Turning crystalized honey into liquid easily.

I love honey, but what I don't love about it is that it crystalizes, and all too often just weeks after harvesting it. Over the years, I have employed many different methods and techniques to bring crystalized honey back to its liquid state. Now, after all those years, I have discovered the simplest way of performing this tedious task, and doing it in big fashion.
Not only do I show how I bring the honey back to its liquid state, but then how I move it from the drum to the bottler is a very efficient way, I use a rotary lobe pump. Why this type of pump? It does not aerate the honey causing it to foam.
I realize this is a rather lengthy video, but because I discuss methods and equipment, I thought it relevant to comment on many issues, I hope you will agree. Thanks for watching. God's peace to all. Mr. Ed
The absolute best way to deal with crystalized honey is to spread it on hot toast. It might take a while to get through 55 gallons though :)
Agreed! The stuff spreads like warmed butter. Thanks for watching. God's peace Rob.
Mr. Ed
You are a man after my own heart.
I think I would give a 55 gallon drum the ole college try, given half a chance, lol.
@@labella9291 would never go bad so it would so be worth it lol
@@protectoroffaith Exactly. I could take my time eating my way through it. Might even take me a couple years, lol. But no rush, since it would never go bad, lolol
There should be millions of views on these videos. This was great. Makes me want to be a bee keeper 😄
I love your support, thank you for it. I am very sure you will be a beekeeper in the future if you continue to watch. Thanks for watching. God's peace.
Mr. Ed
I am a Beekeeper here in Michigan. I love crystalized honey. I keep most of my crystalized honey for myself. To me it just tastes better that way.
I always love hearing when folks like their honey in the crystalize state. In truth, it makes no difference weather the honey is solid or liquid , but so many ONLY see honey as being good if it is in the liquid state. I'm on your side, I love it when the honey gets crystalized. God's peace Stan.
Mr. Ed
Think of crystalized honey as candy! 🍬 🍭
I love it when it's about 50/50 crystalized, it has a nice crunch to it when I eat it on bread and it doesnt drip from it
There was a time, before RUclips, before honey houses, before stainless equipment, before lobe pumps, there was a time, you were just like one of us. Now look at you.....big time...
My suggestion to everyone, get yourself 38 monks that pray for you and get ready for things to improve. God's peace brother.
Mr. Ed
@@JeffHorchoff I believe some of your viewers also lend a prayer too. God bless, and as always, your in my thoughts and prayers.
@@rlsingle00 Thanks so much for your prayers and blessings Ricky, they are immensely appreciated. God's peace brother.
Mr. Ed
@@JeffHorchoff well, all joking aside, you have done so well and you, as well as many of us, are so very blessed to be able to do what we do.
@@JeffHorchoff, I certainly believe that prayer does without a doubt work but Mr Ed also revealed another reason in one of his recent videos why he’s so successful, he has the Rooster to consult with!
Very cool Jeff. I'm glad you found a solution to your crystalized problem. I too want to buy only American made products, but they are so hard to find.
I'll bee watching. Thank you Jesus.
I do love coming up with solutions to issues that crop up in our honey house, thank you Jesus for your inspirations! Thanks for watching. God's peace Cheryl.
Mr. Ed
When you said you had 55 gallon barrels of completely crystallized honey my first thought was, "Oh no!" I couldn't imagine how to get it out without scraping it out. Then you explained everything. Wow! Necessity really is the mother of invention. This is so awesome. My husband was very interested in the pump and said that he was impressed with it. He liked the fact that you could open it up and look inside. I find this aspect of the honey business so fascinating. Thank you for sharing and taking us behind the scenes. Merry Christmas to you and your family! May angels attend you all.
I love the challenge of figuring out ways to fix situations that arise in the honey house. Of course, there are many different solutions to the same situation, but this is just my solution for it. Thank you for your blessings, your kindness to my mom, and your Christmas wishes. May you and yours have a blessed Christmas as well. God's peace Stephonie.
Mr. Ed
The funny thing is I LOVE crystalized honey. I even make my own by adding crystalized honey seeds to uncrystalized honey to make more. It's delicious.
Sometime soon I'm going to make creamed honey, which is crystalized honey smashed to a creamy spread. It's AMAZINGLY delicious.
Like yourself, I am a fan of crystalized honey. For me, it makes no difference what state honey is in, it is always great tasting. We will be adding creamed honey to the inventory at the Gift Shop next year, there is a big demand for it. Thanks for watching. God's peace.
Mr. Ed
Hey Jeff to avoid the plastic drum from slipping out of the clamp, once the drum is a few inches off the floor, use a chain attached with an "S" hook to the side of the clamp, wrap it under the drum and back up to the other side of the clamp with another "s" hook. This will cradle the drum from tje bottom and prevent it from slipping down
That is a GREAT suggestion, and I am going to make a chain strap for both the 30 and 55 gallon drums. Thanks so much for your help and for watching. God's peace Roy.
Mr. Ed
@@JeffHorchoff if the chain digs into the plastic drum, you can either use some wood between the chain and drum or a simple round piece if plywood at the bottom.
Your the best jeff! Love watching your channel
@@JeffHorchoff I was going to suggest nylon straps, thinner, less abrasive to the plastic and strong enough to hold 700 lbs. also would fit between the bands and the drum
I remember this qizmo in another video you made. Alot of your newer subs make you compelled to re-visit some topics.
Epoxy some rubber grips or build a base for the barrels with a rigid ring that the barrel can ride in.
My old employer built a jig that went on a skid and he lifts the whole thing with a pallet jack or forks.
We use metal barrels, though different monster entirely.
God's love, mercies and wisdom be with you.
I wrote this before I saw the caster system, Mr.Ed.
Those are nicer than a pallet.
As you were.
Now I want one!
Not yours. That would be covetous.
I have some 4×6 slabs laying around, though. I've seen those casters at Lowe's the other day!
I went with the deluxe model dollies, 5 wheels and a load capacity of 1,000 pounds. Of course I paid for them, almost $70.00 each. Thank you so much for your blessings and for watching. God's peace Reggie.
Mr. Ed
@@gazinta Don't cheap out on the casters, get good ones and you won't regret it later. God's peace brother.
Mr. Ed
@@JeffHorchoff I work at a youth campground. They bought beds and like 30 of the good casters to make chariots out of.
Bed races, basically.
I spent $700 on those things, and they got bored in about 15 minutes.
They're all over the place in the shop, but it was fun to watch them having fun.
That, and I got an eight hour day building those contraptions!
But yeah. We bought the better ones.

Congratulations on purchasing the new pump although I am disappointed in the US companies ignoring your enquiries, home sales are the backbone of any country's economy and I support homegrown UK industry wherever I can, I hear regularly that Chinese companies are really bad in QA and customer service but like yourself, I have experienced the exact opposite and with multiple Chinese companies. One Chinese company (Creality 3D) even sent out free face masks at the start of the pandemic to its customers even though it had been six months since I made my purchase of a 3d printer with them.
It was not just the American companies that ignored my inquires, it was also the European companies as well. I was very sad about that development, but in the end I'm happy with my purchase. This company, FenFan, really turned out to be a great company. Thanks for watching. God's peace Andrew.
Mr. Ed
I try to buy as local as i can for most stuff as well, its a real let down when the local companies have no incentive to help when you are willing to spend money with them.
Rooster doesn't have a lift, he just bear hugs them and picks them up :)
No need fo a bear hug, he just puts one of those watermelon hands around the drum and lift. He can lift 2 drums at the same time enabling him to work twice as fast as me. Thanks for watching. God's peace brother.
Mr. Ed
@@JeffHorchoff I thought the big bad rooster just squeezed the barrel till the honey popped out of the top like a volcano..

I have a quart of honey from a local keeper that works with my wife. Yep, the honey crystalized because we use it during the spring/summer/fall for marinades and such. Well, yea, it crystalized. Thanks to you I remembered I had a Temp Controller (SC-1000) that I built up for controlling a freezer (for a keggerator). I just put it into heat mode, set it for 100F, and using an old cooler and a 25Watt light bulb? Worked a treat. Decrystalized that quart in about 8 hours.

I’ve just been down the same path here in Australia, Jeff. I couldn’t find Australian made, European out of stock l so I reluctantly went Chinese. Took eight weeks, customs and fees stung like a hive of angry bees. But boy oh boy, was it worth the wait. Transferring is now a breeze. Now I’m eyeing off one those drum hoists. Mmmmm.

Thank you so much for your Christmas wishes, may you and yours also receive the same blessings of the season, Merry Christmas Elaine. God's peace always.
Mr. Ed
@@JeffHorchoff I'll be ready.
1) The remelting of anything is based on the surface area of the mass (honey crystals). I would think that each day as more of it melted, you could use the giant paddle to scrape off the sides of the block in the drum allowing the softened honey on the edges to "float away" and expose new surface area to be heated.
2) Or after a couple of days, use the paddle to break up the block so you're melting many smaller blocks rather than one large one.
3) Create a copper 'straw' as it were, and put it into the drum after a few days. Hook it up to the honey pump. Create a copper output tube and run it through a heater (coiled inside of a water heater or fireplace or the wax melting kettle?) and have it discharge back into the drum. Then you'd heat of the honey faster and use it dissolve the crystal honey.
All very good suggestions, and I actually implement 2 of them in our operation. Thanks for your suggestions and for watching. By the way,I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. By the way, I post a new video every Friday morning, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. God's peace Wooody.

Amazing lifter. If you know a metal fabricator, you could talk to them about making a new chain part. Replace the small surface area plastic part with a large bent/rounded rectangle that has rubber attached to the inside surface for grip. The chain is then welded to each side of the plate.
I already have a piece of 1/4 inch rubber matting going all around the inside of the clamp, and the drums still slip. I'm sure there is a way to correct the issue, and your idea is a good one, but for now, I'm sticking to the pump method. Thank you for your suggestion and for watching. God's peace Matt.
Mr. Ed
Jeff, You should add a 2" foam top to that drum it would help keep the heat in.

2 things i thought to write , the one you addressed , was about to write that heat rises . They say 90 % of your houses heat goes through the roof . and the biggest savings is to insulate the attic . . If it had been me I am a lot like don the cheep guy . not that I want to be . You do what you have to. But build a storage room in a corner . and insulate it and a heat source in it . You could probably build a room for that and it would serve 2 purposes , storage and heat all drums at once .

I wonder if a big tank of heated water that could hold a few barrels might be a better process. Like a used hot tub. Or just cut the crystals up and sell them as candy. That blanket takes a lot of patience. We use those blankets up here to thaw out the elderly who stroll out for a copy of the Sunday paper. Have a nice weekend Jeff.
I love the idea of a tank that heats up, it would certainly work, but it still would cost way more than $400.00 to buildit. I was wondering, how often does the Sunday morning patrol make it's rounds? God's peace Joey.

@@JeffHorchoff I was thinking that a water tank or water jacket would be the ticket and can be built and heated for VERY inexpensive. Make the tank out if strong wood (oak), line it with a rubber Matt like a shower liner. Install water ports at top and bottom. Use a typical water pump that they use in a hot water heating system. Run the lines through rhe building to an outside, small wood fired firebox with a copper coil inside. The water would be nice and warm and cost you nothing to run. Running an elec blanket for days on end will be very expensive.

That pump is going to be used very often in our operation. Stay tuned for next weeks video and see how I'm using it on our extractor. The length of time it takes for honey to crystalize is determined by the nectar source, some nectar once converted to honey will crystalize very quickly, and others it takes a bit longer. For our honey which primarily comes from tallow and privet, it takes about 4 to 5 weeks.....even if it has already been decrystilized. Thanks for watching. God's peace Don.
Mr. Ed
I’ve got one of those blankets but for the 5 gallon size and it does work well too. Always wondered when you would get a pump to pump out of a barrel. Seems safer than trying to lift that barrel. Might want to consider getting a 55 gallon rigid siphon attachment for your hose so it goes straight down to the bottom of the barrel. You can find them in stainless or plastic. In a pinch, you could attach some pvc pipe on the end of your hose to put into the barrel. Thanks for this great video.
I am already working on a rigid insertion pipe, it takes 4 hands to do it the way I'm doing it right now. Glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching. God's peace Chris.
Mr. Ed
1:46 Bee cameo! Also, when you took the spoon to the crystalized honey I compared it to ice cream lol.
Bees get into the honey house all the time, and they do love to do a photo bomb every chance they can. I really did look like a spoon going through a drum of ice cream, I had not even made that connection until you mentioned it. Thanks for watching. God's peace Riley.
Mr. Ed
Merry Christmas and happy new year Mr Ed and sometimes you have to do what you need to do
And a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you as well! Yes, sometimes we are all pushed into doing things we would rather not do. Thanks for your understanding and for watching. God's peace Andrew.
Mr. Ed
Might want to get a few thermal blankets and wrap them around the drum and lid as well, so that you do not lose so much heat into the room. Will reduce the power used to warm the honey by a lot, and shorten the time as well. Will also help keep the drum warm while you do the others, so you can keep it from crystallising again.
You will find the US companies just take that exact same Chinese made pump, and simply place their own label on it, to change the origin, plus they also make a mark up on it as well. So your price was probably around 30% less overall, even with a single purchase, as you likely had a special one made for you. The US motor is a common export item in China, and as the motor sizes are very much going to conform to an IEC motor size specification, they simply order the motor and gearbox with the appropriate ratings, and put it on the machine after testing with the Chinese standard motor and gearbox, and rely on the reduction box ratio to be correct. The Chinese motors can be hit or miss, but are generally pretty reliable if you pay for a good quality one, and they do work well enough. Cheap you get what you pay for, but the mid and higher range is as good as the rest of the world quality wise.
The reason the Chinese get downrated is because companies buying there only care about price, so if they only want a low price, and not quality or reliability, then that is what they will get. Want good quality, and not overpriced cheap junk, you can get it, but expect to pay nearly the same price as quality costs. If you are buying for less than the material cost you know corners are going to be cut.
Your comment about the pumps, motors, and cutting corners makes total sense, thank you for sharing them. As far as getting more thermal blankets, due to the cost, I'm simply staying with the moving blankets, it worked really well. Thanks so much for your comment and for watching. God's peace Sean.
Mr. Ed
@@JeffHorchoff You just have to buy what are colloqually referred to as "space blankets" those thin metallised mylar sheets you go camping with. Cheap, and you wrap the drum with one on the outside loosely, and another on top. They reflect the heat back in, so the drum stays hot for longer. I never go camping without at least one, as they are so effective, you just have to cover the sleeping bag loosely with one to stay warm all night long.
I bet that smell is incredible
To bad I could not capture that on the video......delicious! Thanks for watching. God's peace Chloe.
Mr. Ed
Missing your removals bud! Happy winter!!! -the city girl ash
There's a removal video coming up right after Christmas, stay tuned. God's peace Ash.

You ain't kidding about 8-9 days. I received a powerblanket on 11/30/20. I got the 5 gallon model with the notch for the spigot. Even after a week it wasn't completely de-crystalized. I drained my bucket 3 times to finally get it all de-crystalized.
After putting the moving blanket over the blanket, it really stared working great. I'm not saying you should do it, but it worked for me. Thanks for watching. God's peace David.
Mr. Ed
@@JeffHorchoff Next time I will add the moving blanket. I will also add the moving blanket when bottling honey now too. Merry Christmas Mr. Ed.
I've got one of the 5gallon pail versions that they make called "Bee Blanket" for specifically that purpose. I also put a sheet of styrofoam under the bucket and a bunch of towels on top to help keep the heat within the bucket itself.
The honey I have in my area gets much more firm than yours though. No way I could have done anything except bend a spoon if I had tried to scoop it.
The honey blankets work very well, and I now put a blanket over the top to keep the heat in. The drums are off the ground by about 3 inches due to the wheels under the dollies. Thanks for watching. God's peace.
Mr. Ed
Merry Christmas Mr Ed
Thank you very much, and a very blessed Christmas to you and yours as well Tim. God's peace.
Mr. Ed
Have a great weekend Friend!
And you too, stay warm. God's peace.
Mr. Ed
Keep up the work nice video thank you.
Line the inside with a rubber sheet glued to the inner face all thewayaround. The additional friction would assist the clamping mechanism. Speaking of which, as the compression is relatively uniform around the circumference it shouldn't be able to deform the drum enough for it to move through. The drum seems to have a couple of ridges above and below the central area. Just a couple of observations. Nice video as usual. Take care of yourself.
I have an 8 inch wide and 1/4 inch thick rubber mat lining the inside edge of the clamp, but even with that, the drums still slid down. The ridges do stop it from slipping past them. Glad you enjoyed the video, Thanks for watching. God's peace Roy.
Mr. Ed
Mr. Ed, I saw on another channel I watch, an attachment you can get for your phone, to turn it into a FLIR phone. Its ingenious. You should check it out.
When I was looking to purchase a thermal camera, I checked into the app for using your phone for the application. For me, having a tool just for the purpose, the Flir camera, was a better fit. Thanks for your suggestion and for watching. God's peace Shawna.
Mr. Ed
I really wish I could be a bee keeper. But we cannot. a family a block away from us raised bees for 2 generations. Then killer bees came to Arizona. Now that family had to stop raising bees. The killer bees came in and they had to be distroyed along with his bees. So sad. So glad you are able to keep bees and have honey. God bless.
im no bee keeper nor do i wanna bee lol but love honey and that process is super cool to watch would live some of that honey greeting from nyc
I have a buddy in NY city, Tom Wilk, that keeps bees on roof tops, and he sells his local honey. Get in touch with him at Wilk Apiary and let him know I sent you. I think he sells his honey as " Zip Code Honey" as each building has it's own zip code. Thanks for watching. God's peace Ellen.
Mr. Ed
Interesting! I had no idea that crystallised honey could be such an issue...mind you, I really only deal with jars, not 55 gallon drums!
With the proper equipment, any job is possible. Thanks for watching. God's peace Stephanie.
Mr. Ed
great video
Happy to hear you enjoyed it, thanks for watching. And in case you did not know, I post a new video almost every Friday morning, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. God's peace.
Mr. Ed
🐝I could only hope to have this problem in the future☺ Much love Mr. Ed.
Don't you worry brother, that day will arrive for you as well. God's peace.
Mr. Ed
Mr. Ed you will learn to pull that "pickup hose" out of the honey sooner and then the pump will push all of the honey out of the intake hose and the pump for you. Then you can disconnect the output hose and drain like you did. Not sure if the pump will push that out because air compresses too much. That should take care of your spillage. Also might be a good idea until you get more practice to have a second container beside you to transfer the output hose into if you misjudge the pull out point. Looks like a great system but you just need some practice on the timing. Season's blessing to you and yours. Hope mom is doing fine.
Great tip on getting the honey out of the hose and pump, I will give it a try. Thank you for that, for asking about mom, who is fine, and your Christmas greetings. Merry Christmas to you and yours as well and for Happy New Year as well! God's peace Mark.
Mr. Ed
Nice , but I cover it from giving heat to enviroment by covering it with washing mashine shell.
I used also garege heater 240 volts. Works good. Best wishes
It's always a great thing to discover what works for you and perfect it. Thank you for your kind words and for watching. God's peace Jan.
Mr. Ed
The pump design is well known - it is the same as a Roots blower for air, which is used to supercharge the air on dragsters.
I knew it was a fast pump, but not that fast. God's peace.
Mr. Ed
@@JeffHorchoff Obviously, it does not spin as fast as an air blower, but the functioning is the same.
Well said Mr. Ed! Buy American (if you can) AND like you said when you consider ALL the cost, maybe it isn’t all that cheap to by the foreign equipment!😊
The whole issue of buying American is a very sensitive one and rightly so, and because I want to support our local and national economy, I'd prefer to buy American. However, if the choice is not available, as it was in my particular case, I went the route that was available to me. By the way, the pump works great and I am very pleased with it. Thanks for watching. God's peace Hubert.
Mr. Ed
as i said before in another video you did on crystalized honey ..HONEY POWDER.. excellent for sweetener for coffee, tea's, or baked goods.
For me and many others, the state of honey, liquid or crystalized, makes no difference, it still tastes great! Thanks for watching. God's peace Dustin.
Mr. Ed
If you are on a budget, an electric blanket wrapped around with a comforter [duvet for Europeans] or water cylinder jacket around that for insulation would work. Be sure to have a power trip switch on the power supply as you won't be watching it 24/7. Even under-floor heating mesh or heating cable intended for propagation tables would work.
The great thing about using the type of heater I used is the temperature never exceeds 100 degrees which will never change the make up of the honey. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my over 450 bee wrangling/ bee rescue adventure videos and let me know what you think of them. By the way, I post a new video almost every Friday morning, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. God's peace Samantha.

Great video. I suspect that you licked the honey off of those spoons, right? lol
Merry Christmas to you and your family. Take care. Stay safe. God bless.
Of course I did, not sense in wasting any honey. Merry Christmas to you and yours as well Rose Mary. Thank you for your blessings and for watching. God's peace.
Mr. Ed
Brother Jeff,
When looking at your honey house, I can't help but wonder..how much is invested in all that very nice equipment? Everything attached to the food production /service industry is priced through the roof. You've got a building full of the best on the market. Does the abbey have a yearly budget allotted for the apiary and honey production or is it simply covered by sale of honey products and/or donations? Not being nosey but I think it would be a very worthy thing to support with gifts and offerings. May God's blessings be upon you all. Merry Christmas!
Hey Mark, the entire Abbee Honey Program is run on donations and sales. God has blessed our operation, and the entire abbey as well, since the flood back in 2016 when so much was lost and there was over 33 million dollars in damage done. Merry Christmas to your and yours as well brother, and may God's peace always reign in your heart.
Mr. Ed
Hi Mr Ed, a question that isn't completely related to the video, but have you ever noticed any difference in honey because of the container it has been in? Like plastic bottles or glass or metal or clay? Or wood? Thanks Mr Ed, no rush to reply. Love the passion you have and the way you share it.
I'm sure there are some differences in the way different types of containers can effect the honey, but since those small differences do not affect our operation, the plastic drums suit my need perfectly. Thank you for your kind words and for watching. God's peace.
Mr. Ed
honey pumped through a roots blower, i like it.
