spring one turn. Then feed the rope the tail of the rope through the hole in the housing and tie on the pull handle.
I don’t understand why you’d turn the spool so far til it cannot turn when my above method has always worked well???

There is another fix that is more economical and quicker. I experienced the same problem with my SH86CE and found a solution and the cause of the problem. The spring "butterfly" clip (part # 1128 195 3500) and washer (part # 0000 958 0923) no longer exert enough pressure on the carrier "center pulley" (part # 4241 195 2001) which sits over the spring (part # 4241 195 3501). The carrier-center pulley no longer sat flush over the rope rotor (part # 4241 195 0403). I purchased 2 additional washers, now a total of 3 including the original, to have the carrier-center pulley be firmly on the rope rotor. My blower has been used multiple time now and i've experienced no issues.

I bought a new Stihl 251 chainsaw about 5-6 years ago with the Easy Start. I hated it so much I took it back and had the service guy switch it to a non-Easy Start. It turned out he had just taken in a fried 251 and swapped out the entire plate. I've never regretted dumping the Easy Start.

We have lost all of our good small engine mechanics here in Shreveport. No one seems to hold onto old mowers anymore. I work on my own. I learned at Sears Service Center. I have an old B&S engine I'm working on that the housing and bracket that olds the top on has rusted almost off. I cannot for the life of me find this bracket anywhere, even used. With a lot of work and a lot of zip ties I have it where I can start it now.
Tried finding the model # for the engine but it's a QR code that's scratched up.
