9:00 One of the few places the United States that ever had a true collective farm system was in the Amana colonies of Iowa County, Iowa going back to the middle of the 1800's. It was based on religious refugees protesting the Protestants in Germany and chafing under the resultant oppression. This "Inspirationalist" group, acting like the Amish and Mennonites, migrated to the United States but found the first settlement in New York wasn't large enough. So they moved west and prospered in the wide open spaces of the Iowa frontier. They had a communal system of working and eating, and developed their own flour mill and wool mill. Religious idealism held them together for the better part of a century, but hard times and social modernization did them in. It wasn't leaders going corrupt, it was seeing modern towns and reading modern newspapers and hearing modern radio that created a sense of the outside world they wanted to know by motor car, and the economic stress of the Great Depression was the last straw toward dissolving the collective system. 9:01 Collective farms weren't effective, and he's Russian, so he says that because his people didn't face discrimination during that time but muslims in Azerbaijan under Soviet rule faced many challenges due to their background, with many dying from starvation and poverty
Great work as usual! We viewers get to see parts of the world we know so little about. And you drinking tea during the sanitorium’s rave was priceless! 😄
Thanks for this. I used to live here years ago. I had the opportunity to travel all over the country. It's so culturally diverse with its Molokan Christians, Mountain Jews, Zoroastrians, Muslims and so many different languages. I met people in the Talish mountains who still thought Azerbaijan was part of the Soviet Union (this was in the early 2000s). While not officially a kolkov, I remember meeting the Meshketians (Central Azerbaijan) whose farming community seemed just like a collective farm. You've only had a tiny taste of this country. There is so much more to see, mud volcanoes, tea plantations, fire coming out of holes in the mountain!
Yes, you are right! I also come from diverse family background. We have in my family Azerbaijani Turks, Ashkinazi Jewish, Russians (my uncle is married to a local Azerbaijani Russian, which makes my cousins half Russian), Armenians (my father's uncle married to an Azerbaijani Armenian, which makes his cousins half Armenian). If you travel from one part of Azerbaijan to another like from the north to the south of the county, they do not understand each other's local languages. This is how diverse this small county is. But we all and each from different ethnic background are proud to be an Azerbaijani. I have never had any discrimination in Azerbaijan being from diverse background. It is model of multiculturalism, ethnic diversity and coexistence of different religions in one small country. Everybody is respected. it comes from bottom (population) to government (up) and viice-versa from up to bottom, which makes the belief of multiculturalism and tolerance very strong in Azerbaijan.
I have to admit, I don't watch this channel very much, but this particular video was most interesting. Still didn't get where the SCAM town comes in. I'll have to check out more of your videos, but this one was very interesting and kept my attention.
In the 1800s Americans would use crude petroleum as a medicine or tonic. Taking a petroleum bath maybe a tradition in Azerbaijan but that smell of zapravochnaya stantsiya is an indication of all of the chemicals in that mixture. OMG I hope and pray that you were not harmed.
There’s a common belief about the discovery of Naftalan medicinal oil. According to legend, centuries ago, a group of Silk Road merchants passing through Naftalan faced an unusual event. One of their camels became severely ill, prompting the owner to leave the animal in a pool of oil, expecting it to die. However, when the merchant returned, he was astonished to find the camel not only alive but revitalized.
Eli, thank you so much for informative and fun videos! As a Turkish from Türkiye, I have lots of interest in both Azerbaijan’s Turkish side and Soviet side. It was very amazing to watch. Keep up the good work 🤍🇹🇷🇦🇿
????? W t f? What do you mean Azerbaijani Turkish side???? There is no Turks in Azerbaijan, come to the ground, you become annoying. There are little turkIC people, the rest are indigenous Caucasian Albanians and Manneans. Ölkemden defolun
there is NO Turkish side in Azerbaijan. Educate yourself and improve your English. Perhaps then you’ll have a chance to understand the difference between Turkish and Turkic.

@@AlexanderTch Azerbaijani Turks have been under both Russian and Persian influence, we have been under more European and Arab influence, our languages, our race, our origins are the same, we just have some cultural differences that have formed over time. In fact, when the states were first established they were identical but Azerbaijan has always been more intellectual and unfortunately people in Turkey have gone and are going in a very wrong way. Yes, from the outside it looks like Turkey is better than Azerbaijan but it is not. Both states have problems, but Azerbaijan's problems can be solved more easily. Unfortunately the Turks have ruined Turkey, it could have been a very good country but we could not achieve the principles of Ataturk. We regressed over time.
@@MN1k0lay There's no such nation called Azerbaijani Turks. This is an invention of Stalin. We are Azerbaijanis. Learn to say the nation's name correctly.

10:04 Sensitive, not sensible. Sensitive is what is delicate to feel or understand or discuss and might upset people. For example, that is a sensitive subject so I don't want to get into trouble bringing it up. Sensible is what makes sense as an idea or something to discuss. For instance, the sensible thing to do is not discuss corruption because it is a sensitive topic that might upset some people and get me thrown in jail. You could also say "Don't let the sheets of the bedding touch my foot because I dropped a big hammer on my foot so it is still sore and sensitive to the slightest touch or weight." Or, some people are sensitive to cold water and can't stand to go swimming in it. So the sensible thing for them to do is stay away and not freeze.
I'm sure Eli knows the right word, but just slipped up. In fact she might be using it in the old sense. Jane Austen uses the word 'sensible' for when a character is aware of another's feelings.
And I told recently a co-intern who is from Aserbaidchan that I have not really an idea how to picture Aserbaidchan outside of Baku. Thank you for filling this gap!

As an Azerbaijani who have lived in the EU and UK for the last 25 years, I can say that not many people know about Azerbaijan in the EU and UK. People always ask me where Azerbaijan is, I explain to them it is a Caucasian country between Russia and Turkey. I don't blame them, Azerbaijan is a very small country with a small population. Hope people from the EU and UK will watch your video. They will have an idea about the country and people. Thank you for sharing
But in EU, most of people know about armenia because of their anti-turk gay diaspora
Ну не сказал бы что прям маленькая страна. Такая, средненькая.
You have such a great spirit Eli. Another fantastic video😁🌄
1:16 - That's how my grandparents drink coffee in Sweden 👌
Hej till sverige då😂 jag viste inte att det var något svenskar gjorde, kul att få veta.
I love to "meet' people from all over the world - through your channel. Thanks!
Ditto that
Yes it is very nice to learn about different cultures and traditions
This was wonderful. I have learned so much from your channel. Thank Eli for your sacrifices - even the oil Bath - poor you.
That was so interesting Eli and its easy to tell from your reaction that the Bath was a totally unexpected pleasure, after you got in.
I will try drinking tea with jam instead of sugar.
I like my tea without sugar, but in great variety, including my special field tea.
I am an Azerbaijani, and I like to drink tea with pear and raspberry jam.
Thanks, another most interesting podcast. 🌹
You have by far and away the most interesting and informative travel/culture RUclips channel. I am quite impressed. Well done!

The population in Sweden is getting worse every year Open letter to the government: Today, suicide makes up 93 percent of all fatal violence
Suicide among young adults (ages 20-29) also increases every year by 1.8 percent. Several known risk factors for mental health problems and psychiatric diseases and conditions, such as long-term unemployment, social vulnerability and school failure, are going in the wrong direction. The increasing uncertainty in life and the outside world in recent years has also made an impression on people's mood and is reflected in an increased pressure on Mind's guidelines. Despite a 30 percent increase in calls received annually, we are only able to receive one in ten calls to the Suicide Line with existing resources. The increase in mental health problems has been going on for several decades and today a full 41 percent of all adults state that they have mental health problems in the form of anxiety, worry or anxiety. From having been relatively stable in the years 2004-2015, the percentage reporting problems with anxiety, worry or anxiety increased in five years, from 37 percent in 2015 to 49 percent among women and among men from 24 percent to 33 percent.

Directed support to Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenia To assist those affected, Sweden has allocated close to 35 million kroner to targeted interventions in Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenia. The support has gone to the UN refugee agency (UNHCR, SEK 15 million), the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC, SEK 15 million), the organization Action Against Hunger (just under SEK 2.5 million) and Save the Children (SEK 2.5 million). Sweden also contributes to civil support through the Agency for Community Protection and Preparedness (MSB) within the framework of the EU's civil protection mechanism. The EU has also assisted with just over 10 million euros in humanitarian aid. We Azerbaijanis are not Turkish. Genetically and culturally we are indigenous people - Caucasus Albania + Manna, speaking turkIC language. Real Turks are of mongoloid race, the rest are just Turkic speaking. You can see asiatic looking people in Turkey but rarely find one in Azerbaijan. All this brotherhood is political manipulation. We don’t really feel close to you and don’t like your culture which is mix of greek Arabic Kurdish and Balkan. We have nothing in common.
This is another fascinating episode. You're awesome, Eli. Watching from Oregon, I always learn something new from your journeys. Places that I've read about, but will never see.
Beautiful as always Eli and a good video.

It’s pretty fascinating how each culture has their own way of consuming tea
The cut from 'let's go completely wild' to the clip of the bar gave me my will to live back. Incredible. Love your vids, Eli!
Eli I am impressed, you do not shy away from going deep enough to praise what should be praised and criticise what should be criticised. When I watch this I have a renewal of faith in young Russia, and the Russia that will be here in the future.
Thank you, great learning about Azerbajian life and food
Great video - again! Makes me want to visit all these countries! 🤩

????? W t f? What do you mean Azerbaijani Turkish side???? There is no Turks in Azerbaijan, come to the ground, you become annoying. There are little turkIC people, the rest are indigenous Caucasian Albanians and Manneans. Ölkemden defolun
There is no Turkish in Azerbaijan, come to the ground uneducated villager.
there is NO Turkish side in Azerbaijan. Educate yourself and improve your English. Perhaps then you’ll have a chance to understand the difference between Turkish and Turkic.

@@ilkinmustafayev I did look to see if I could find anything that definitely said that this was a dangerous thing to do. I didn't find anything solid that said so. I admit being surprised. However I did find a few mentions that made me question the practice. But nothing that said, don't do this!

It is not the only one... There is also Naftlan resort in Croatia in Ivanic Grad... Yes, Naftalan is very rare type of oil, but it is not unique... There are very good results with patients suffering from psoriasis...

I am very glad that you visited to Azerbaijan, I am from Turkey. But I fell Azerbaijan is my home, my life. Anyway we are same People, so it is normal. Yes, we have some differents, In any case, these differences make Azerbaijan feel like the place where I have to be.❤AZ❤️RU❤Türkiye
Love Turkey from Romania
What are the differences between Turkey and Azerbaijan? Languages are the same, aren't they?
@@ruslangurbanov1482 Are you kidding me, did you read the books backwards? Stalin said Azeri and secondly, Azeri is another nation and Azerbaijanis are another nation.
Thank you Eli , this was great 🌹🌹
10:04 Sensitive, not sensible.
@ jackieow is very sensitive to this portion of the video. For instance, the sensible thing to do is not Cry about a little situation...
@@earlysundays9544 This helps non native speakers, he is helping. Stop with the negativity.
I'm sure Eli knows the right word, but just slipped up. In fact she might be using it in the old sense. Jane Austen uses the word 'sensible' for when a character is aware of another's feelings.
