Regarding the fishing equipment I am looking at modifying the kayak to hold a rod.
Even a small motor contraption just to get me out of trouble say a strong head wind blows us towards osea.

I'm paddling around Mersea Island today, leave & return from Point Clear with 15 - 20 others. That way the tidal flow should be mostly in our favour.
You asked for suggestions? Well first check the weather forecast & build-in a delay time as few trips go according to schedule. Check tide times via free internet sites, best to launch 2-3 hours before high tide & that should get you to your destination 2-3 hours after high tide, to avoid the dreaded mud. You took food & water, good. Dress for the worst just in case. Tell someone where & when your destination is & take a phone, you did, good. How on earth did a SOT kayak get water in it? You must fix that problem before returning to the water as sinking is not an option.
Say "Hi" if you see an old fart paddling an orange Dagger Exodus, probably with a KayakSailor sail & homemade outriggers. Kayaking is very sociable if you make the effort to say Hi. Regards, Johnnyk.

Thanks very much John, Only reading this message now but would of loved to of come. Let me know if you're planning to do something similar. I'm fairly local to you but don't yet own a roof rack for my current car. More than welcome to join me on the Heybridge side if you have an easier way to transport Kayaks. I have met some friendly people kayaking over towards Maldon but don't often see Kayaks over here.

Guys, you need to get some training, it's just not fair on the emergency services to go out so ill prepared. At one point one of you is even using his paddle upside down! I enjoyed the video but you survived by luck. Go on a course and enjoy your kayaking more.

    • @IridescentStudiosYouTube
      @IridescentStudiosYouTube  4 года назад +1

Appreciate the concern - I think that clip of Micha paddling upside down is where I had asked him to 'pretend' to paddle for some footage.
The Black-water River your never more than roughly 0.5 miles away from land. We always had an option to abandon the kayaks what ever way the wind was blowing.
I actually yern to do challenging trip like this every year... Unfortunately 2020 has made it too difficult.
As I got a lot of similar comments - I did make a follow up video about taking Risk - For someone who see's this as Dangerous (and I do agree mostly) I would love to hear your thoughts on this video.

I know others have said it but you really need to get a detailed local weather forecast and check tide times. Also take emergency flares, smoke and parachute, with you if you need the Lifeboat to come get you. Never take it for granted that you will always have phone signal.

I sail from Bradwell you have been better going to Bradwell slipeay and calling it a day kayaking in the dark with strong winds is dangerous if you capsized perhaps a survial tent and bag and little would help you could haulbout warm on tollesbury foreshore or dengie and continue in daylight....

Well made video nice! great narration!
There is a lot going on in this video that makes me a little uncomfortable though!! If your going ot use sit on tops wear a wetsuit or dry suit!!
Not matter how good a swimmer you think you are wear a flotation device of some sorts !! Learn about tides and weather reports and plan accordingly! Someone teach Mika how to use a paddle (its always upside down!) he'll be loosing alot of power from his strokes.
I understand you like a challenge and are confident, which is fine but you have to also consider the emergency services and the people that will have to put themselves at risk should the worst occur.
So the best way to avoid this is to take some courses to help you out, get some bcu star awards and if coastal paddleing is your thing get into sea kayaks you will love them!! :)
All of this is said with best interests at heart! I Love paddling in all its forms and the community that comes with it but there are too many deaths on the water which all stem from little things accumulating into disaster!
Good luck in future jouneys! :)

      Hi John,
Sorry never got around to responding to your message, I've seen a couple from yourself, thought I'd reach out although a bit delayed.
I was considering making a video on the matter of risk but never got round to it, so for now here is my response that I'm writing late at night.

I do appreciate the concern that yourself and other people have commented on,
I'm aware the trip was somewhat dangerous but never really felt in any real risk.
We were never really any further than a mile away from land, I had a wet suit on can't remember about Micah but I don't remember him complaining about the cold at all (was just me as I feel the cold generally).
Sure there is lessons to be learned and even to this day I don't regret the trip...
In my life I've always been someone to take a risk in all aspects of life, be it career, sports, financially and in hind sight I wouldn't be the person I am today if I hadn't done so...
I touch upon at the end of my quarter life crisis video...
      ruclips.net/video/TkbQlTip7Pc/видео.html
And sure one day my luck might run out, I could slip in the shower, take a wrong turn down an alley or eat some bad chicken or maybe get lost at sea on a sea kayak...
But life shouldn't be worrying about how you're going to go, that's inevitable.
This isn't me trying to justify my stupidity and again I've made many silly decisions in life including this adventure but hey life would be a lot less exciting without them .
      Cheers
      Ryan
