I built one of these the other day and got 8 minutes with just 3 hand spins on the outter ring then placing it on its side where there’s less friction. I think mine would blow 13 minutes out the water with compressed air. Could imagine 18 minutes is possible when assembled correctly!

If you heat heat bearing up, it will expand and you wouldn't have to pound them in with a hammer. As it cools, the bearing will shrink onto the smaller bearing. Repeat until complete.

Why remove the oil? Wouldn't that cause more friction and therefore slow it down?

No it actually is less friction without oil
You only need oil if there is a load on the bearing like a heavy weight if the bearing is being used in a rollerblade tire... if there is no heavy load on the bearing its better less friction without the oil
is not oil, but grease, for a short time bearings are faster without grease, but if you want use bearings for a long time, bearings needs lubrificant..

Suuure, I like this and my recommendations will get spammed with this bullshit toy. Forget it!
On a positive note, if you left the covers and grease in all but the smallest bearing, you would have gotten an even better time. The larger bearings don't come into play at all and the exposed balls increase drag. They are there only for the weight.

Nowadays some real inexpensive spinners can get incredible spin times. A cheap 14 dollar Atesson fidget spinner that I bought on Amazon did a 13:55 hand spin out of the bag on it's first spin. Others get times that are less than that however for this particular spinner model.

it's just a gyro. add more weight and it will spin even longer, nothing surprising but nice DYI experiment.
one advice, put a peace of wood on the bearing when you hit on it with hammer otherwise you might damage it.

I noticed you removed all the grease, but have you lubed the bearings? Try rinsing the bearings with WD-40 and test again.

Instead of using a metal hammer, I think it would be better to use a rubber mallet next time as it's less likely to damage the metal in a case like this. Just letting you know :D

The more layers pf bearings you have, and the better oiled/greased they are, the longer it will spin.

Why did you remove the seals and lubrication - especially from the centre bearing?
Try adding a light lubricant (nowhere near as thick as the packed grease) in the centre bearing and replace the seals - I'm sure that you'll find with even less frictional resistance between the ball bearings and the races, the spinner will continue spinning for even longer.

Drifting in a bearing like that with a hammer ruins the races - you'll get longer spin times if you use a press and ensure all dust and dirt is removed - higher quality bearings (expensive) with zero preload are probably the best candidates
Keep going until the bearings are as big as a house! They would spin for eternity! Maybe that’s what galaxies are! Giant bearings spinning! That’s the meaning of it all!
