    One of my three .308 caliber rifles is a Mossberg Patrol. Comes with box magazines and iron sights. Easy, crisp breaking trigger pull. It accepts standard DPMS profile LR-308/SR-25 magazines as well as M1A/M14 magazines. Great shooting gun for about $600

    As an owner of PA-10, I can attest that they're among the very best rifles available in .308 Winchester. Mine will regularly place 5 Winchester 150 grain Powerpoints into a half inch group at a hundred yards, and I've had even better grouping with the Remington 150 grain Core-Lokt loads. (3/8" groups at 100 yds)

      How many 308's have you shot? 100 yards is pretty much point blank range for a 308.

      @BikerDash Год назад +1

      @gorzinplatz this is my 2nd .308 rifle I've owned, though I've owned/shot other calibers. The primary reason my accuracy tests have been at a hundred yards is because that's the longest range available to me without having to join a club. If I could find a 300 to 500 yard range to really test my rifle, I'd be in Heaven lol

    The M-1A is perfect. It is accurate to 450 meters with it iron sites. A scope makes it accurate enough to take down game at 1000 meters. It is rugged and dependable. It lacks the scary sexiness of it AR counterparts, but it can be used from extreme arctic temperatures to a tropical jungle. It functions in sandy environments or in a hurricane.

    Picking up a Savage Axis 308 for my nephew this year. Start them when they're young getting used to the recoil of the heavier stuff. The 308 is a wonderful place to start not too hard not to soft. It lets you know you shot without punching you in the shoulder.

    • @TimDyck
      @TimDyck Год назад +1

      My oldest Daughter has a Savage Axis. I have shot it enough to know that it is an excellent hunting rifle and although she shoots competitively with a much more expensive target rifle she likes the relatively lightweight and acceptable accuracy of the Savage. 308 is her favorite caliber for both hunting and competition. Needless to say we reload all our own ammo and because she is considerably more fussy then I am she has tailored her ammo to the firearm and makes groupings similar to my A Bolt Browning with a rifle that cost half the price.
      So yes the Savage is a great starter rifle and even when the kid gets older he will still have a firearm that can shoot deer, elk and moose without ever having to buy something else...unless he wants to.

      You get what you pay for. AR-10's generally speaking don't hold up. A range queen is just that. A proven combat rifle is something you can depend on to save your life. I saw a soldier in El Salvador get hit in the thigh and was dead before he hit the ground. It took out both femurs and both femural arteries. Now that I'm old, I wouldn't want to hump one in the bush. But, an 18" Para 50:63 is my choice of battle proven rifles.

    For some people, 308 is a bit of a kick. Older, worn out joints not quite ready for replacement, my grandaughter, 15 years old and 112 pounds. But a friend offered his bolt action 308 with a muzzle brake he said was nicknamed the snot-knocker. Because people on the next bench over at the range got the snot knocked out of there nose with every trigger pull. It shot like a 9mm carbine. Every trigger pull was a joy for both the old man and the lightweight kid. And yes, at the bench on either side, the concussion was amazing. But it was easy to keep the sights on the target.

    I've got a Ruger American in 308 and I'm very happy with this gun using 180 gr. Winchester power points. It's a single jagged hole at 100 yards.
    My other 308 is a Howa bull barrel 24 in. Cerakote camouflage. It will do the same thing with the 178 gr. Hornady ELDX bullets. These newer guns have better barrels and tighter chambers besides floated barrels.
    The triggers aren't the best and trigger control seems to be the biggest hurdle. The only thing I would change would have to be is a better trigger. I'm currently considering getting some new Timneys for these two. I'm used to my Remington 700s clean, crisp break with no creep set at 3 pounds.
    Can't say this old 700 bdl in 30/06 will poke em all through the same ragged hole with factory ammunition. I have a load working just as well as the 308s, but I'll never shoot anything else, cause I found the magic recipe for that old gun.
    Semper Fi.

      Remove the trigger spring (behind the adjustment screw) install a ball point pen spring and you will have a 2 1/4 pound trigger. I cut my spring off 1/4" and plisshes all the parts that rub with diamond compound and a Dremel (most of the grit was coming from the middle trigger blade rubbing, it is punched and one side has burrs) and I have a 1 3/4 pound trigger that is silky smooth (think Timney) Put a Magupl Hunter stock on it ($234 on EBay), a nice brake and you will love this gun

    Have fired and know friends that used the Ruger and the M10, Both are very reliable and accurate, However spend some money on the right Scope and Mounts.
    Both got what they were told were good setups, accuracy fell off within 5 to 10 rounds as the mounts and scopes they had been recommended were unable to handle the recoil without losing zero. One of them got jostled around by moving to hunting grounds on a semi rough trail and couldn`t hit anything, it was in a hard shell case.

There are some hig differences like how the rear of the receivers are cut, DPMS style rifle are rounded while Armalite AR-10 is cut at 45 degrees. As for the list, I think the Savage 10 should be in there instead of the Axis.

      Optics is just the tip of the iceberg. The M1A is expensive, finicky, unreliable, not really even all that accurate, and is more difficult to work on. You can put together a decent AR-10 for hundreds less that will be functionally superior to an M1A in literally every way. I have a pair of Aero M5s with many more rounds and much less hassle than my M1A. My M1A has been back to Springfield twice. Even the 16 in CMV barreled M5 will shoot circles around the M1A. The 20 in Proof barreled M5? Forget about it. The M1A isn't even in the same league. The M1A is a shitty knock-off of an abomination by a poser company.

    Where you getting a .308 oracle for under $1000? You might pull off a DPMS oracle in 5.56 for 600 but you ain't getting a .308 oracle for under 800.

      That is unfortunately true but you can pick up an older Model 700 for a reasonable price and those ones will last the lifetime of your average shooter. My son in law puts over 100 rounds through his every year (we may be considered fanatics when it comes to shooting) and his rifle is almost 20 years old and still very accurate.

      @@TimDyck 40 yrs back i had the chance to use one and let me tell you i was amazed with it's accuracy and build. After that i wanted one should have bought one back then. I'm glad you ended up with a good one.

    Disingenuous review when any 308 review ignores the budget precision Howa 1500 action. Nothing compares in price for quality budget entry 308 ELR shooters.

    Why do you show so many shotgun video clips if we are supposed to be discussing.308 rifles?

    You've done a disservice by not highlighting the M18 Mauser in .308. It can do anything a hunter needs at any practical range. Built by Germans, who know about rifle quality.

    Why not buy a chassis rifle. With it the rifle can be made to fit the shooter and thus realization of a muscularly relaxed position is assured and that relaxation means more consistent recoil resistance for smaller groupings.
