  • Horse has become a bully! what can i do to help? Here a heavy coloured cob has become very difficult and even biting and knocking into his handlers, he refuses to be taken to his stables from the field.. lots of work to be done here and hopefully we can make a good change

      I now watch these transformations in horse and rider with nostalgia for I spent the first half of my life riding as much as I possibly could. At age 14, I found myself the proud owner of a neglected swaybacked Thoroughbred. By then I instinctively did a lot of what Steve talks about. That dear horse looked after me as much as I looked after him. At 16, I was a trail guide with 40 horses. And such became my relationship to all horses and animals in general. We got along fine. Personalities and all. How wonderful it is to relate to other species with mutual respect and indeed LOVE.

My farrier has always said she has great Hardy back feet therefore no need to put back shoes on and she has never been sore or lame but you mentioned something about only having front shoes on in this video. She is heavy on the front but I was always told its due to her been a cart horse in the past. Please would you give me your input on this. I'd really appreciate your advice.

    These are links to the type of microphones and wind muffs you will need to purchase in order to record when it's windy out. The mini wireless lapel microphones (you guys would need at least 2, one for Steve and one for the owner, more if you have additional guests/customers) will clip onto, for example; Steve's shirt and this way the phone will record his voice MUCH clearer and louder, and then the Wind Muffs (they look like mini versions of the poofs on top of some winter hats) will block the wind from blowing agaisnt the actual microphone. This way we can hear everyone's voices and no more wind!!!
    I think almost all of your viewer would gladly donate to a GoFundMe or other fund raiser in order to pay for these items!! They're not uber expersive and they will only enhance our viewing experience!! Plus, no one wants to miss any of Steve's AH-MAZE-ING advice!!!
    Hope this info helps!!! I'll put links in the replys of this comment!!!

    Jimmy is gorgeous. He's just fed up cos he's trying to tell his owner stuff and no-one is listening. Once she starts doing the stuff that Steve tells her Jimmy is going to really step up. He is going to start believing that you might be worth getting to know. Those cobs are so damn smart. Once you start asking him in a language he understands he will try so hard to do what he thinks you want. If he gets it wrong it's not cos he's stupid or stubborn. If he tries but isn't doing what you want at least he is trying. You need to adjust how you ask.

    • @kaylahanson8853
      @kaylahanson8853 2 года назад +5

      He knows some of the things he is being asked to do, such as simply walking forward. But he is indeed being stubborn and refusing to do what he is asked, simply because he does not see his owner as a leader, does not respect her and knows he can get away with things by simply stopping and refusing to move forward. Once he sees her as a leader and respects her, then he will start trying and doing the things that are asked of him or that he is being taught. Only then will he start trying.

    • @ClissaT
      @ClissaT 2 года назад +6

      @@kaylahanson8853 Yes he sure is being persistent at trying to get his message across. He is trying very hard to communicate in his way and can't work out why the two legged ones don't hear him. Now he is so frustrated he is biting to get his point across or refusing to move.
      And he is such a big boy but he doesn't understand his strength. He is simply standing still.
      Seems to me he doesn't want to be in the stables, he wants to be in the paddock. He doesn't feel the bad weather and he has more room to move around out there. He needs to move.
      I was taught a very important lesson during my natural horsemanship journey. The first part was undemanding time to extablish leadership and the second part was remove the halter and all you have left is the truth. When you get both of those right, you've got inside your horse's head. The rest is easy or cream whichever way you look at it.

      I agree. Either a lavalier or a shotgun (directional) mic with a wind shield, but it seems like a Bluetooth lavalier mic - necklace or clip - would be the cheaper, easier option. You can pick them up for $30-$60 on Amazon. In fact, I think you can get lavaliers with wind muffs.
      If you're worried about a horse knocking it, I'd worry more about my breastbone, but insure it... If you go the shotgun mic route, I'd get a harness for it too so your wife can brace it against her body. They're not that heavy, but they can get to FEELING heavy, fast, if you're trying to just hold them out.
      This would improve the sound quality a lot. You could also narrate as you're moving around, even if you don't want to do that while you're working with a horse. (The cheapest option is to try cupping your hand around the mic on your phone - without covering it - but that's hard to keep up.)
      Also, I don't know what kind of phone or camera you're using, but a very good smartphone or camera can really make a difference. I notice that you lose focus kind of frequently. This is partly a flaw in smartphones - to oversimplify, you don't have enough room in a phone for great focal length and depth of field (the range of what's in focus.) Most smartphones have a fixed aperture (lens opening) of 1.8. Some have 2.2 apertures, which is a little smaller and might be better in bright light, but you need to get dark barn/stall areas too, which might be negatively impacted. You might try setting the ISO higher, to 400 or more, to see if that improves focus. (You would at least be better able to avoid losing focus due to movement.)
      I learned photography in the Jurassic age prior to digital, so I'm only beginning to understand how pixel size/number affects depth of field. I'm sure someone with more knowledge than me about pixels could advise you there. I won't pretend I know enough to tell anyone anything about it. You COULD try a phone with a 2.2 aperture to see how it looks, but I'm betting that wouldn't change much.
      What I do know is that the better the lens quality, the better the image, so definitely use the best you can afford. Zeiss, Leica, and Nikon are all good, and I think they're all making lenses for some smartphones, so you could try one with one of those sorts of lenses.
      I really appreciate your videos, and your horsemanship. I work in equine-assisted learning, and a lot of our interactions are ground-based, so I especially value the fact that so many of your videos address ground manners. Thanks for what you do!

    Greetings from Texas, Steve and family. Thank you so much for your willingness (and that of your clients!) to post these videos so people like me can learn.
    I got two of my horses (first time owner) 8 years ago and everything I thought I knew went out the window. I also learned I did not know how to ride after a few months of owning them. I ended up in an ambulance ride to the hospital that I don't remember much of and that very scary adventure (not the horses' - plural intended - fault) led me going deep into the rabbit hole of researching and watching videos and even subscribing to a couple trainers for a time.
    In all that time, you are the first one I've heard say to look at their feet when you ask them to move. Not the shoulder, not the side, not the butt but their feet. I think it's going to be a significant help to my 5 year old gelding. He's very much on the 'that's going to eat me I'm going to run a mile away and then look at it' side of things. He has a lot of try and some willingness once I get his mind back to the immediate vicinity and not a mile away. We've had some confusion in communication, like when I want him to stand he thinks he's supposed to disengage.
    Sorry for the mini-book, but I can write a MUCH longer one if you're ever interested. :) Thank you again!

    Love your videos, ive had my mare for 6 yrs,up to few weeks ago,I hadn't picked up her back feet.watching your method has helped me to pick her back feet up.ive been teaching her how to dance to Mambo #5 song.my mare is very quick learner, very smart.she now knows how to side up.only thing left to do is get me riding her.she is bigger than I'm used to,she very powerful.she has gates that I'm not use to.thank you so much.its made big difference.

    I am glad you pointed out the left eye thing...I think my boy does that which I thought he was trying to block me, but now I am realizing I think he is trying to keep me on his left eye. My boy is pushy like this too. He does not back up to just the stick so I am going to try putting plastic bags on my stick to mimic a flag and see if he will respond better to that. I like the leading and driving exercise...going to try that one too. Thanks for all of these techniques.

    Started watching your work a few months ago. I don’t have horses, nor have I ridden in years. Once the horse catches on, how subtle the language between you and the horse at times is amazes me. Truly amazing creatures. Thinking like the horse using their herd mentality, just wow.

    Hello from New York, USA. I am an animal lover. I do not have a horse but always wanted one. With the current world events, your videos help me relax and help me get to sleep - that's a compliment! You have a gift with these animals, a great sense of humor, and a beautiful family and life. Happy Anniversary to you and Tanya! Keep up the great work. I look forward to your postings.

    If you get a mic with a “dead cat”, it will cut wind noise quite a bit. The “dead cat” is a fluffy mic cover that moves in the wind without picking up the wind noise. Any mic will do, if you can find a fuzzy cover for it. The fuzzier the cover, the more wind it can handle without causing noise. When the mic is picking up wind,it will not pick up voices as well. Love the videos.

    Watch how his kind little stout pushy fellow always keeps his eyes on Steve right from very first few minutes. Don’t see that with the abused or troubled ones until end of the videos. This horse is a wonderful fellow that respects leadership. We as women must recognize what the equine object of our affections needs from us and then learn how to provide it in the moments that matter.

    What a lovely pony. He has beautiful eye lashes. He is a naughty one. He knows he is strong and his owner can't get him to move using brute force. So he just stands there and refuses to move because he can. Lol! The ladies need to be firmer with their horses so they are not taken advantage of. Firm but fair goes a long way with horses. I used to ride a Cob type sometimes in my youth he was huge around 16 hands and twice as big. He was naughty with the ladies including me and I was firm and fair. He would puff out his sides and hold his breath when one was putting on the saddle and if one did not check the girth one would get on the huge cob who would let out his breath and the saddle would go flying around with the huge cob making his escape. His other favourite trick was the pig jump. He would be going along nicely and suddenly hop to the side dispatching his rider. I got dispatched that way and knocked out cold as the girl I was doubling with landed on top of me and knocked me out. One day a huge man arrived with steel cap boots a construction worker type and took a liking to the huge cob. He was very firm but fair and the cob knew he had met his match. After being dumped a few times on the gravel driveway and putting the huge cob in his place he then behaved himself with his new rider and soon gave up his wicked tricks. The man used to show jump him wearing his steel capped boots and won many a jumping competition on him. It turned out the huge cob was quite the jumper and could jump enormous heights! Those two developed a really close partnership and the huge cob respected his new leader greatly.

    Such a perfect video! Steve, you are the King of horse whisperers!
    You and Jimmy clicked so well right from the get go. You have and are definitely doing what you should be doing in this life. You are sooo good at it!
    I truly enjoy watching your videos! I can't imagine having a horse that has any kind of behavioral problem. The horses I had years ago weren't perfect, but they were sweethearts. No biting, kicking, etc. It's so wonderful that you can help so many people with their problem horses. You are such a blessing!
    And Happy Anniversary to you and Tanya! May you have many, many more wonderful years together!
    Big Hugs 🩷 Suzy

    What a gorgeous cob! I’d love him in my paddock 🐴🥰. Great job again Steve and there’s no way you can out-push a cob as you said. They are so strong and that’s what they are bred for - pulling wagons or trees etc. They naturally brace against pressure, but they can learn to be light.
