3:30 so both ariana and cynthia personally insisted on singing on set (there's video of both of them doing so - cynthia was singing while HARNESSED and being flung and flipped around flying for defying gravity, which is insane). and lots of the on set noises (perfume bottles spritzing, footsteps, doors closing, etc) are still in the film. but for the general background singers, they actually used much of the broadway supporting cast for those vocals (with original glinda and elphie having a cameo song in emerald city made for this film, along with the writer of the musical having a cameo(as the guard letting the girls in to meet the wizard)). so not only was this film adapted with lots of love and admiration for the broadway musical, but they also directly involved many of those from the broadway show.

I think the truth behind Glinda is really that she is actually deeply insecure and sad. As soon as someone questions her or ignores her (especially if they are powerful) she will change herself so they will like, see, and praise her.
You can see that the best compliment she gets in this film is being called a friend by Elphaba because, let's be honest here, Glinda didn't have any friends before either. She had followers or admirers only.
All of this makes her very easy to manipulate because she just wants powerful people to like her, even if she doesn't really agree with them. Hence her staying behind with Madame Morrible and the Wizard

Back in the Disney animated age of the 1990s, the singing voice was different from the voice actor. For example, in Aladdin, Linda Larkin played Jasmine but Lea Salonga was her singing voice (original Broadway lead of Miss Saigon and still performs and acts as she was in a recent production revival of Once on This Island). Unfortunately, Lea Salonga chose to go uncredited
It's practices like this in Hollywood that would make a person ask of an actor did their own singing. Because back in the days, it wasn't like that.

The name "Elphaba" was Gregory Maguire's nod to the author of "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," L. Frank Baum--hence, L-FA-BA. The Broadway play and the movie were both based on Maguire's book, "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West." He loved watching the "Wizard of Oz" (we ALL did), but he always wondered about the Wicked Witch, and what her story was--so he wrote about it. The book is very dark, and not at all for children, but it is the basis of the play and movie. At first, Maguire was sorry he had agreed to have them write the play, but he "made his peace" with the decision.

I loved your real reactions in real time to what was happening and your respect for the true singers that were casted in this film! Arianna is comedic perfection, and Cynthia is the true soul of the film. Your reaction to Defying Gravity at the end is all of us lol I really hope you react to part two coming out later this year because in my opinion, it’s actually even better than part one.!!

I like the fact that you alluded to part of the movie about the "politics" of Elphaba and Glinda. It's the idea of how to effect change in society. Do you join forces with those who have the power and try to incrementally force changes to society or government (Glinda), or do you cut yourself off and say "tear the whole thing down and start over"(Elphaba). This dichotomy has presented itself throughout human history. It also helps us to look at those deemed evil by our society and try to understand why they did/do the things that defined them as "wicked."

BTW, Cynthia Erivo is one Oscar from becoming an EGOT (and she already got a couple of Academy Awards nominations for the movie Harriet). She already has a Grammy, an Emmy and a Tony. She hasn’t been in “just 2 other things”… She’s really, really good. So yes, maybe you’ve seen her before. 😉

you definitely need to rewatch the Wizard of Oz to catch up with what happened 😂 but in summary:
Dorothy arrives at Oz, Glinda the Good Witch instructs her to follow the yellow brick road to meet the Wizard to get her back home. along the way she meets the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion. in the end, she ends up killing the Wicked Witch (Elphaba) with a bucket of water. the start of this movie shows us Glinda delivering the news and celebrating the death of the Wicked witch.

The thing about why Glinda doesn't go with Elphaba is simple, she isn't strong enough. Think about it, for her entire life Glinda has never had to struggle or fight, she has always been the center of attention, that is all she knows. From the beginning (as Galinda) she wasn't intentionally cruel, she was selfish that is true, however her world view was extremely sheltered and narrow. Elphaba on the other hand, from birth had learned to stand up to injustice because she had been ostracized and as a result she did have that strength. It is that difference that causes them to part ways, Glinda is afraid of change because she is terrified of the unknown.

Oh boy - another reactor that hasn't seen Wizard of Oz. When they created Wicked it was assuming you have seen the Wizard of Oz (because there was a time when it was a movie you watched many times in your childhood) and have at least some familiarity with the main points of that film or you are not getting most of what Wicked is doing (or any of the Easter eggs). This musical (and the book it is based on) is a kind of fan fiction in a way - of them imagining that these are the things that were happening before and during the events of the Wizard of Oz. I would watch the Wizard of Oz before part 2 because it will play an even more important part there.

@@mooglerific there are a lot of factors that went into my comment. One of the main reasons was because when you talk over someone (in-person or on film) you miss certain key words, elements or phrases that could help someone better understand what is going on, this is the main reason! Has NOTHING to do with him live streaming on Twitch! Has nothing to do with if he live streams on YT!
