My favorite fellow Marine is Bea Arthur. She was a truck driver in the Corps like me. I found out in tech school that since women were allowed in Motor Transport (Motor T), that a woman has graduated in the top three of every class. I am proud to say that I am one of those women. God bless our marines. Reading the stories of our 13 service members who died in Afghanistan made me tear up all day. They were so young and vibrant. Our best.

It's interesting that almost half of those Marines were/are also actors. On a sad note, we lost Don Everly of the Everly Brothers just three days ago.

Trivia Moment: The tune which took over when John Phillip Souza was shown is his composition "The Washington Post March", which was about the U.S. Marine posting, not the newspaper.
Except Dan Rather was not a Marine. He did not graduate Boot Camp. He was discharged when they found out he had Rheumatic Fever in childhood.
You May not be aware but the oldest photo of a man named John Philip Sousa was the conductor of the Marine Corps President’s Own Band. He was also the composer of the music in this video, a march titled Stars and Stripes Forever.
A lot pictured here are in my dad's age group, part of the Greatest Generation. My dad enlisted in the Navy the year he graduated high school and just after Pearl Harbor. He was 17 yrs old.
Lee Marvin, actor in many action & war movies. Is laid to rest in Arlington. How did he wish to be remembered?

John Glenn, perhaps the most famous of all the astronauts outside of Neil Armstrong. (first to walk on the moon) Glenn is famously known as first to orbit the earth. (1962) But, props to you for knowing so many other Yanks. I take it the U.K. is inundated with American entertainment ?

If you like sharks, watch the Shaq does Shark Week episode from Discovery. It has Rob Riggle and they really use his marine background for some comedy during the episode. My younger kids absolutely love that episode from Shark Week and watched it multiple times.
I highly recommond watching Parent Trap and M.A.S.H. I used to watch Parent Trap 1 and 2 all the time as a kid. M.A.S.H. is full of jokes.

That was cool... I surprised with Drew Carey, the Everly Brothers, Johnthan Winters.....Winters in any branch of the military would be like having Robin Williams as a bunk mate!!!!😱. I didn’t realize Everly passed away...rip.
Winters was in my Dad's fraternity at Kenyon College after the war. Here's just one story: he and some other brothers got drunk as hell one night and dismantled a local roller coaster. Think he was eventually expelled from the college.

@@debbiesenatore5433 He's passed like most of the Greatest Generation, but here's the earliest thing I remember him telling me: Winters entertaining the guys at a frat party (imitating FDR's voice) "My fellow Americans, I've spent $1 million dollars building a bridge in Columbus, Ohio. I will now spend $4 million building a river underneath it." PS: Paul Newman also pledged the fraternity and did the guys' laundry as part of his hazing ritual. :)

Just my humble opinion, but I don't believe that we should ever have a sitting president, vice president, secretary of state or any other high ranking political office who has not served at least a minimum 4 year term in the U.S. military. How can you be the literal commander in chief of the armed forces if you have never served. How can you make decisions of state that affect the life and death of servicemen and women if you have never been in their shoes (Hilary Clinton, are you listening?)
