Great journey review Rory. Brilliant job capturing the excitement of the trains arrival at Yass Junction. Big shoutout to the employee who recognised you & your script writer for the inclusion of the dry humour. 👍
I live in Canberra and recently travelled to Melbourne by train. I caught the midday train to a Goulburn, stayed overnight then caught the XPT departing at 10:13am arriving in Melbourne about 20minutes late as there was track work happening on the outskirts oh Melbourne. On the return journey I went by train to Yass then by bus from there. I really enjoyed the journey, great scenery and very comfortable and spacious.
I badmouth Australian trains so much because they're soo slow, but they're still my preferred method of transport. You're spot on in my opinion that there are faster and cheaper ways, but nothing beats just watching the scenery pass on a train 😊 Edit: another option is for the night one is take the Explorer to Goulburn, have a nice dinner there and wait around a few hours. Get into Melbourne the next morning, giving a whole day in Melbourne and not having to pay for a hotel for a night 😂 Yet another slow option is vline out through the Gippsland. Takes a few hours longer, but an option is to spend a night or two in one of the towns along the way. Definitely the most beautiful of all the routes. If you're super energetic, spend almost a week hiking the rail trail down in the east Gippsland area. Not hard terrain but takes a fair bit of work just because of the distance and having to carry what you need to survive 🤣
Another great RD vlog…Hamish the seat stealer. I loved train travel in Ireland. You can book your seat, when you board its on a small screen above your seat.
NSW TrainLink has resumed booking every seat and sleeping berth. It has excellent Discovery Passes available offering unlimited travel on its extensive rail and connecting road coach network, stretching from Melbourne to Sydney and Brisbane. First class prices are A$300 for 14 days to a bargain A$550 for six months' travel. The switches at around 7:00 are for the night lights to one's seat.
Thanks for the video! I've seen my dorm in your vids where I lived and studied almost 10 years ago! It instantly reminds me a day when I was studying in ANU. Cheers mate!
G’day from Canberra! Thanks for showing some of our best views from the Commonwealth Ave bridge :) I now know I can catch the Yass bus from the city. Looking forward to retracing you steps to Melbourne in June. 👍🏼
Ive seen a snail overtake Metro trains in Melbourne during peak hour especially on the line to Western Suburbs its atrocious!! Another awesome review, appreciate the effort to include the connections and how you get to the train or plane certainly much more helpful if thinking about that journey. Always a fantastic high quality review. 👍
Thanks for sharing the video, love it Rory. I live in Canberra but work in Melbourne, normally I travel with greyhound night bus and never thought there's train service between CBR and MEL, definitely will give it a try once lockdown finish.
Congrataulations Rory on another interesting and detailed train check. I last visited Australia in the 1980s and these XPT trains must have been in service at that time. However I wasn't brave enough, at the time to take the train, so opted for Ansett (this was in 1984). Seeing your video made me realise what a comfortable and civilised way train travel can be on this route. Yes those XPT's are ancient by today's mainline standards in Europe but they have much charm and are kept in very good condition. I liked the display in the buffet car but in Europe passengers wouldn't want to wait *one hour* for a hot meal to be prepared ! I ought to mention that the UK's 125 InterCity trains are now mainly restricted to Scotrail (the rail operator within Scotland) and they will be in service for a good few years yet. The main 125 InterCity operators are all withdrawn their trains from service to be replaced by new Hitachi trains which are built at Hitachi's UK factory or in Italy.
I wouldn't be so sure about the future of ScotRail's HSTs. Neither the leading power car nor the carriages performed well during the Stonehaven derailment. The unions are agitating for their withdrawal, and I suspect their days are numbered.
@@nkt1 Hello nkt1 - I agree but note I made my comments above two months *before* the Stonehaven derailment. Besides Scotrail there are also a few HSTs used by GWR for local services in the West Country. Am not certain whether or not Cross Country still operates HSTs.
@@alexmcwhirter6611 Fair enough :-) Yes, CrossCountry is still operating a dozen Class 43s. Apparently they operate mainly on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
Hi Rory, I enjoy your video's. I think also from Cootamundra there is a bus connection all the way to Mildura in north west Victoria. The bus almost takes longer to get to Mildura than the train takes from Sydney to Cootamundra. Also, you forgot to mention the bus connections from Wagga and Albury. Nevertheless you did a good job of selling that almost 40yo XPT train.
A fabulous video, it would be easier to just catch a coach but this seems like a good and more comfortable way to do it! Also, at 16:07 that is the AK Cars, possibly the same ones I saw a few days ago around Melbourne.
I love your comment about trains rarely travelling faster than cars 🤣🤣 Its so true!! After using trains extensively in Asia Australia has a long way to go (pardon the pun)
I’d only travel in premium class if I ever gonna do Ghan or Indian pacific (the gold class cabin looks similar to the XPT, the dining car looks similar to spirit of the outback, so I don’t find gold class attractive). But the premium class costs almost $8000 so unfortunately I’m not gonna do it in the foreseeable future 😂

Because it is flatter and not so windy. From wagga you climb into the deviding ranges and that’s it to Sydney. Also Sydney all the way to Brisbane and on to Cairns. That’s why we don’t have high speed trains.
The vent looking thing are actually the reading lights. It might be because they were broken. Passengers do not have control of the a/c. The a/c vent runs the length of the carriage next to the overhesd light in the middle isle
Apparently in the past one platform at Albury had a standard gage line while the other platform had a broad gage line due to how back then the line was broad gage in Victoria and standard gage in NSW. So back then you would have to change trains as Albury until the line in Victoria was converted to standard gage! :)
I use to travel the XPT between Sydney to Junee on my own when I was 12 and 13 years old. From Junee, a train/bus off to rellies. It's not a bad train. It was supposed to be replaced by now but no government has planned to replace them so they need overhauls to keep them working at their age.
This is an excellent review Rory and I now wonder if the extra cost for first class is actually necessary. The coach stop in Canberra looks a little disappointing and does not appear to offer any shelter from the weather. I think when booking online there should be an option to pre order a meal. Another option would be for the coach driver to take meal orders and forward them to the train. We sometimes fall short in Australia with the standards of travel offered.
First class isn’t necessary in my opinion that’s why I didn’t book first class, The coach stop is pretty much just a city bus stop, there’s a bws not far from the stop so if it rains you can wait the bus there And yeah I agree, that would be really nice if the coach driver could forward the meal orders to the train!
The coach stop used to be in the Jolimont Centre on Northbourne Ave (where the V-line coach leaves from) but I understand the NSW rail connection bus moved as a cost saving measure.
@@RoryDing Pre-Covid, I used this service to/from Wagga Wagga quite a lot. There was always an announcement after Yass for a hot meal service on the Canberra/Melbourne leg. Yeah that’s what I thought!! That’s why I was waiting for the announcement! I asked the crew in the buffet why they didn’t make an announcement they said they make announcement at 11 Please let me know if they made an announcement on your trip to Wagga next week!
The British InterCity 125 trains have been phased out and replaced with less comfortable trains, although these are capable of the same speeds and most of them can run with diesel power or electric from the overhead catenary.
Hello skin150263, There's some confusion here. The UK's InterCity 125 trains are diesel power only. There never has been an electically-powered variant. I suspect you are confused by the new Hitachi trains (now in service with GWR/LNER/TPE/Hull Trains) which are bi-mode (they can operate with either diesel or electric power).

That damn roundabout with traffic lights. It's ok when you get used to it, but when you are new to it, despite the lights saying green, you feel like slowing to give away like a roundabout. I recall seeing this coach, and the VLine one to Melbourne, a few times during the near daily runs to Canberra I was doing throughout March. A month I'm glad is over. If I never see Canberra again, it'll be too soon (dad had 6 weeks of 5 days/week radiotherapy at the hospital...and I was his driver from Boorowa).
It is a shame there isn't more "fast" rail services like the XPT, it doesn't even need to be TGV kinds of speeds just anywhere from 150kph+ on big sections and it would be good, With some track work Adelaide to Melbourne for example could be serviced by something in sensible times that would only put it a couple of hours behind flying and the shenanigans of the airport at both ends.
Hi Rory Love train journeys but at the moment I have a small dog and frets when I go away so I have to drive to my destinations Apparently years ago XPT use to carry pets in cargo section I have done the Indian Pacific and Ghan train trips I've seen your videos on those I was lucky to do a month's trip getting on and off and seeing all the main attractions in every state I haven't been to Vic yet ! I'm thinking of doing this trip from Sydney to Melbourne will I be able to catch the XPT straight back ? I'm sure my little dog will be ok for an overnite stay at my sister's 😁 Have you got a special app on your phone as I noticed you checked the places and times on your phone Oh I did the Qld Spirit trip from Bris to Cairns before I had my dog and went first class You must do that one The service in there is amazing second best after In.Pacific and Ghan Cheers Thank you
18:23 Hang on, what date was this trip, because a few weeks ago I was catching a vline back from Swan Hill and saw an xpt in exactly that spot at around that time. Would be funny if it was that train 😂
@@RoryDing oh haha, I meant to say specifically at that bridge at the timestamp, because I remember looking behind my vline and seeing an xpt coming down the bridge
Unfortunately the days of constructing beautiful architectural stations such as Albury and Seymour in this vision are long gone. Today's modern stations have NO character....a true reflection of the politicians and executives that are in charge. Also some good history to read up on the Spirit of Progress (Melbourne to Sydney) and the wonderful Southern Aurora (about which a good Aussie song was composed). You will learn about the standardisation of the States rail gauges in the process.

I'm sure my little dog will be ok for an overnite stay at my sister's 😁 Have you got a special app on your phone as I noticed you checked the places and times on your phone Oh I did the Qld Spirit trip from Bris to Cairns before I had my dog and went first class You must do that one The service in there is amazing second best after In.Pacific and Ghan Cheers Thank you
I will do the spirit of Queensland in just a few days!
18:23 Hang on, what date was this trip, because a few weeks ago I was catching a vline back from Swan Hill and saw an xpt in exactly that spot at around that time. Would be funny if it was that train 😂
All dates are in the description 😃
28 March
The XPT always uses platform 1 at southern cross 😂
@@RoryDing oh haha, I meant to say specifically at that bridge at the timestamp, because I remember looking behind my vline and seeing an xpt coming down the bridge
You didn’t mention that NSW Trainlink also services Brisbane.
Now this is a buffet meal on the menu.
Welcome to New South Wales at Yass Junction!
Other than the hot meal, there also meat pies, sausage rolls, fruit salad, sandwiches, and more buffet.
BTW the trip is similar to the Prospector (Perth to Kalgoorlie) in as much as the scenery has many wheat silos at places.
Yes I’m planning to travel on the Prospector in July!
And now this is a delay for a XPT Service to Melbourne Southern Cross at Yass Junction.
"I don't want to miss a second Of The scenery" 2 second later misses more than one second Of The scenery
Good. Thanks Rory. Aussie Bob
XPT Service is a high speed train for 160km/h.
Hello I been on I train iwhent too borwal it's on the way to sydney
Are you going to do the first ever Canberra to Sydney Rex flight?
Technically It’s not first ever, Rex did it before in the early 2000s
I’m busy on the 19th so unfortunately I won’t be able to make it 🙁
They absolutely do not change the meal options. I take the XP’T every few months and it’s always the same
It used to be roast chicken now it’s roast pork
Used to be Thai green curry now yellow curry
@@RoryDing I've never had them have chicken. The only change I've seen has been from having yellow AND green curry to a curry and beans, and that was a few years ago
check out my other XPT video filmed in Dec 2020 go to 9:05 ruclips.net/video/WrXUf0Q7pUM/видео.html
This is a Roadcoach bus to Yass Junction.
Ollie was killing you at Goulbourn
😂
@@RoryDing why did you hearted me
The switches are for the lights ma dude
was it smooth from albury to melbourne?? now that the upgrade is done??
Yeah it was quite smooth!
Wonder why you did not get the train from Kingston ACT to Goulburn NSW to meet the Sydney - Melbourne XPT?
If You want to catch the XPT from Goulburn you have to catch the xplorer from Canberra at 6:55
Vs
The coach leaves Canberra at 9:37 :)
Its a considerably longer trip. I do this trip a lot, its a wonderful trip.
Why is no one talking about the xtrap at craigieburn?
Did you mess with the colour settings?
Is there a way to book a window seat?
Do you know, if they allow push bikes on those buses & train?
Hi Venkat you can find the information here: transportnsw.info/travel-info/using-public-transport/regional-booking-travel-information/luggage-on-nsw-trainlink
