We have some of these not this particular variety, but they are so beautiful. A couple years ago we got hit by bagworms and it was a catastrophe, we didn't notice until a few months down the line and they started geting huge bald dead patches. We had to hand pick the bagworms once a week for about an hour each time and it has taken about four years now to recover but it has recovered.
Fun fact time! Arborvitaes are also know as white cedar is very rot resistant and insect resistant great for project and smells amazing! Also it is more rot resistant than red cedar because of where it grows.
@@Sunshine-rc7ow Yes, they can, but cultivate the soil and add drainage first (dig deeper and add compost, gypsum and perlite in the hole.) Mine are beautiful and thriwing (clay soil, too.)
Great looking trees. I've done something similar with our front driveway - great, evergreen colour but also a little screening. Love seeing this project come together. :D
Laura, I am not sure if you look at comments from your old videos but I am wondering if you could do a video or if you have a good reference for how to trim evergreens. Also, I have some mature arborvitaes that "flop over" meaning that the individual trunks in the tree separate. Do you have any recommendations?
We planted several Arborvitaes in a row for privacy with our neighbor. It was dine by professional landscapers..They planted with very less spacing and kept the burlap cover on the roots while planting. The whole was not deep enough. And now my trees are dying one after another😢..Should I replant them with new organic soil and with spacing?
I really love your videos! Ive watched them all even though I dont have enough space nor money to do most of the projects! I do have a question though.. When you plant a flower bed, do you draw up some sort of plan first or do you just get lots of plants and move them about until you're happy? I'm 16 and live in the north of Scotland, it's great beacuse our climates in winter are pretty similar so it really helps when you talk about how hardy plants are! You and your videos are such a massive inspiration and help to me so I just wanted to also say a very big thank you for making them! They're great :D Finn :)
What will watering be like now that it is late fall? Are you just going to hand water them? I have a lot of weed barrier fabric in my yard so I am interested in how you will water them going forward to. I'd love to hear. Thanks for sharing!
Wonderful presentation, thank you so much. One question I have is; how long can I keep this plant in a pot at Mediterranean conditions wher it seldom goes below freezing? And, if yes, what size pot would I need. Thank you.........
I love how these look and I'm so excited to see how the greenhouse turns out! I would love to do a privacy hedge, but am not sure what would work. Depending on what chart I look art, I'm 9a, 10a or 10b ( but it looks like the temps are all pretty close). My soil is kinda hard, ( I have a fig and pomegranate tree that grow well, and I'm in avocado country), and I would like something that grows fairly quick. Any ideas?
I'm about to plant a couple of these, so this video was super helpful. I just have one question. Since I'm only planting two, I don't really need the fabric for spacing reasons; but is it important to cover the soil after planting as you did in the video?
Both yes and no,all of these belongs in the Cupressaceae family, but are not true cypress trees. Arborvitae(White Cedars) or Thujas as they are also known.(Thuja occidentalis, brabant variety tends to get, wider and bushier and taller than the smaragd variety, wich often are more narrow in form and keep it`s shape better and also have a darker, greener and lushier color on its brances.. They usually dont get as wide as the drabant variety, and usually dont form such a dense thick wall of brances like drabant, tends to do, unless you cut them!! Laura I believe is using the smaragd variety of Thuja Occidentalis),.Arborvitae belongs in the cypress familly. There are five species in the genus, two native to North America and three native to eastern Asia , but are not true cypress trees cupressus sempervirens. You have also the family Chamaecyparis, (false cypress) example C. lawsoniana , Lawson Cypress,. wich also belongs in the Cupressaceae family ,but are also not a true cypress. you could try and read about this confusyfying family here,. but I warn you its not easy lol But Arborvitae are Thujas.. . en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cupressaceae
....If EACH grows to be 5 ft wide, don't you have to space them farther apart...??...Even 3 ft means each has to have room....thus 6 ft....or they are growing into each other, right...??
i love rewatching your old videos
Ok I was wondering if I could put rock around my new North Pole arborvitae trees and now I feel comfortable doing so! Thank you! ❤️❤️❤️❤️🤗🤗🤗
Can't wait to see the finished greenhouse. :)
