    The 1/2 inch model has helped me immensely. I do work on european vehicles and some bmw's go to 300ftlbs on the axle nut. My boss couldnt get his off his 328xi so I brought mine over and it was out instantly. We had to press new bearrings in so it also made the job very smooth. I agree, you never want to tighten fasteners back on with this. Good way to break bolts and also ruin threads in a hurry.

    This is exactly what I was looking for. At my home where my semi-truck is parked and worked on, I have no air compressor for my 1" tire impact and the trucks air supply just can't keep up. Truck lugs must be set at a TMC mandated torque of 500-ft.lbs and it appears this impact can do just that. I have up/down adapters for 3/4" which means I can use my 1/2", 3/4", and 1" impact sockets. Since I normally carry most of my tools on the truck, adding this tool means now I can perform my own tire changes on the side of the road by myself because honestly RoadSquad and most tire shops charge more for the road service fee than most loads even pay. It's not uncommon for a single tire blow-out to cost $750 or more and since I retain most of my used virgin tires, with this impact I can do a tire change in under a 1/2 hour for free and pocket the cash I would've lost to road service. That alone will pay for this impact and some spare batteries which I can charge through my trucks 120-volt 1500-watt inverter.

      James Barrow Yes, you can do everything you mentioned above with this tool. I'm an O/O myself & I ride with this tool at all times. Looking for a certain spare tire rack so I can be ready. You also may wanna use this as a back up "lug wrench torque multiplier" if the batteries fail do to the wild temp swings of this tool being in a truck 24/7/365...
      Just know this video May be a little deceiving. because when I purchased this tool 12/2014, it came with the 4A/H batteries. they said they are using the 5A/h & I'm sure if this unit comes with the 5a/h battery. Just something to look out for...

    • @YoungChristopher1
      @YoungChristopher1 9 лет назад

      James Barrow You can torque it lower. Honestly I'd recommend 475 ft lbs. Also make sure you perform the rist procedure. That oil on the hub piloted types makes a huge difference in clamping force. Without proper clamping force you may as-well stop torquing.
      A question I do have is this. What type of jack do you use? I'm rather curious as I want a heavy duty manual jack, but I rather not buy one that will need replacement sooner rather than later.

      cj young, I carry an air-operated 20-ton bottle jack which easily fits in frame mounted tool box or I can carry it in my sidebox in the cab. Since my posting and having received my new M18 Fuel Impact, I've now got two 4-a/h batteries and one 5-a/h battery. After it arrived I tried it out just to see what it would do and was surprised how long it took just to loosen a single lug. What my 1" inch air impact can do in a couple of seconds actually took several minutes with this M18 Fuel Impact. I also tried loosening an 15/16" bolt for my 5th-wheel frame bracket and shocked that it would not budge. This impact tool is handy for a lot of things but fell way short of my expectations.

    • @WorkshopAddict
      @WorkshopAddict  9 лет назад +1

      James Barrow How tight are the lugs you are trying to loosen up? I can see that you could be having issues if you use your 1" impact to put the lugs on a semi, but they would be incredibly over tightened. some one inch impacts will do over 1,500 ft lbs.

      More like most are at-least 1500. I've had some claiming more force than that.
      thanks for telling me what you were using! :) You can tire the dewalt 18 volt 3/8 drive, I'll look up the series later. Guy in our shop owns three, each more than able to remove semi lugs. Removed a inner and outer lugged tire with one bar used. I was impressed.

    Thanks for the info! Definitely gonna try the other sealed new battery pack. If there's a difference in battery life then that should indicate that the one that came attached to the gun was probably bad. I know it's probably asking too much, but I would love to see what kind of performance you guys get running a 4.0Ah battery, if possible. Thanks. Cool videos.

    Can you do a video using an 8" long 3/4 fine thread bolt torqued to 150 lbs + 180 degrees with the gun. Short bolts even torqued to higher values can be easier to remove than longer bolts torqued to less. It would be interesting to see if it is able to.

    So, using a socket adapter on the 3/4 inch impact to use 1/2 sockets would significantly decrease the torque? I ask because I do not have any 3/4 inch sockets of any variety and have no interest in buying them. However, I see that the 3/4 M18 is more powerful than the 1/2 M18. If you had to pick between the 2864 (3/4) or the 2863 (1/2) models and both were going for the same price, which one would you get if limited to getting one or the other?
    Would getting the 1/2 M18 and using the 1/2 sockets be the better way to go?

    What's the most power/foot-lb, torque etc.. would I need to work on an everyday car (no trucks) and to remove rusted/seized nuts & bolts ? What's the difference between Nm, torque, foot Lb, Inch Lb ?

    • @WorkshopAddict
      @WorkshopAddict  9 лет назад +1

      +sypher0101 Lots of questions. IMHO, 500 ft/lbs is pretty decent for most automotive. Many can get by with 300 ft lbs. So, foot pounds is a measurement of torque. Inch pounds is also a measurement of torque, but is just foot pounds times 12... There are 12 inches in a foot....... NM or newton metre is the metric version.

    As you said this is way too much torque for automotive use and the 1/2 inch is about the same amount of torque. For automotive use in your opinion would the Ridgid 1/2 cordless impact be a more appropriate tool for automotive use?

    • @WorkshopAddict
      @WorkshopAddict  9 лет назад

      Bigchuck678 I think the 1/2 model from Milwaukee is great for automotive use as long as you are careful. You have the power to break studs and you do not want to use them to put bolts on. The Ridgid model is 300 ft lbs and that is a lighter tool. It might fall short in some applications, but would cover most.

      Lizzy V One wheel being 10 lugs? For us, we did not drop a bar until maybe the third wheel. But that will depend on how hard it is being used. I cannot imagine that the battery would be drained after removing four 10 lug semi 4 wheels!

    The 1/2 version cannot remove nuts from wheel studs TQ'd to 520ft-lbs (Industrial Lift Truck Drive Wheels). I have used the 1/2 Milwaukee impact to remove fasteners TQ'd to 350 lb·ft with no issues.
    I have an IR 1" pneumatic gun at work that won't break loose fasteners put on at 1,100 lb·ft.To think any of these battery powered impacts could do that is just silly.
    To anyone considering the purchase of a battery powered impact: They are WAY optimistic with these numbers.
    PS: Most people will never even attempt to remove a fastener that has been put on with much more than 250 lb·ft. A lot of auto mechanics won't be going over that either. Add in some thread locker or rust and this impact will still be plenty powerful for *most* people.

    • @ariip

      +christophers1247 Very useful. Med duty truck or semi. Flat tire on the road and need to change a tire. My sockets are 3/4 drive for a 1 3/16 nut which is on my wheels. Tighten to over 300 lbs and on removal with rust etc can take over 700 to get off. Mobile air compressor has to keep running to keep up and costs more money than the cordless. Professional does not have to use an air impact. Lets say out in the yard or lot, rather than pulling a hose out of the building. You seem to make statements without really thinking about or knowing the business and all the situations people run into.

    • @christophers1247
      @christophers1247 9 лет назад

      +Ari P lol i understand the industry and the problems people run into. an electric 3/4 drive impact might seem useful and might even be not a bad idea for changing wheels but if you are doing a tyre repair you need an air line and compressor anyway so why an an electric impact? also in the yard taking something apart unless you are doing major tare-down of an axle which you would need to drag out more than an airline to do more than likely so wats the problem with a breaker bar or pulling out an airline just seems like a waste of money to me but thats my opinion am i not entitled to it?

      +Chance George One would think that the large torx bolts on the vw would be easy for a 3/4" impact wrench. The torque this impact pits out should have broke the bit if it did not move the bolts. The ram should have been simple also with the proper socket. Jumping on a 25 inch breaker bar is a bit crazy to remove lugs. I would question if the bolts are stretched on each rim now.

Still, I'm not giving up let... I'm willing to try the 5.0Ah battery pack and see how that turns out... But that's the final draw... If there is no real improvement then I'll call it Quits. However, I will say that the gun is a hell of an impact and I'm very impressed with its power, but the battery life is boo-boo :(
    Till next time, I'll keep everyone posted...

      +Lizzy V It depends on your lug-nuts and how rusty/tight they are. If you have a med duty or semi, they use much more torque so that might make sense for any gun.

      +bill2526 bill2526 It depends on your lug-nuts and how rusty/tight they have to be. What kind of truck do you have. You have 6 lug nuts per wheel? I have 8 and they are 1 3/16 size lug-nuts that are supposed to go to over 300 lbs which after sitting etc can take twice that or more to take off. They also are designed with a taper collar/cone that prevents damage from over-tightening.

      What power tool is not made in China these days. The motors on almost all of them are made in China... Some are assembled in the USA... but that is it.

    Wow... That's hard to believe... Yes, 10 lugs on the semi wheel. I just tried it 4 hrs ago and I could hardly remove 4 lugs before getting to half a pack (4.0 amp). I will say that they might have been over torqued to begin with because the tire guys around here use the 1" pneumatic guns.. But it did drain rather quick and I'm using the correct 3/4" drive socket (no adapters) and after maybe 6 seconds they did come loose. I just don't see how I would remove 10 lugs off ONE wheel and then manage to tighten them up with the same pack. I'll have to keep testing the gun over the next few weeks otherwise it's going back to the manufacturer.

      Lizzy V You need to try a different battery pack. Something is wrong.

    sorry but I don't find it useful to watch a video were your only busting 1000 pounds. you just set. it would of been better if you had used some lock tight on that bolt and then let it sit out side for a week to two and sprayed water on it so I'd get rusty. that would be useful. sory it's just I know you can do better.

      +James MacInnis There is no "only 1000 lbs". That is 1000 lbs which is just under the guns rating which proves its performance. I am not sure where you have successfully made a point at all. After lock tite and rust there is no way of knowing what the actual torque would be on the bolt and nut. With the lock tite it could actually be equivalent to 1500 lbs or more. That would not be a fair or accurate test for any tool. If you tighten down with a measured torque wrench and calculate leverage by math using a extender then you know by science and it is a fair test. Your suggestion does not show very much thought or knowledge. Then don't buy the tool. I am sure milwaukee and other buyers care about you not buying the tool or understand a review if you do not have the knowledge to know the difference.

      +James MacInnis Only busting 1000 lbs.... Wow, you're a tough man to impress! Are you sure you are really familiar with what 1,000 lb·ft or torque really entails?
      A Grd8 1 1/8-7 fastener @ 960 lb·ft with lube (approx 75% proof load) results in 68,700 PSI of clamping pressure.
      Thats just over 34 TONS of clamping force. That's enough force to deform 1" thick mild steel plate.
      I'm a 6' almost 200lb man. I'd have to stand on the end of a bar about 5ft long to apply the 1000 lbs of force to a fastener. The TQ wrench I use at work to achieve 1,000 lb·ft is about 7' long and I'm still huffing and puffing to get it to click.
