  • Bristol City earn a valuable point against a strong Everton side although a bit disappointing since they had the lead twice. Gerry Gow and Norman Hunter score for City while England striker Bob Latchford gets a brace for Everton. Everton's Dave Thomas is sent off in the 2nd half.

Gerald Sindstat. With Barry Davies, the best football commentator ever.

Remember that Norman Hunter left footer, watching from the East End. Remembered the final score too as I began to watch this. Drives my wife mad how I can remember these details from 45 years ago but can easily forget the name of our new neighbours (or anything like that) !

The Gordon Lee era was never really appreciated by some fans who still remembered the great Everton sides in the previous decade. This Everton side competed well in the FA Cup and finished with a European place in 1977-78. When Imre Varadi somehow missed an open goal late in the 6th round of the FA Cup when leading 2-1 v Man City in 1981, it spelled the end for Gordon Lee, a late equaliser for City saw them win the replay .
Gerry Gow, here with Bristol, had joined City and scored at Goodison in the first game.
Everton lost 9 of the 11 games left in 1980-81 dropped down the league table, and Gordon was sacked.
Funnily Everton's No 10 here, was Mickey Walsh who had just joined from Blackpool in 1978, for a big fee.
He had won goal of the season with Blackpool which had raised his profile
He made no impact at Everton and was sold later that season, and replaced by Peter Eastoe a very underrated forward. Howard Kendall replaced Gordon Lee, in August 1981 and wrote himself into the tapestry of Everton's history

Should have put it to VAR? Interesting that an indirect free kick was given inside the box, never see that nowadays. I think the interpretation of accidental handball was more generous in those days than now with all the video replays,

Kevin never quite lived up to his potential although he did score a hat-trick at Old Trafford once!
