      Have you considered that the concept of a "true nerd" is in itself utterly bizarre and is nothing but a purity project designed to give people some semblance of personal value because they consume particular media or are interested in certain subjects?
      No one gives a fuck about who deserves the "nerd" qualifier or not, it's inherently fucking pointless.

    • @Ekulioful
      @Ekulioful 3 года назад +1

      @MichaelJackson Basically. The only reason "nerds" cry about that shit is because they can no longer carry around the entirely superficial arrogance they've built up around "knowing about things other people don't."
      And then you get responses like the ones you got because there is an entire subset of society that thinks their intelligence hinges on knowing meaningless and unapplicable drivel and bullshit. It's beyond pathetic.
      And this is coming from someone with a hyper specific degree in an extremely obtuse and niche subject.

      We are so spoiled these days for things to watch! It is nerd heaven. Growing up in the 80s, 99% of shows were just stupid because it was thought no one would understand a complex plot, or science references (other than McGyver splitting the atom with elastic bands and paper clips). Now I can watch nerdy shows all day and still not keep up with them all. Queen's Gambit was AWESOME!

    • @MrAidanFrancis
      @MrAidanFrancis 3 года назад +6

      To be fair it doesn't really focus on the chess strategies (or so I hear), and it's more like a sports documentary. It may still be that popular media glorifying "nerdy" things like chess is a new phenomenon, but it still seems more like a show designed to be *about* a nerd than *for* nerds. The two aren't mutually exclusive, but the existence of popular shows about nerds is a lower bar than the existence of popular shows for nerds.

    • @alaricgoldkuhl155
      @alaricgoldkuhl155 3 года назад +1

      @@MrAidanFrancis There was plenty in the movie for chess fans - references to famous positions, openings etc. There was nothing objectionable that I can remember, apart from perhaps an over-emphasis on the Sicilian defence (not my favorite). For anyone who has caught the chess bug, it was the recollection of that first person who turned me on to it, and the hours staring at a board together. Best chess fix since Knight Moves with Christopher Lambert back in the day.

    • @Superiorform4
      @Superiorform4 3 года назад +1

      @@alaricgoldkuhl155 I noticed 3 chess mistakes - the first being pretty grave! Mr Shaibel refers to the position after 1. d4 d5 (the closed game) (or maybe 1. QP-4 QP-4) as the Queen's Gambit. Someone asks Beth, I think at her second tournament, if she was up for a game of skittles, or speed chess, or blitz, or bughouse, skittles/speedchess/blitz being nearly synonymous, and I forgot the third thing I noticed. I also thought Beth playing 3 strong players in a blitz simul was a bit far fetched.
      I don't know if I agree there was too much focus on the Sicilian. It's the most popular response to KP-4 at the top level, and Beth chose it as her weapon against it. I certainly agree that there was a lot in the series for chess fans, lots of familiar words and ideas, and there's always a little thrill in predicting correctly what is about to be said or shown about a grandmaster, or a biography, or whatever. Easily the best series I've watched in a very long time.

      Right, but a lot of it is about her substance abuse and shitty life circumstances, not typical nerdy stuff. Also the marketing was mainly based on Anya Taylor-Joy being gorgeous. The chess stuff was kind of just a setting for the story about her personal struggles. (Granted if they made a show about actual detailed chess strategies it would probably be really boring for anyone who didn't play high level chess.)

    I wonder, does every culture in the world have a default negative portrayal of "nerds"? or is this just a fluctuation in US culture?

    • @StuckNoLuck

      dieseltroy I suppose it is universal. Coming from non-american

      dieseltroy I actually think US English is the only language that has a word for "nerd", although it's gradually been incorporated by other languages because of the domination of US culture worldwide.
      The closest thing in British English used to be "boffin" but it was more specific to being intelligent and not especially negative.
      From what I have heard american schoolkids get seperated into very distinct social groups, everything seems to be more black and white. You are either one or the other. I'm not sure why that is.

      alienzen not true. In my accent in Arabic, we have an old word for nerd before American movies got mainstream
