  • Go behind-the-scenes and discover what it takes to train a knight for English Heritage’s summer event programme of knights’ tournaments and legendary jousts.
Dominic Sewell, owner and trainer at Historic Equitation, discusses the trials and tribulations of his job and a modern-day training process authentically rooted in historical methods, handbooks and training manuals. From learning how to use weapons and ride horses, to bearing the weight of heavy armour and the pressures of a live joust, there’s much to master in becoming a medieval knight performer.
With thanks to Dominic, Clive, Lisa and all at Historic Equitation.

What an incredible watch, and damn the algorithm for only showing me this now! My only critique is that it wasn't long enough!

Would war horses of that period be that tall & lithe? I thought they were riding smaller, stockier horses.

Would one horse trained for jousting and another trained for combat be too much an extravagance for the more experienced knights? I find I am more interested in the horses than in their riders.
