  • In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Really eye-opening for someone who has always been suspicious about the efficacy of humanitarian aid but I am also aware that this is her experience specifically and she may not have the full story, in any case I am interested in international development and will watch out for this kind of dilemma and think about how to overcome it

Seems journalism needs share of the aid money competing for same resources. If the aid organization are corrupt, what will make the Journalist not become corrupt???

Yohannes Hagos They clearly need help or advice from somebody? Who is better at pointing out faults than journalists who are paid to investigate these things?

Competition thing and biais in humanitarian aid, or even "business" aid let'say, cannot be denied, and can be raised, but not with this level of generalisation , simplification and with the same scope for every story.
"They..." as a package of same organisations and same people all doing wrong... At a confernece we expect better judgement.
Her example on Cholera in Haïti is not only wrong but a lie. Cholera was not expected as not existing in this area. But it was bring by UN Soldier from Bengladesh who managed it really porely (throwing body in the reiver, and th UN still deny theire responsability for it. That would have been an good criticise of the system trying to help but destroying. But it asks knowledge and judgement. It concerned a specificgroup of UN soldier, with bd luck (bringing cholera from home), and poor judgement. But it wasn't Big International NGO, , not smaller International NGO, not local Ngo, not development Ngo, not emergency Ngo, not medical Ngo...
This world is complex and not idylic but some people try hard and do a tremendous job.

Shut your eyes, look away, don't listen and keep donating. Or you could instead put up a project of your own. Maybe you get some help. It is not difficult to send a box filled with stuff to a remote village school somewhere far away in a poor country. Make sure the people get it themselves.

I'm profoundly shock by this speaker who generalise aid. Sure some "bad guys" as Ms Polmann mentioned will take advantage in some ways but the essence of humanitarian aid is life saving and build resilience. Most Aid workers do reach the most vulnerable and build strong relations and support communities and use the funds adequately. I would question the honesty of Ms Polmann a lot.

Outdated and missing important references to Sphere and the Cluster Coordination system. Talks about the challenges but says nothing about organizations' efforts to overcome them.

i am afraid this speech is sometimes simplistic and to a certain extent populist in the way it portrays aid organizations as idiotic people competing for funds.and missing obvious points

I don't know if I am a "liberal" because that set of values do not match the ones that define the world I live in - may be I am. And for sure I have been an aid worker. From 10 years aid experience, I got more than one doubt regarding the efficiency of aid, and saw many people confronted with similar doubts and various difficulties, deploying great intellectual strength, an array of talents and incredible energy in the field to better the action meant to help people confronted with exceptional conditions like wars bring. Men and women. Medicals, logisticians and every other profession. Some of them were excellent, others less good, some cynical. I swear good at planning and getting things done. Whether it is the right thing in the whole picture is another question. There are still and always serious dysfunctions (not just in aid, in global politics alltogether aid is swimming in), and a large space for betterment.
I just do not recognize that reality in the description from this video, that just looks like easy and a bit dirty - a quick shot for people who know little about those places but like to be be comforted in a way of viewing the world. Journalists should do a better job in my opinion.
+fhwuifhoqiuwefh qweoifuhqwf I feel sorry for you, you seem to be so full of hatred (for liberals, for women and may be many more), you probably like to watch the same things that keep you comfortable with your anger. I have a little gift, I bumped into this one that should make you angry in every sense: facebook.com/deepgreenresistancefrance/videos/1812926412181061/?fref=nf

Agnes Lesage Mmm... I have just watched the video, and in no way think that she described people who works in NGOs as "idiotic". On the contrary, she repeats several times that they want to do good and their behaviour is very logical. But it is not efficient if you are really not helping. This is a 20 minute talk, of course it is simplistic. She is just pointing out some of the complexities that are not well addressed by NGOs.

Where do people who freelance have the money to just drop everything and do this travel journalism?

    • @dukewilliam3660

they are paid by the dame people they claim to be up against. Journalists are spin doctors and part of a propaganda machine to maintain a specific agenda.
