- This match will not be remembered for the football, or Aston Villa's performance. This was all about the experience of a big occasion at the home of a big traditional club. Pete the Canadian Villa fan dreams of the days when this is a regular occurance, while picking through the scraps of what was a very untidy, and ragged performance by the visitors. Credit to the young hosts, as they appear to be in a rebuilding phase with high potential and high pressure. Big thanks to Senior Correspondent Samir Gaibee....who rolled camera both inside and outside the ground in what was a memorable away day for the travelling support. Job done exactly. With one eye on Spurs, that was a perfect conservative performance. Could have nicked it near the end to, but for a magnificent block. Ajax may have been a bit slack in the Dutch league this season but they’re are growing fast again.
I needed a joint to watch that game. Sheesh!

Regarding Big Tim, remember a younger Dougie constantly giving away free kicks in his first season, and he turned out ok didn't he. Trust Unai and UTMV
100% agree with you. Ive been making that point regarding other players. Like Diaby and Bailey it takes time for players to adjust.
Great show Pete. The passion, the humour, the analysis. Keep up the good work. Not our best performance (but definitely OK result and could have been worse if not for Emi's world class saves) - Villa Park will hopefully be a different kettle of fish, although I'm slightly concerned we drew 0-0 with Chelsea not so long ago in the cup and then in the Villa Park replay, we lost 0-3. We need to be on our A game for Spurs and Ajax. Greetings from B24. 💜💙
Yet another very good show Pete. Interesting that you seem to be the only one who has picked up on Ezri Konsa’s lack lustre performance. Right from the early minutes he was off the pass. He’s good when we are looking to strengthen the back line but progressive passes forward don’t exist. Keep up the good work.

The ref was genuinely awful. One of the worst I've seen. This competition has given us some very good refs. But this one should not be officiating matches of this size.
Ajax pressed us high in the first half. We needed calm heads in defence and the pivot to pass through it. We missed McGinn and Kamara, I'm afraid Iroegbunam wasn't up to the job. The front players could have held it up better too.
Not a masterclass performance but that was to be expected considering the personnel out on the grass.
Overall it's job done and credit to Unai Emery again. He really knows what not to do, and that was to try and go full guns and win with a weak, injury ravaged, weakened side with a big domestic game ahead.
0-0 sets us up for the second leg. Roll on Sunday.

Great show Pete as always, thank you. Quite a strange game against Ajax. The other AVFC podcast previews were saying they are a poor team these days and I was expecting our lads to dominate possession etc.. but it didn't turn out that way at all. Squad rotation inc a couple of rookies in our midfield partly explains and as does the noisy home support having an energising affect on the home team's aggressive pressing tactics. Liverpool caused us problems at the start of the season with a similar approach. However the tough mentality of Unai's Aston Villa saw us through, we always seem to find a way, and 0-0 is absolutely fine, particularly as there are no longer any away goal rules in UEFA competitions. Interested to hear Canadian clocks go forward this weekend, three weeks earlier than UK. Bracing myself for a hell of a rollercoaster against Spurs, where are my heart tablets? 😂

Man are we having a TERRIBLE season, worst I ever seen in 35 years at least as u remember it.
Sad to say we'd have signed for a 0-0 before match start, against the #4 Premier league team.
Man from 1-4 in Bernabeu in the Champions league to 0-0 against Villa in the conference league.

Well I not the person who said I told you so but I told you so about spurs. And I told you that we will be beat again by Ajax and I bet you that villa will finish 6th.
Konsa's 2nd yellow was a joke. Don't like to criticize the refs, but this one was atrocious- all over the place. Inconsistent. We never got out of 2nd gear- exactly what was expected. Spurs is the focus. Vs Ajax, we couldn't string 3 passes together. Basically a rubbish game. Tim has no first touch and Rogers is great going forward, but defensively nowhere.
